Repair a failing interior plaster ceiling.
Folks, we are located in Oakland, Ca.
Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

FYI, folks, don’t wait until it falls, as it might severely damage someone.
In this video, my sons and I removed this failing plaster ceiling.
Then we reinforced it with rib lath, then repaired it with joint compounds.
We were called in to remove part of this failing plaster or buckling plaster ceiling as gravity had its way with it. We got more than we bargained for on this repair.
We didn’t plan on removing the entire ceiling. However, when it got next to the light, we had no choice but to remove that fixture, and blam, the whole ceiling fell as it was supported by just the light fixture. So, yes, it fell on us.
Someone down the line did an incredibly foolish fix or repair.
They applied a bonding agent and another coat of plaster to stop the falling plaster.
It had the opposite effect because gravity helped pull the original plastered ceiling down.
This made 2 inches of plaster dangerous.
When I first stopped by, the young babies in the living room were in danger, and their parents also were. However, the ceiling did fall on both my sons and me.
We thought it was cool or funny, but that’s just us. We’re strong and in shape. But, unfortunately, some folks are not so fortunate.
Folks, if you have a ceiling failing or separating, do your family and yourself a favor, and tear it off. And either sheetrock or plaster it as we stapled our new metal lath into the ceiling joist; no matter if someone in the attic is doing jumping jacks, it won’t fail or collapse.
As it was, the fella who added more weight to a separating plaster ceiling could have committed a foolish thing had this fallen on their babies or themselves.
I point this out as correct repairs, and so-called foolish repairs do more damage than good.
With this ceiling, we try and show and explain in less than 20 minutes what it took the three of us eight solid hours to accomplish by removing and applying a new interior plaster ceiling.
Remember, plastering ceilings is just like plastering walls, except your plastering overhead.
• Interior plaster repai... Repairing interior cement plaster on ceilings.
• Remove Repair Interior... Plaster interior ceilings over wood lath.
• How to spread stucco o... Cement stucco any exterior ceiling quickly.

Hello, yes there was a reason for the added horse hair and even human hair, It gave the plaster and stucco more strength. These days they make Fiberglass mesh, as it's easier to buy and add. I'd advise Sheetrook to cover wood keyed lath personally as the cement board is heavy and not recommended for ceilings, they are too heavy. Cheers.

Howdy Gil Velazquez, what’s the old saying out of site out of mind? I used to use structo-lite and diamond almost always then switched to the commercial types a few years ago when I was showing my sons how to plaster. I really should go back to the structo-lite plasters as they are easier to use, thanks for the tip. The next interior fix I’ll use these plasters, it’s be just like old times. Howdy Ryan, it’s the 20 minute drywall compounds or mud they sell at Home Depot, or Lowes and all the major materials plaster and stucco yards such as Westside in Oakland or Close in Hayward. They have 5, 20, 40, 60, 80, and even longer muds. I find 20 minute mud just right for my speed. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering

Good morning Kent, there’s always time for a beer, you buying? On this one Jason just turned the camera off, I walked outside and heard a big bang, my sons said dad, (As soon as we loosened the light, the whole thing ceiling fell on the scaffold). This is the reason I set the entire area with scaffold, too bad the camera wasn’t still rolling. Those boys of mine are very athletic and got the hell out the way. Evening Peter, the mesh was applied to the original ceiling as it was failing and another coat was applied to it. (Too much weight) That and the new flooring above plus other issues weakened it, which contributed to its failing. Have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering

Great video. I had a hard time repairing a sheet of drywall on the ceiling. My little one left the water running on the upstairs bathroom and it got through the second the floor down to the ceiling of the first floor. Luckily I stopped it before major damage was done but the drywall sheet did get damaged. When I put the replacement, the new drywall was not even with the original drywall. This video actually allowed me to learn how to apply the plaster with several coats until it looks even. All I have to do now is apply the texture which I need to see how its done on one of the videos here on youtube. Thank you Stucco Plastering... great video and very well explained.

Love seeing Lath and plaster kept instead of the quickest way-Good job,And i think people forget that different countries use different Materials and some methods to other countries,here they use plasterboard and only set the joints and sand,in UK They skim the whole lot.I am looking at getting back to the trade again but in a heritage situation working on only older properties Where lath and plaster and solid walls done with Lime plaster,too many people destroy their old properties with modern materials instead of the original.Great videos guys!

Skilled layering and float out of those layers. A lot of respect on that. Thankfully here in the Southeast I don't run across alot of the traditional plaster jobs, and what few I have, someone screwed them up by spraying asbestos contaminated popcorn texturing on then leaving the home owner with two options, overlay with sheet rock if possible or call an abatement company in to rip it apart and then for me to come in to redo. Since most of my companies work deals with removel of popcorn and "acoustic" ceiling textures and refinish work......and everyone up until recently had at one point had their ceilings remodeled with the mess or their homes were done originally by the build contractor for cost savings and time....anyway, newer homes that came with it and have minimal paint spraying if any the textures come right off with either a little moisture or scraping and then a little moisture, but if it was done over a painted or primed surface and then painted later for a cleaner look it's hard as a rock and will not let go of the surface usually so we check securement and then have to skim out the ceilings with 45 to 90 minute mix with as little lines as possible, and then go back with a smooth coat of ready mixed bucket mud with a pinch of water mixed in. Then follow up with using a porter cable giraffe sander, check with lights for blemished spots, and then start finish work with the primers and paint. After doing that a few times doing a fresh sheet rock install and finish job seems easy and leaves you with appreciation for the guys who do plaster work

Hello Rob Pearson, thank you, you seam a expert in sheetrock? Both require lot of real work and an even greater amount of time in. Hi Kirk,,back in the 70s, I used to use X-ray plaster in hospitals,,also I’ve used a special plaster to be used in squash courts,(special due to the ball hitting the wall whilst hot) May I ask if you have used any of these products in the USA ? No doubt many plasterers would find it interesting? , I’d like to add, That in 1960 when I started only the following materials were available to us for everyday plastering, Plasterboard,,you had a choice of 2,,1/2 inch or 3/8 ! Sand,,Portland cement,,,with a bit of washing up liquid,!!,,lol And for skimcoat,,we had a choice of 2,, Statite,,which you mixed, like piss,, that one you sometimes had to finish trowel the next morning,!! Or. thistle, which had only 2 stages, soft, and rock hard,!! with nothing in between,!! You would end up scraping it back with the back of your trowel,!😣😣 And thick hessian scrim for drywall joints,,,y that was crap, would show through for a pastime😤😤 No galvanise angle beads for us,,we used wooden strips,! 😤😤, Really glad to see you fellas have it a bit easier nowadays although it’s still hard work, Warmest regards from Dave from the 🇬🇧,,The 71 year old spread,👍👍

Good evening Dave the Spring Chicken Plasterer. yea, I guess we do have it easy, as at least we can control the set of any interior or exterior plaster weather portland based or lime, which is huge Not so much lime here as no one want's to wait the cure time, plus, there are more additives than real lime. Of course, all the veneer systems here have a bit of lime for strength and spreadability with gypsum. Obviously, the Thistle back then didn't have any accelerators or retardants so when it set and turned back into limestone the side of a trowel would have to be solid leats you lose the rivets trying to shave this now hardened limestone, here we can't sand or pull back on edge when it's gone. We just have to apply another coat over the set finish, such is life Live long, and plaster Plastering tips and techniques

@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 6 лет назад
Good evening Kevin, you my friend, have the hardest job in the plastering industry, I tried this but could not do it, "work alone," as it takes too much time. In answer to your question, absolutely, you can use taping mud. I'd advise getting some help with mixing the dry powdered plastering compounds, as once you do this, you will never again think of applying premade tapping muds. With your spreading ability/talent to apply taping muds, you would triple the ease and time necessary to complete any project. Just keep in mid, 20 minte drywall compopounds means if you use a clean bucket with a clean drill paddel, your plaster mud will set is 20 minuts, The same applies to 40,60,90 or even the houre and a half drywall compound. Try it, then let me know what you think, as you already pocess the hard part, the skill of applying, now combine the drag of addiung water to a dry mix, and presto, you will svave so much time in sveeral years to take a five month vacation, with the saved time. Best wishes, Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts

Evening Kevin, no worries, as you are way past the next level of plastering. It's unfortunate that most of the brilliant drywall tapers have not realized their talents with mud could be enhanced with half the efforts with a superior product such as the drywall compounds, if so most would earn more dough, for less than half the time, and the best part of all, "no sanding." Sanding alone with covering all the rooms and clean up, takes more time than mixing these compounds. Best wishes, Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts

Hi Lynda, I usually tape any areas where I don't want the dust to go. In this case I didn't want the dust in any other room except this one we were working on. Plus I had all 6 windows open for ventilation. The dust although you can't see it spreads everywhere and really should not be allowed to spread throughout the house nor inhaled,you never know what's in it. Want to see what your inhaling 24/7? At night walk across the floor, then shine a flashlight beam across the room now look what's in that beam of light, that is what you're inhaling 24/7 Best wishes, kirk and family

After skimming the boards with plaster we noticed a few months later we noticed hair line cracks running across the joints :( Any advise? Hi, Kirk and Son, will the cold joints (new material joining existing one) be visible after the work is done. In other words, will you be able to see lines like in the video? If no, then how do you hide it? Also, do you recommend sanding for more smothness if any? BTW your video taught me that only the bad part comes out and good part stays in. That is sweet to know because why would you want to mess with good plaster if not needed (won't make sense)? Thank you for the education. Monterey.

@StuccoPlastering 8 лет назад
Evening Montery12 dude, excellent question, No the joints won't show if feathered in properly. A color coat cementitious finish used for exterior finishes would if applied in this same fashion. To try and remove plaster that is well adhered would be real tough so we dont. Most plaster with this wood lath will last for hundreds of years if folks are not walking above it or the home moving, as this vibration is what causes separating. And yes this product is not a veeneer plaster, so it can be sanded. Best wishes, Kirk giordano Plastering

Hello kirk. I recently plastered over my kitchen ceiling it was textured. I used some ready mixed joint cement, British Gypsum. I put on about three, with the last coat I try for ages to get a smooth finish with no gullys, I did a part and went over it with spray water then another part. It was about 20 sq meters, even after trowweling it for 8 hours I still had to go over it when it was dry to fill in loads of issues. Looks good now. Is this normal to have to go over work after the last coat? I had to sand it down a fair bit also... looked like a snow man...
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 10 лет назад
Hi Thomas Shannon, theres no bigger drag than sanding down drywall compounds, except for tearing our exterior stucco walls, which is physically tough, dangerous and dusty too. Thomas, what you are doing simply takes practice. I can spread one coat of say, Diamond, or 20 minute mud over sheetrock no problems, however when you go over timber lath your first coat should be a flat as possible for a guild. I would have recommended Structo-lite as your first coat as it's easy to apply and is like whipping cream if you mix it well. If you have the need to do this again it will be much easier.
