In this painting video, I show you the Tips and Tricks for BEGINNERS When Repairing Torn or Damged Drywall From Removing Mirror!
I am using a High Quality Utility Knife, Stanley InstantChange Knife. I show you How to Score the DryWall around the Perimeter of the Damaged or Torn area. I then use my 1.5 inch flexible Purdy Taping Knife to lift the damaged drywall area away and to create a sound surface. I then apply The Roman Pro999/RX-35 to the area to seal in the Torn brown paper. This is an Important step before applying the Joint Compound or Mud because it seals the surface and prevents the water from the joint compound from getting into and bubbling up those damaged areas. I then apply a few coats of a Setting Type Joint Compound or Hot Mud to those areas, and then Sand smooth! I make a Plaster of Paris Mud Pie. It consists of 50% to 50% USG All Purpose Joint Compound and Plaster of Paris. after mixing together, it sets in less than 10 minutes. After it sets, I am able to go over it again with another coat of Mud. I tinted the All Purpose Joint Compound Green so it better shows up on Camera. I am using A Hyde 6 inch and 4 inchTaping Knife. I am also using a Marshalltown 12 inch Trowel and a Purdy Symphony 10 inch rounded taping knife.

I remember YEARS ago when you first explained the mud pies and your mixing board. I ran out and bought the Dricore sub floor board, and prepared it just how you recommended. I bought the plaster of Paris, the hawk and Marshaltown trowel (I had other spackle knives) joint compound, and practiced making mud pies. I would recommend to anyone to practice what you are teaching them. It helps to become more comfortable with the tools and techniques, and it also will give you an actual time frame to work with the plaster and joint compound before it starts to become unworkable. Can't tell you Russ how much you have helped all of us by sharing your tips.

Another great video. Iv’e seen you use mud pies in the past but never understood why you preferred them to setting type muds until now. Thanks for the explanation.

Hi Russ. I’m learning so much from your channel. Thank you! One question here - why do you change to the 12” concrete trowel for the 2nd application? Is there any reason why you can’t use the 6” trowel for applying and 10” drywall blade for cleaning coat #2 and any subsequent ones?

Hii Susan Thanks for your question! It’s a personal preference. Using a trowel is easier on your wrists vs using a blade. Both can do the same job! It’s also easier for me to load up the trowel by going upside down with the hawk. Russ

Watch out because some of those food dyes are glycerin based and will make it harder for anything it’s mixed into to dry.

@@RussOlinatzPaintShow cool thanks! I have two small spots that are pretty small. I’m more worried about if I have to put the knife to it if I can’t get it scraped off.

@@RussOlinatzPaintShow The coloring of the joint compound. Prior videos never did that.

Yes, it really shows up better than just the white compound. Also, you can clearly see where the mud is still wet. Those areas tend to be in the middle. Russ
