Fixing a leaking hydraulic swivel on my dad's Snorkel 60 ft man lift. The top was pitted so i had to machine a repair sleeve to give the O rings a good surface to ride on. This video shows disassembly, machining, and most of the assembly although my battery died at the end which i apologize for.

Over the years i have been given many of these rotary cylinders to repair with Hard Crome plating. The internal bore is ground out to remove all the damage, it is then hard chrome plated undersize by around 10 to 15 thou. Then lastly reground to finish size, with, if possible, a very shallow taper to aid the seal compression on re-assembly. Always warm up the seals before fitting in hydraulic oil (never water!) and use vaseline to lube them as they slide in. After being hard chromed these rotary seals tend to last forever as they are more resilient to corrosion. I have also re-chromed 1000s of hydraulic rods in the last 50 plus years, and here is a top tip for any plant owner or operator. WHEN THE MACHINE IS NOT BEING USED, PUT THE SHINY STUFF BACK IN THE OIL!!! Why do I say this? Well consider and ponder on the following. A machine is frequently left for days, weeks, months or even years with the chrome rod sitting out in the atmosphere in ever type of weather possible. One day you start it up, the exposed rod is probably bone dry, covered in crap oa maybe event a bit rusty, and the only direction the rod can go is back into the cylinder, and those seals ain't gonna enjoy the ride! But if the machine had been parked up with the rod in the oil, even if it been sitting dormant for ever, you will be lubing up the seals from the get go. Look after the chrome and it will look after you

Pro Tip - Soak all teflon seals and bands in hot water for 10minutes, then install...will make bands much easier to install and they'll shrink back much quicker than working them at ambient temp....also,use vaseline for lubing..also,the can is tapered only on one side,so make sure you install the center section from the correct side so it compresses the seals as it's being assembled

Temperature of hot water?
@mikekopisz1227
@mikekopisz1227 Год назад
@VELIMUKHAMMET SARYYEV just around boiling....basically, let it get up to a boil,then back off the temp then drop em' in.....let them sit for about 10mins ...this is something you have to work fast with....then after you get the Teflon seal on to the piston,quench with some cold water and the seal will shrink back down and make a nice tight seal.....a heat gun works well also,to help keep the seal soft enough to walk it over and get it seated into the piston groove

I thought it was recommended to soak it in warm hydraulic oil @ 200 degrees F. I'm pretty sure I saw a Bobcat tech recommend oil, not water. Yet I have seen many say warm water. I would think oil is better. And as others mentioned, use a spring compressor.

@@timmer9lives water works just as well...I prefer water because its easier to work with as far as getting it up to temp quicker..I was actually taught that from an old timer at my local hydraulic shop many years ago...he had been rebuilding cylinders for 30plus years at that time,so I took his word for it and have always had good luck with the boiling water trick...I've read about using hydro,but never tried it...after using water for so many years without one over-stretched piston seal,I never bothered trying hot hydro..maybe one day I'll try it though

Nice work. Putting the bore in an oven up to temp that wouldn't damage the seals would have been an interesting idea. Not sure if it would work though.

Everything was so precise until you brought out the calibrated knockometer... Enjoyed the video, Thanks, I just ordered a seal kit for my lift. Very helpful. Hopefully mine will not be pitted.

I'd have warmed up the rotary cylinder in oil so the piston should fit more easily

my seals were leaking on my swivel joint and it cause all of hydraulic functions to lose power even the drives.replaced them and good as new .Did u have the same symptoms?

It was working fine just leaking on the floor. It’s a bad design in that it traps water in the top so it pits

You have to compress the o ring with like a piston ring compressor

this is not a piston.the rod itself enters tight ..vaselin is sufficient

I would consult a hydraulic specialist that knows what needs to be done to repair this expensive part before I'd just jump into doing a repair that might work or just destroying the housing. I'm sure there's a hydraulic shop in the area that will give you the options you have.
