Here's a surprise that showed up at my door one day. It doesn't sound quite right. Lets see what's going on here and what it needs.

Great video on Philco 70 restoration! I think those 70 and 90 Cathedrals are the best looking radios Philco made. Really nice looking radio. Happy you have it working again just like when it was new. Enjoy!

Philco radios have their own unique sets of problems mostly capacitor related. They do work quite well after restoring one. Excellent job on it.

Those old Philcos are fun to work on. Yours looks and sounds great! I have a Philco 28 “Butterfly” on the bench now. I rebuilt 3 of the 4 Bakelite blocks and changed the electrolytics. New cloth power cord as well. It needs tuning capacitor grommets as well. Time to order some. I enjoy your videos. Thanks!

Nice job redoing the chassis. Makes me cringe when I see these sets hacked up like this one. Great job on putting it back. Sounds and looks great. Love these vintage Philco sets.

We have an old Silvertone that’s in poor shape but the cabinet is intact as is most wiring. Where is a good place to start to learn how to bring it back to life.

Start by replacing the filter caps. You should google tube radio resurrection, I remember seeing a good article on getting started.

Respect! You have a much better work ethic than some of the others I see on RU-vid who just want to do a quick hack job and then sell it off. Yes, the chassis washers will bring that dial back into alignment, and will keep the control shafts from rubbing the bottom of the holes in the cabinet. Also, Philco did try to keep the alignment procedures a secret, but Rider came out with a book called "Aligning Philco Receivers", and you can get it from worldradiohistory.com. (It's a little more fiddly than your basic AA5, and the IF is NOT 455KHz!) I've done a few Philco 70's, and I rather enjoy working on them.

Yes the IF is 260 KC. 455 KC didn't become the standard until later.

Technical question..... Hallicrafters Continentals schematic shows .05 cap between oscillator coil and band switch. Not my radio does not have that cap. Just straight original wire. Should I put that cap in or leave it like as good enough ? Your opinion is appreciated. Thanks

Man, that poor thing really did have a hack job literally done to it. Those hacked up blocks are just...why!? Those globs of solder look like someone had one of those big foot long antique soldering irons and used it with one of those thick rolls of plumbing solder, lol. A question. Does the wood case have recessed holes to hold rubber chassis supports? If so that may help keep the tuner lifted up to the proper height if you could get those. I know I had to put them into my '33 Philco 18H to get it to the proper height. I got them from radiodaze but I think they've quit carrying about anything but dials anymore. Nice job on the repair, Sir.

Yes they are 4 recessed holes for a support washer/ grommet. I think i got those tuner washers from Radio Daze.

I bought a Philco 70 a few years back, which was converted into an Am/Fm radio. Imagine that. I restored the radio and cabinet but could not find a speaker for it. So here it sits waiting for a speaker. Should anyone have one they can sell or donate, please contact me.
