We've all done it, stepped on a fly line, dragged it through some rocks, or whacked on something while backcasting. Don't despair and don't throw the line away. The damage can be repaired with a bit of running line welded into the damaged area. Watch this video on how to restore your favourite fly line back to health.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I have been fousing on where I am going to repair a couple of weight 9 lines. But my breaks are in the running line portion so a lot thinner.

This was a section from a Guideline Hover which was made by Airflo.

Nope, it's 3/16" outside diameter heat shrink. The diameter of that piece of fly line was 3/32" so there's no way 3/32" O.D. heat shrink will fit over it. Even 1/8" O.D. would be a squeeze to fit both the belly and the repair piece. 3/16" provides us with the wiggle room to slide the repair piece in accurately. It shrinks down enough to grip both the main line and the repair piece.

The heat shrink is listed as 3/16. I beleive you are using something thinner. Possibly 3/32?

Do you think you could use a similar method to repair old cracked lines? I have a Rio Gold that has seen better days

Except for Airflo, all other fly lines are made out of PVC that require plasticizers to keep them supple. As they age, these plasticizers deteriorate or leech out, resulting in cracking. Welding an old, cracked PVC fly line is a crap shoot as it may work or it may just burn before it melts. Airflo fly lines are made out of polyurethane that is naturally supple and requires no plasticizers. I'm currently striper fishing and some of the Airflo lines I am using are over 10 years old with zero cracks. Unless I do something stupid with them, they could last another ten.

Ok thanks for getting back to me. I have bought some cheap airflo shooting heads and have made myself a set of Skagit mow tips inspired by your videos. Haven't tried them yet but they look great and you have saved me an absolute fortune. Thank you!!👍

Where do you get those transparent tubing and which 2 sizes are the best to use?

It's polyolefin 2:1 heat shrink in 1/8" and 3/16" sizes. I get my tubing from Sayal Electronics in Burlington, ON. Any electrical supply store should carry it.
