Excellent work on those door repairs. Personally as far as swapping the roof gos - id drill/unpick the spotwelds on the perimeter of the cars and the doner panel , make cuts on the corners and swap over. Your doner roof should slot straight back on to weld up with no need for extra bracing - measuring or compromising pillar strength.

If the new roof is completely solid, brace up the A, B and pillars (like you did to the body to fit the cills) and join the new roof at the pillars. It’s much less welding so much less distortion but you need to make very accurate measurements.

I'm really looking forward to the part where you change the roof, because I'm in the exact same situation. I have a roof with holes, and I just got a new roof in good condition (got it delivered today), but for now it's in a corner in my garage :) I've been told it is not a good idea to cut and weld at the pillars as it's several layers of metal. So I guess cutting right on the inside of the edge all around could be an option?

Started by watching your caddy series (hoping for my own caddy project at some point so that's why I was looking!) And ended up watching this series after I caught up on the caddy. Now caught up on this one and you are basically living my dream of a MK1 and a caddy haha! Top work though and very much enjoying it 👍

NIce one Dan, I have been folllowing you and subscribed since about May last year with the T5 project, and its amazing to see the progression in such a short time! You'r welding pal is bang on now and this project is looking brilliant.. I think its pretty clear its not what your enjoying the most but its soon going to be time when this is going to start looking like its coming together and your going to love it, you have acheived more in the last few months despite the the other projects than most people do in years rebilding classics! have a look on the mk1 owners forum, a few have changed the roof, its folded over the rain gutter, i think i remember some just un folded the new roof from the inside, and the old roof unfolded from the outside.

Dan, as always you are methodical and doing well, I wish that I had done as well, when I started welding, and I had an apprenticeship! with a basic grounding of welding types (mig not included, self taught as you are) I have a SIP 130 I brought in 1992 and have only just spent a while modding it to improve things including a euro torch, anyway, rambling. Loving the progress, doing well, keep it up! Edit, what I meant to say was still learning things from you at the age of 54 so yeh, did I mention well done :)

Another good video, it’s sometimes difficult to realise just how much work you have done. Keep on keeping on and you will get there soon :-)

Getting there Dan that pin hole of light at the end of the tunnel is definitely getting bigger. Is the old roof that bad, could you not do what you did around the petrol filler. Why not paint it same colour as caddy, could be your signature colour?? It can always be repainted to original later.
