Realignment has thrown geography and rivalries out the window. So, we attempt to reorganize the G5 conferences so they make more sense geographically and restore some rivalries.

How would you reorganize the G5 conferences? Here are my reorganized versions of the three overlapping G5 conferences (actual conferences in parentheses): AAC App St (SBC) Army (will join AAC) Charlotte (AAC) Coastal (SBC) Delaware (will join CUSA) ECU (AAC) JMU (SBC) Liberty (CUSA) ODU (SBC) Marshall (SBC) Navy (AAC) Temple (AAC) Sun Belt Arkansas St. (SBC) FAU (AAC) FIU (CUSA) GA ST (SBC) GA So (SBC) JSU (CUSA) Kennesaw St (will join CUSA) Memphis (AAC) MTSU (CUSA) So Alabama (SBC) Troy (SBC) UAB (AAC) USF (AAC) WKU (CUSA) CUSA LA Tech (CUSA) Missouri St. (will join CUSA) Rice (AAC) SHSU (CUSA) So. Miss (SBC) Tulane (AAC) Tulsa (AAC) TXST (SBC) UL (SBC) ULM (SBC) UNT (AAC) UTSA (AAC)

As an ECU alum I like this. Keep our core rivals of Marshall, App State, Old Dominion, Charlotte, Navy and establishing ones with Coastal, James Madison and Liberty. Great job!

Glad to know it makes sense for at least one fan base.

I like the idea of playing Marshall on a regular basis again, ECU alum here as well. I want to say that one of the reasons ECU has not moved to the Sun Belt is the smaller conference payout in the Sun Belt compared to the American. I would rather see a new name created for the conference instead of using the American name. The other though is if the ACC fall apart, I could see the ACC reaching to ECU, Marshall, App State, Old Dominion, James Madison, and Coastal to fill the void (if the western schools leave along with SMU.).
@EyeOfTheWatcher
@EyeOfTheWatcher Месяц назад
@@saturdayswarriorbyu It makes sense as travel is costly for East Carolina with the American being spread out as it is. ECU does not really have anyone within a 2 to 3 hour driving distance from Greenville, with Charolotte being a little over 3 hours and half. Also, the AD at ECU has said that ECU will drive to schedule more out of conference games with closer opponents like Old Dominion along with some in state FCS schools (NCCU, North Carolina A&T, Campell, and Elon).

If the ACC starts pulling in other schools, then anther wave of realignment will hit and change everything. But at least then I can do this all over again.

@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
It makes sense. I wish (even though it won't happen) that all conferences would go back to being more regional. It will especially help the G5 conferences financially but also with fan engagement being able to travel to games.

As a Liberty alum, I'd be in favor of this. JMU would be a conference game for us and we'd also get to play App and Coastal.

Great vid! As you mentioned though some of these schools weren't FBS when CUSA was desperately reaching for a life line. It would've been interesting to see what it looked like with only the schools that were FBS at the time. As a TXST fan the thought of being in a conference with SHSU is gross and most other TX G5s would feel the same lol
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
Haha, that makes sense. And it's not a bad thing to have some overlap between conferences. So, there's probably some more adjusting we could do to get optional conferences between the three.

I do like your proposed new SunBelt conference. I am a WKU aluminum. I don't want them in MAC. They belong in South. It would be great to be playing Memphis, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee, Arkansas State, South Alabama and Georgia State. The will better in football and basketball. Wow an awesome baseball conference. With regional conferences hopefully would put more fans in seats and money for schools. I hope this can happen in the couple of years.

I'm glad you like it. I don't have a much knowledge of many of these teams and their histories, so I wasn't sure if I was completely ruining some longstanding rivalries.

Funny note about adding UConn to the MAC: I believe that is the most realistic option for UConn if they plan on keeping their football program. I know they're holding out hope for a Big XII invite, but I think that is just a fantasy at this point. They're hanging on for their basketball programs, which are top notch, but basketball alone doesn't drive the economic bus. Football does, so until they can improve their football program, I don't see why UConn should be invited to the Big XII. The MAC is better suited for UConn football.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
Everyone else other than ND is joining a conference for a reason. The MAC seems like to most obvious solution.
@busaf95
@busaf95 Месяц назад
I actually disagree. UConn can wait until the ACC situation settles out and if there are some departures they can be a very nice backfill.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
Yeah, their best bet is to hang tight to see what happens with the next wave. I wouldn't say their shot at the Big 12 is completely dead either. But if they're still on the outside looking in, then I would think this would be a viable option.
@stevenvitte
@stevenvitte Месяц назад
@@busaf95 I do understand why UConn would want to give the ACC a chance, but on the same hand, the ACC is in a very dysfunctional state now. Even after rebuilding and adding schools like UConn, will the ACC thrive? Not under current leadership and governance. I also stand by this point: UConn football must improve to get a look by any Power Conference. They can't ask for an invite by banking everything on their basketball programs and do very little to help their football program. That's not a smart strategy imo.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
But they would get to be in the P4 and the ACC would be desperate to add good brands.

An interesting thought experiment. I am a contrarian, so I usually poke holes in such things, but I will be nice. I don't think that it will happen, but within your parameters, it makes a great deal of sense, I don't think that breaking up USM-USA is a big deal under the circumstances. All in all my evaluation is it makes sense, but I don't see it happening.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
I admit it's not happening. There's no real incentive for most of the conferences. I'm happy for people to poke holes in this and help me modify it to make it even more ideal to preserve key match ups.

The MWC and AAC should take their best teams and combine. I think this is a semi realistic scenario but not likely. Each conference would want to be one that got each others teams, though. That's why I kind of thought the pac 2 teams left forming a G5 super conference may work. But it doesn't look like that Scenario is gonna play out, although we have another year for it to pissibly happen. I don't think the purpose of forming a superconference is just to add a bunch of teams, It's to add the elite teams from each conference. The AAC of 3 years ago may have had the clout to try and poach but not so much now. Because you've got everybody out there trying to survive, I doubt anybody can get everybody to work together to form a superconference, and the team's not invited would strongly oppose it. I think the top team's left would benefit from getting together in being in the same conference, rather than the current setup. However, I will change my opinion. If the playoff committee, does what it did last year and picks the team with the best record and not the best G5 team. There is the theory that the P4 won't pick the best team on purpose, so the group of 5 gets embarrassed like it did thia year, and won't get included in the next round of playoff expansion. So if the committee is simply going to pick the team with the best record, it doesn't make sense to form a superconference for anybody, Because that team will have more losses than a team for a weaker G5 conference. I will be interested to see how the committee handles next year.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
There a lot to unpack here. I agree with everything from the first part of your comment. The Pac-2 has tried to do what you're saying and failed. But I hadn't ever considered your comment about the G5 team with the best record. You're right, there isn't an incentive to challenge yourself. Liberty accidental got lucky landing in CUSA. This is the same logic why the SEC and Big 10 want more AQ bids, because they want more big teams, likely meaning more losses.
@GR-bn3xj
@GR-bn3xj Месяц назад
@@saturdayswarriorbyu It is a semi conspiracy theory, but I think there is some possible truth to it. Smu was the top of the G5 in analytics for almost the entire second half. Clearly, the winner of the Tulane\SMU should have been picked if they used those. S m u looked horrible against TCU, and decent against oklahoma. Last year was the first year it seemed they punished G5 teams for challenging a P4 team. Why should memphis play florida state at florida state, like.they are next year, If the loss is gonna just put them behind liberty, for example? Hardly any pundit that I know of had liberty as the best G5 Till the end of the year. I think the big conferences can't stand the AQ for the G5, and if they can be embarrassed the next 2 years, the spot is in jeopardy for the future. If the G5 does well, it can solidfy its case for belonging there. It gives the big guys zero incentive to pick the best actual team. I would hope they don't do this. But i've learned to not trust the committee, and no team outside of Alabama should want their fate determined by the committee. Hopefully it will be a non issue and the best team will rise to the top, and we won't have to even worry about this scenario

Sure it is a fun thought exercise but a G5 shake up is not here yet. Its coming for sure but everything is hinging on what happens with the ACC. I can see a future where all conferences are between 22 and 24 football teams per conference. The ACC breakup will likely happen sooner than we think and once it does the B1G, SEC and B12 will pick it apart. Depending on how many teams are left, they may rebuild the conference by taking teams like Oregon State, Washington State, San Diego, Tulane, etc. The current ACC has a flare of being academic elitists and how much of that remains after the breakup will determine if teams like Boise State and Fresno State get an invite. Main concerns will be to bolster their numbers to match their "peers" at 22 - 24, get the best brands they can to maintain a P4 status, and fill in the gaps geographically coast to coast. After all that is when the "fun" begins of the G5 picking up the pieces. It is anyone's guess on how all that shakes out but they would probably follow along and realize there is strength in numbers and start cannibalizing each other until they are also at 22 - 24 football teams per conference. Therefore they would be the G4 or maybe even the G3.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
Interesting. Not sure I see the value of the G5 conferences being so big. But you're right, there will be a major shake up if the ACC has to start rebuilding.

@@saturdayswarriorbyu A lot of the same reasons the P4 have increased in size; stability, consolidation of administrative costs, marketability for TV deals, access to new markets and recruiting grounds. The G5 do need to stay regional though; too expensive going coast to coast.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
That's exactly my point. I don't think the benefits outweigh the travel costs for smaller conferences.

@@saturdayswarriorbyu The only G5 that will have a hard time balancing regionality and getting to 22 teams is the MWC. If we add a bunch of Texas teams most of the games in each side of the conference could remain regional. The teams east of the Mississippi will not have a problem remaining regional. So many different outcomes at this point that its hard to tell. What I am sure of is that USU will likely get screwed in all of it, you know just like you all at BYU and Utah have been doing for decades.
@saturdayswarriorbyu
@saturdayswarriorbyu Месяц назад
I don't think USU will get screwed out of anything. I think they will remain in some version of the MWC where it's a good fit. The G5 as a whole is getting screwed by only getting 1 auto bid to the playoff.

There are some FCS schools waiting for the call as well. Tarleton State had close to 19,000 last year, and they are very new to D1. That is very impressive and is turning heads. UCA or Central Arkansas, Tennessee State, North Dakota State, North Carolina A&T, Chattanooga, Austin Peay State and some others talked about FBS. AAC schools would not do it because They are in a conference that is making more money than other conferences.

It’s definitely an interesting thought, but would never happen. It’s not at all about what makes sense, it’s about what makes money. Conference realignment is voted on by University Presidents, they vote for the universities they prefer to be aligned with academically and athletically.
