As a Fence Company Owner, this was a great explanation of augers. You hit every mark. Well done

What is the size bit auger you use?

Hey Joe, when you are pulling the augar out of the hole kept it running and the dirt will spin off, put it back in right away and do the same thing, let her spin, hope it helps.

Thanks for the opinion. Getting ready to drill 2 36" holes for a swing set. I am setting 2 10' 4x4 posts for a swing set near a tree . Will be using a hydraulic post hole digger and a sawzall . I figure I'll do as much as I can without have to do hand work. At 71 YO it's hard to do what I used to.

to rent a tow behind teeter totter digger is cheap and will do big holes.!...the last choice for me would be 400bux a day for this setup!!!.the teeter totter one is hydraulic with a gas motor to run it

Super helpful, thanks. I rented the mini excavator from HD and found it was way better when there were "larger than potato" rocks in the work area (which is always, here.)

The problem with renting an auger, is most of the time, at least the ones I rented, is that they have a dull blade, and can’t drill more than a couple of inches. And the ones I went to, don’t have a new blade that they can put on for you. I finally went to a brand new rental place, they had a brand new auger with a brand new blade. It drilled the holes like butter. I went back a month later to rent the same auger, and it had a dull blade, and couldn’t drill more than a couple of inches, and they didn’t have a replacement blade to put on the auger. So unless you get an auger with a sharp blade, it’s a waste of time and money renting an auger.

New to your channel and looking to go off grid what is the homestead? What state is your project. I do like your attention to detail on your videos. Looking forward to seeing more, thanks for the info and help with options.

I just bought a second hand 2 man. It was a good deal, cheaper than a weekend rental, I went that route so I didn’t have to drill all my holes at once. I think some will be rocky so will take a while going back and forth from auger to hand. I haven’t even tried it yet.

Just to expand on the "Talks too much, says nothing helpful" comment from below. The one-man and two-man augers work great. The operator does not _push down_ on the tool, it is the rotation of the bit that does the work. You never say how wide you need/want your holes to be, and seem to be unaware that one-man augers have available bits in a variety of widths. Would love to have seen some video of the machine you rented encountering the problems you describe, to know if it was the machine's fault, or maybe a learning curve that is steep. I mean, I learned in 5 minutes how to get the auger to remove the dirt from the hole, not dumping it back in, and you didn't seem to learn that at all. I would have been pissed at how that big machine had accomplished so little! My advice to you, and anyone with a project this large, would be to rent the one-man auger for the day, and see how it does. And to have a second person with you to help, share the load, work through issues and provide moral support. As an example of what a helper can do, mine noticed I was not starting with the auger straight up; I was coming in at a bit of an angle. Very helpful to have that second set of eyes!

Just came across your channel on RU-vid, and was really impressed with the detailed plans for your chicken coop. Are you able to share those plans online?

Anyone know how deep you can go with this auger ? Is there a second section you could attach ?? I filled in my backyard, improperly, and now since I want to build on a small part, the town wants me to do a soil test which was over 3K to dig two holes ?? Town said if I could hit undistrurbed soil, I could put peirs on that.....we have a layer of sandstone. Maybe I should just go out there after it stops raining and start digging ?

I will need to dig 13 1 ft holes with this home depot rental (1 man) unit in my front yard. There is no tree roots but there might be some rocks. Any suggestion?
