Repair CAT D9 Bulldozer Yoke | Machining & Welding

This video is a job we did to repair a Blade Lift Yoke off a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer. The yoke is worn out on the bearing surfaces and needs to be repaired. This shows the step by step process of machining down the bearing surfaces and welding new material (we are using ER80S-D2 mig wire) on to the surfaces before finish machining to spec.
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Lathe
- Weldmac WHP-2.5 Power tilt positioner
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering About the only thing you could improve on these videos is to explain why you are choosing certain inserts etc. I'm not in the trade so it might be nice to have a little 'fact card' or a few bullet points as to why. Oh and more Homeless breaks!

Especially my youngest daughterm who is currently learning the concept of units (metric, of course!) finds measuring things in banana units hilarious! I have to say I absolutely love your videos! I've been a machinist for 45yrs now, mainly CNC machines and robotics the last 20yrs and I really appreciate your knowledge and attention to detail. I was finally feeling good about my mics and calipers as a hobby machinist, and it took me a long time to get the Starretts and Mitutoyo's that I wanted. Now I see that I don't have top of the line Banana calipers and will always feel second best, I guess this is why I will never be more than a hobby machinist at best.

Those Banana Callipers are fantastic they made me laugh so much 😂😂😂 Awesome video again guys great content and an interesting part to repair. I personally can’t believe how much welding has changed since I learned to Arc weld many years ago and never even saw a Mig welder until the middle of the 1980s. Homeless is a gorgeous Staffie and he reminds me of my 2 especially having to be first in and out of the car. Keep up the great work and looking forward to the next video.

Love that new turn-table and KUDOS for being able to sit still and accurately place your beads for the period of time it took to weld the part out. Anybody that hasn’t done it couldn’t possibly relate to how much pain you can be in trying to sit still and concentrate for that long.

Kurtis braced himself for the smaller weld with the pallet on the forks and I kept thinking he must be braced (for the lower weld) and we just can’t see it. Gotta be comfortable if at all possible.

I love the detailed information on welding metallurgy you provided in this video for this specific part. The discussion of hardenability, hydrogen cracking, pre/post weld heat treats etc was all really interesting to see it be applied in a real world scenario. I'd love to see more content where you get into the weeds on the metallurgy side.

Adds new meaning to sand bagging the part. Worked with a real old guy years ago and some jobs he sand bagged when using a mill.He had about a half dozen bags laying around all the time. 😂I like those ceramic inserts also, use a lot of the ceramic inserts in my work.

Me when I started watching CEE: "What is that? Why are you doing this? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?" Me after 2 years: "Yes, this could be done on the Mill, but since it's already setup on the lathe, it's more efficient. That's a big piece to Weld, will definitely need to pre-heat it to get the bead to stick. I see the problem, the maintenance wasn't done or was done by numptys"

This is one of the reasons I like this channel is that he explains (most of the time) what the part is and where it goes, so he gives context to what and why he is doing what he does and for me I tend to get more engaged in the video to see his solution rather than “hey I’m welding a crack look at me weld”!

We use a bicycle tire tube to reduce ringing. Just wrap it around. Loved how your strapping doubled as a drive dog. Once again great skills and knowledge. Nice repair. Great video.

Your videos have taught me enough to change the eyes on my (very small) hydraulic rams. All the way from creating the centering nubs on the shafts to how much to chamfer for welding for maximum penetration!

I used to work with a larger version of a positioning table. It comes in real handy when welding Sub Arc when you need positioned welds. Because I worked 4/10's this week I get a four day weekend. Time to make good use of it!

Pretty awesome repair. I am amazed how steady your hands were when welding on the new material. Expected some kind of holder for the welding head, but was surprised you did it by hand. Welds turned out great and pretty damn uniform for doing it by hand. Anyway, Thanks for another great video.

I'm totally amazed that the green packing strap had enough friction to drive the shaft like that. I kept expecting to see it stall as the cutting was going on. I had expected you to have to put a dog on the end to engage with the chuck. Bloody amazing. I think I've made this comment before but I'm very impressed with your welding. When you re-cut the bearing surfaces I didn't see even one tiny hole anywhere. That's almost as good as x-raying the weld to look for voids :).

Kurtis, Rance here. I see how you attached the lathe to the yoke...accomplished two things at one go. Using the plastic shipping straps you kept the ear piercing noise down by keeping the yoke from vibrating and acting as a tuning fork & at same time secured yoke via friction fit. Brilliant ! There is genius in simplicity! Job wrll done!

The new positioned is a great addition to your shop. I am always impressed by your attitude expressed at the start of each job, also how well the shop is kept clutter free and equipment kept in working order. The film shots , sound, and editing are also great. Take care of your camera'man' / producer. Makes for a good channel to recommend.

Interesting to see one of these that's actually worn rather than failed. I fix a lot of these for D6Rs. Typically the front bushing wears faster than the rear, and that allows the rear to be held captive while the front half moves slightly. Over time they snap in half on the front edge of the groove for the horseshoe key. Considering what they cost, the contractors are very happy to be able to get the back end replaced rather than buying a new part.

how much do they cost new? These videos always seem like so much work goes into fixing such huge parts that the repair cost would be huge. I can't imagine what the cost is new if they are willing to pay for it though.

@@pudo3792 I think it is more of an issue of availability. The transmission housing that was spray welded in another video just was not available anywhere and had to be produced. I suspect that is the same for this fork as well.

@@stunmunky2 these yokes are readily available but they are ridiculously priced. For a D6R this part from caterpillar (here in Canada) last I heard was $10,400. For a 9R or 9T I'd expect it to be in the neighborhood of $15k. My shop rebuilds them for around $2000 for comparison sake

@@shakeydavesr I finish the bearing journals out a bit differently, but yes. At least in my experience even if they are in perfect shape it's just not possible to weld everything back together accurately enough for it to actually fit. No matter how careful you are, it always pulls when welding. And there is only a couple thou of clearance in these fits
