Our July Newsletter features How to Repair a Leaded Glass Panel using copper foil techniques. This is Part One, Part Two will be put up for the August newsletter. We've shown a similar project where we've repaired leaded glass in this manner but it didn't have the accompaninging video and it was a different type of project. The client didn't want the window to be repaired using lead came techniques which would have involved taking the panel apart to replace the glass. They wanted the least cost alternative for the repair.

I have three exact windows, need ing repaired, just like this pattern and they were buried under panelling! When they hung pictures they hit the glass. Thanks for making me feel more comfortable to be able to tackle this job! Much more professional than the last video that I watched!

This is a fix that is good but purists don't like it, make sure you clean the lead surfaces well before soldering, make sure and watch part one and two ..good luck!

This video is hated by purists who want to do leading the right way.

You are welcome, this is a very unpopular video with leaded glass artists.

When we made those videos there was very little instruction available

The color is very close to the original and the soldering is close but it's not perfect, you can still tell that a repair was made. When we do this to a copperfoiled piece you can't even tell that there was ever a repair.

I find it good, but I get many negative comments from purists!

How do you determine how hot to turn up your soldering iron? I seems to either have it too hot or not hot enough. Any help would be appreciated. I am enjoying your videos. Great information.

For me, I can't hardly have it hot enough because I'm rather fast with running a solder bead. So usually, the hotter the better. However, when doing delicate work, like when foil is very thin and the bead is a small width, I'll turn down the heat. Also, I'll turn it down when I'm working with 3D soldering or if I'm close to the edge. You'll know if it's too cool if the iron doesn't heat back up quickly after you clean the tip or run a long bead.

Where do you buy the lead to repair the glass structure?
@GommStainedGlass

As you can see in the 2 videos about this process, we are using copper foil to surround the replacement glass and then we solder using normal soldering techniques, so there's no mystery, both solder and foil are purchased at our normal stained glass supplier.

Make sure the camera is focused on what you're doing so the viewers can see.

That video was done in 2012 and used various tools. That's not to say that we don't have focus problems any more, sometimes the cameras auto focus just doesn't get clear. Thanks for commenting. 😮😮😮

This seems like a really easy/cheap repair but once soldered it would actually look quite nice.

It was perfect for the "shabby sheek" look she was looking for.

hey Dave ..thanks for the vid..... doesn't that last step prevent the solder form penetrating the joint? I am totally a nubie and am eager to learn

The copper foil is what the solder sticks to. This video is a repair video intended only as a quick and easy method but it's not the perfect method. We've got other repair videos and you can find them on this page www.gsg-art.com/resources.html at the very bottom of the page.

I agree that the last foil should not have been applied. Basically, he now has tape covered with solder and a few tack points. If he had just soldered then he would have had nice connection all around the replaced panel.

Great calm, steady explanations, but please next time use gloves or something else than just gliding your fingers along the copper tape. You're asking for a nasty paper cut! It makes me cringe!

Thanks for the concern, I've been doing this since 1983 and have NEVER had a problem. I did get sliced once when working with foil on glass that hadn't been ground. Wearing gloves would reduce my speed and cause the process to take a lot longer. Thanks for your concern!

You could of repaired it in lead faster. good try!

We wanted to do a fairly good repair without having to dis-assemble the whole window.
