We show the complete process of grinding, cleaning, sanding and completing repairs to cracked gelcoat on a boat.
Sooner or later, you'll find gelcoat on your boat which has stress cracks. Fixing them is easier than you think, and of you've ever done any filling and sanding you'll be perfectly capable of doing this yourself, and be able to enjoy showing off your boat again!
You'll need gelcoat which matches the surface you're repairing, thickener/bulker (we use colloidal silica), catalyst, PVA release agent or wax in styrene, acetone, a rotary tool with a grinding bit, mixing cups and sticks, a spreader, and sand and polishing paper.

Thank you. Other videos show a film placed over the gelcoat while it sets . But I think your pva does the same thing to keep moisture out ?

Yes, we use the PVA to seal the gelcoat in so it doesn't stay sticky when cured.

Hello, I am thinking to have a small sauna in the after kabin of my glass fiber sailboat? May this project go well if I investering in a proper isolation? Or it that just an insane idea?

Hi Silvano! I've seen some larger boats with saunas (and even some with jacuzzis!) but without seeing your boat and your design ideas, it's hard to say. Managing the heat and the moisture will be the key thing I think, and I'd recommend you talk to a professional about such a large project. Let us know how it goes!

Is there any special way to color match gelcoat? I have a 2005 maxum 3500 with a darker blue hull with cracks in the gelcoat that im repairing. I just don't know how to color match.

Boatworks Today have a couple of videos on matching gelcoat colour if you're doing patch repairs, it's a very good channel :) thr manufacturer should be able to give you a RAL number if it's facory spec

Spread in both directions, in line with the crack. Otherwise you have bubbles under the surface when the end of the crack is not fully filled.

the bubbles can come from mixing your product, so give your product a few taps and get the air out.

Just use a grinder with a sanding disk take all the cracks. Sand it to fibreglass and use gel coat filler sand it again and buff it at the end much easier

We always try to remove as little material as possible. Gelcoat dust is nasty, dangerous stuff!

Gelcoat dust is not that bad the fibreglass dust is worst but if you can grind it down with a Dremel to the fibre glass then you don't get the cracks happening anymore it's a good tip but everybody does it differently.

that would be the total wrong way to repair, he did what I would do, aside from a few little steps. One, I would have used microballons or qcell rather than silica, as it is a PAIN in the ass to sand by itslef for blending, I would have actually used resin thickened with milled fibers, 1/4'' glass fibers, and some cabosil (silica), then I would have faired it out to a complete finish with gelcoat thickened. The gelcoat tends to shrink, and crack as it is brittle by nature. Just my 2 cents.

@@donspider1 luckily, there is more than 1 way to skin a deer. I do things a bit different I suppose, however, I do tend to charge the highest out of all of my competition, and with that I do things over the top, overbuilt, over repaired and overdelivered. That is ok to do it whatever way makes your customer the happiest for the longest time. Cheers.

Thanks for the video. On GRP cars they seem to favour glass reinforced bondo and on boats they seem to use straight gel coat. Any idea what the pros and cons of the two options is?

Hi Richard. As I understand it, Bondo isn't great with water saturation - particularly salt water. I've not used it myself, but I have seen other videos where people have repaired quite large areas with Bondo. Personally, I always prefer to repair like with like to help with consistent finish and properties. Stay safe and have fun!

Depending on the depth of the crack we would use straight gel coat with a little cabosil or if it's deeper into the laminate, fiberglass first then gel coat

We're using a pretty standard blue PVA release agent from our usual supplier - www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/product/blue-gloss-pva-release-agent - not expensive and a little goes a long way!

Any good fibreglass and resin supplier will most likely also sell gelcoat, or you can find it online. Beware though, it's not very healthy stuff to work with - really I should be wearing a LOT more safety gear!

If you have that much cracking in one area why not just just sand down the entire area and re-gelcost it instead of grinding down just over the cracks and refilling? Wouldnt the process be quicker and save you from future gel coat cracking In the sesame area?

That's a very good point, but I wanted to use this area for the video. We have other areas which have fewer cracks, but this area was right out in the open and the cracks were clearly visible, so really it was a production choice more than a "job in hand" choice, if you see what I mean :)
