Learn how to repack wheel bearings on a pop-up camper with this easy DIY tutorial. Keep your camper running smoothly with proper maintenance and greasing techniques!
One of the most overlooked things with pop up campers is routine maintenance and the wheel bearings hit the top of that list. Many people buy campers and never ask about repacking the bearings nor do they check for themselves. People hit the road and the results can be devastating!
This video will show step by step how to properly check and repack your wheel bearings.
My camera died toward the end of the main video so the last section is the opposite side to show how I put everything back together.

**NOTE** I am NOT a professional mechanic and this video is simply a guide of how I serviced my personal camper. I provide no warranties here and recommend seeking a professional should you have doubts about any step in this process.

Great video. That’s how I pack bearings, too. When I see it come through the other side, I feel like it’s good. Great job explaining all the important points on not hitting the races too hard, and going in a circle. 🤙🏽

I tighten the axle nut until the hub barely turns to seat the bearings. then back the nut loose and then finger tight.

Good video. I would add check your make and model specs and use a torque wrench.

Great tutorial, thanks. Do you use anything to clean the bearings, or just wipe them clean with paper towels? Same for the other parts, just wipe clean or do you use a cleaner?

I just wipe everything clean with paper towels.

Great video! I will be doing my trailer bearings soon! The hub assembly was re-installed backwards. Does the bent axle tube cause any problems? Thank you!

Never had any issues. Could be where the video cut off and had to be spliced in from the other side.

DUDE! you put the hub backwards. Maybe the reason you got a wobble. Got the idea how to do it now, thanks.

I see what you're looking at. I wasn't on backwards though. I took care of that issue with tightening. That wasn't seen because I had to change sides from the camera dying. I've done over 5,000 miles since doing this. I'll be doing it again soon and I'll try to do a better video.

After loosening the lug nuts you take the wheel off and then what happened to the studs? They are missing but you don’t show removing them. It might sound like a stupid question but I will be doing this for the first time ever and I don’t want to mess up my wheels.

Thanks for the tutorial and video. I probably was recommended this since I was looking up utility trailer bearing videos as I am thinking about building a project tiny camper. If you dont mind my asking - what model popup is that? Growing up in the early 90s I have fond memories of my family going camping in a Starcraft popup from the 70s with that tan and brown color scheme that we used to tow all over the place with this green blue plymouth volare wagon. Then around 98 we upgraded to a new coleman popup and a buick roadmaster - both of which took care of were used by the family and my parents for camping trips till 2014. Edit- sorry plugged in my earphones and rewatched again; and was able to hear you say it was an 86 Jayco.

Camera is too far away at the end. Cant see or hear parts. Did you grease the outside of the grease seal and polish the spindle before mounting the hub?

How did you clean them? You mentioned half a dozen times to clean them but the entire step was skipped over right to repacking with new.

Just wipe all the excess grease off the bearings with paper towels. Get all the junk off.

Is there a backwards/forwards on that housing. Looks like you took it off but installed it backwards.
@TheRoamingDad
@TheRoamingDad 3 года назад
I’ll have to look at what you’re seeing. The bearings are tapered and only go in one way. I just finished over 4,000 miles in the last 17 days with it. I’ll probably be doing them again soon.
@toddbrown8181
@toddbrown8181 3 года назад
@@TheRoamingDad at about 4 minutes you can see where the wheel bolts to the hub. It is flat so that the whole wheel comes in contact with the hub. At about 10 minutes you are putting it back together and the hub seeks to be flipped front to back. When the wheel bolts to the hub it will only contact on the raised ridges where the bolts go through. It seems you installed the cleaned seal where the dust cap was. Check the orientation at 4 and 10 minutes. I ask because I just repacked my bearings an helped a friend do his. Mine were installed with the ridges out and his were ridges in.
@Oldtech51
@Oldtech51 2 года назад
I isolated the picture of the hub and enlarged the photo and the hub is infact on bacwards. That's why the wheel has so much runout.

7:30 min mark, what if there were gouges or marks on the metal, then what would you do?
@garstrum4401

Not an expert but I think at that point may need to consider replacing the bearings, rather than just cleaning and repacking?

So I replaced mine but when I put the grease in I pushed it in by finger until it went all through is that fine?
@TheRoamingDad

I would say so. The main thing is to make sure you get it thoroughly greased all the way through.

This type of info is in the owners manual/and or on-line. I have seen different recommendations, depends on usage and conditions of the type of roads/trails encountered!
