We've got a cylinder barrel in to repair off a BIG Mining Haul truck! This is the hoist cylinder barrel off a Caterpillar 789 Mining haul truck and the inside has been damaged. In this part 1 video we show the step by step process of disassembling the damaged cylinder barrel and start machining up the new barrel. First is machining off the barrel end and head flange. We then start machining up the new cylinder barrel by turning down one end to fit the head flange. The head flange is then installed with an interference fit before dual shield welding the head flange onto the new barrel. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we finish machining, honing and welding the new barrel!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Hello, Kurtis, Karen and Homeless, my wife watches the videos too and she said you had a new lathe. I looked and told her nope same one you had. As we watched I commented on how the ends had to be removed she said it was easy with good equipment. I told her no, craftsmanship was the key. Lol. Tell that to the Warren Buffet’s and Charlie Munger’s. Actually some others are good. Cathy Wood predicted a rise in oil prices due to the Ukraine situation. @CuttingEdgeEngineering
@CuttingEdgeEngineering 8 месяцев назад
The head flange and barrel is machined out of 1 piece and then the eye is welded on
@aserta
@aserta 8 месяцев назад
They have to be. If they were cast in one piece, a machine such as that (the dump truck) wouldn't cost ~3mill, but 5 or more. Gotta save costs where you can with these because otherwise, nobody would buy them. There's also benefits in the strength of the finite item, giving each component the best metal to exist with. Kinda like car rear axles. They're also made from cast components and either extruded (commonly known as non-seam tubing) or welded tubes. There's also the considerations of the manufacturer's cost for casting a component as large, in the required quantities to sustain the industry. They'd have to cast 20 of these every few weeks (if not more) to have enough to pass around the globe... they'd be throwing money out of the house. There's many, many reasons behind it. :)

As soon as you said it was an un-honed barrel I got excited, I love watching the honing process. Will have to wait till next week though.

I really enjoyed the clock during the welding! It was great to see the time pass during the parts that were fast forwarded

Cheers Karen and Kurtis. Hope homey has had a great birthday week. A dog at our house this week just lost her squeaky chicken in the bush, so methinks a visit to get a few more and I'm going to send one homey's way for a belated birthday present. Yous are a great team. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

I have no training in your field of expertise, none at all. However, the way that you explain where the part fits, how it functions, what possibly caused the damage and the steps and procedures to repair enables me to follow with understanding. This is, ‘so good’.
