Watching again after finding this repair from 5 years ago when I needed ideas on how to fix the same problem. This was the beginning of my subscribing to and watching ALL of Thomas’s videos. Thanks from today and from 5 years ago, again. Thank you sir

Tom I first saw one of your videos about a week ago and I find the information and guidance great. I enjoy building a new item or repairing something just as well, except that repairing has always been difficult for me, but from now on that´s going to change. And yes, I avoid videos with distracting music, just the facts of the trade, Thank you very much.

Thank you for the video, Screws tend to expand and contract in a critical area such as this wood dowels would be more compatible adding strength and support to the leg
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 4 года назад
Thanks! It's always tough to decide whether to use a screw or a dowel. What I like about screws is that you're drilling a much smaller hole, and getting a lot more strength. With a dowel, the areas around the newly drilled dowel hole are weaker, so it really depends on the situation

Hi thank you so much for your videos love them I have a question I just got a wood table the lake split where the screws go into the table so as I was trying to stand the table up by myself which I should’ve had my husband and someone helping me yeah so did the leg split so it only split on the top where there’s like a square piece and then there’s two round pieces it stops right there how can I best days is there any clue what’s the best way to go about this
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 2 года назад
Thanks! If it's a fresh crack, work some wood glue (Tite Bond or Elmer's) into it, and clamp. You might need to invest in a clamp or 2, it's important to get it right, you only have one shot!

One question. Does any of your videos show a repair on a table leg, not a clean break like this one, but of a joinery break where a crossbeam attaches to a CORNER of a square leg? I seem to remember there was one, but can't quite locate it Currently tasked with resurrecting a table that has been butchered beyond recognition, and watching a pro like you at work, making things LOOK easy, ;-) helps getting into the right mood!

I just purchased an old desk where one of the legs the hanger bolt, screw portion has pulled out. The nut is square. I know the desk is at least 70 years old. Will toothpicks work to fill the hole? The legs have bee glued at one time with what looks like yellow glue. Should I reglue?
@johnsonrestoration

Hi Trudy, thanks for watching. Toothpicks will work but i would add some wood glue in there also. By definition those bolts will pull out, so don't over tighten. Good luck! Tom

Question, love how you work, but one question, I noticed that you used and aluminium strap to bend into shape. 90 degree bends create stress cracks which I saw when you bent the strap. How how come you didn't use a mild steel strap?

Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration Mr. Johnson, good video. This is my first, I'll be watching others. I'm not a restorer, but I am a woodworker and I do get asked to fix things sometimes. When I saw you do this, before you used the clamps, I was wondering why you did not use the screws as clamps. Why would that not have been a good idea? I'm just curious, because I might have to do this someday. (by the way, I'm not in a business.)

I noticed that the leg next to it had broken in exactly the same way and been repaired. Is it a fundamentally weak design? I was told when making steel reinforcing for wood not to drill the holes in a straight line so as to discourage any tendency to split along the grain. What are your thoughts on that?
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes, these "sabre" legs are fundamentally weak. I agree. If there's room, I try to stagger the screws

@@johnsonrestoration I remember high security hinges had the holes well separated for that reason. I know you are a cabinet maker, not a joiner but could you tell me why hinges on some doors are not spaced equally. Sometimes there are 2 very close at the top, then a third one near the bottom?

better than screws you could use a couple of hard wood dowels across the brake.
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 8 лет назад
+mtabernig Hi, thanks for watching. I used to think dowels were somehow more appropriate, maybe from an aesthetic point of view, but for this particular job, where strength is paramount, I felt screws were better

@banatibor83
@banatibor83 3 года назад
Why screws, why not a dowel through the brake?
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 3 года назад
Thanks! Because it's a leg that must support a lot of weight, the screw is a lot stronger than a dowel, plus the hole drilled for a screw is a lot smaller. Dowels can weaken the wood surrounding the dowel
@dannynewton9083

Until I saw the broken leg, I thought the leg was steam bent. It is hard to imagine how massive the original slab of wood was before the leg was sawn out.

That's true, but they did frequently glue up pieces to make the larger piece to cut.

Had watched this video on strength of hot glue melts for wood, he test's the strength and measures the lbs. of force it can take. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hu8sJBctzFc.html . I am a female crafty person and have done many fixes on things but I have a dining table leg that broke and would be hard to clamp so trying to figure out my best way to fix it. I live in an coastal area and no one does this kind of work so I have no choice but to try. Wondered what your thought on these glues after watching the video?
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration Год назад
Thanks Caroline! Interesting video. I know nothing about hot glue sticks, I have never used them. I don't believe they are useful for furniture repairs, with wood, water soluble glues work best. The important thing to realize is that no matter what kind of glue you use, the leg still must be clamped into place correctly. I have shown this is in a few of my videos
@SSmith-fm9kg
@SSmith-fm9kg 6 лет назад
Using the aluminum brace was basically a moot point. Your fractured the bar while bending it at 90 degrees. It has almost no strength now.
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 6 лет назад
Thanks! Well, I know what you mean, but I'm not asking that brace to do a whole lot. The leg is strong, but the brace will just keep it in place to help keep it from moving if the glue ever stars to loosen.

I'm sorry to say that this is the only time I feel uncomfortable about one of your repairs. Given that another leg had previously broken and the truly pathetic metal straps already in place I wanted you to make a strong steel spider to fit the inside of the legs, exteding well down the curve to prevent further breaks. I'm not an expert in antique furniture but I am uncomfortable with the idea of returning this piece to active use without add some decent strength to its unfortunate structural design weakness. Sorry to sound critical.
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 5 лет назад
Thanks! No problem - but I did make new metal straps that pretty well covered the short grain - did you watch all the way to the end?
@jonka1
@jonka1 5 лет назад
Yes I watched to the end. Your strap was an improvement but the rest of the legs are possibly at risk due to the flimsy nature of the others. I have a passion for structural integrity and like to incorporate metal where appropriate. You mention "straps" but I can only see the one aluminium one.
