Oh, wow. Just wow. Such memories just came flooding back at the sound of that game! I can remember the sounds and smell of the video arcade where I would spend the weekend with my friends playing Black Knight (our favorite pinball game). Our favorite arcade had a Putt-Putt mini-golf nearby, a mall, couple of fast food places, record stores, and 3 movie theaters all right there in the ring road - a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. We would either get dropped off by one of our parents (those were the days!) or one of us would drive if we were old enough to have a license and a borrowed car. I can smell the pizza from the snack bar and the cigarette smoke from the area with the pool tables like it's happening now. But the world has moved on and it's all gone now. The mall is dead, the arcade and movie theaters have long closed down and rebuilt as a Walmart. Even my friends aren't here anymore, I'm the last one of our little group. It's amazing what memories an old pin ball machine can dig up. And to channel a little Janice Joplin: I would trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday. I hate to be getting all nostalgic, but those were the best of times for me. Thanks for sharing this video and for all the work you do in restoring these machines.

@@LyonsArcade We can hope that the games will live on for a very long time, but who knows? They are meaningful to our generation primarily through nostalgia - there is no way to know if the youngsters will preserve the games after we are gone - they don't have the good memories associated with them. To the young generation these games are "lame". I don't even know where there is a pinball machine in my local area anymore - I haven't seen one in my regular daily travels in ages. I think for me, I would consider it the Holy Grail if I could lay my hands on a restorable Black Knight or KISS machine. :) Man, Black Knight was awesome with the two level playing field, the "magna-save" and the 3 ball capture. I probably could have bought one with as much money as I put into playing it! I've got my eyes out, make no mistake... But there is hope yet. Just last night my 14 yo son was at his weekly game night at the local coffee shop and everybody was bored. So I broke out my old "Star Fleet Battles". Yes, that one. A survivor from the 80's - pencil and paper and everything. And you know what? The kids loved it! They literally had never seen anything like it before where you could play a game and be flexible on the rules and have to AGREE with other players on certain things - and they don't need internet, apps, permissions, subscriptions, or anything. They absolutely ate it up.

Such a cool time in pinball history. All I played was Bally until I visited a large arcade in the city. I thought Black Night looked cool, then I played it... Nice work on this old classic Ron! Played it to death in a small diner in a small village back in the early 80's. I think Black Knight has one of the coolest attract modes of any pinball. It was the speech that got me into spending way too much on that pinball. I remember walking past this new pinball in my local arcade and all the sudden, The pinny started talking to me. @@LyonsArcade At least it has a bigger vocabulary than Gorgar, but that's not saying much. Gorgar had a vocabulary of just 7 words, Black Knight had 10. They made slightly less than 14,000 _Black Knight_ games... but it got two sequels! Black Knight 2000 (despite the name, it was released in 1989) and Black Knight: Sword of Rage, which was released just two years ago. I played BK2000 a few times. I really wish I had the chance to do a side-by-side comparison of all three.

I like the way they used orange LED's in the display kit to mimic the look of the original plasma display. I have seen some kits that use red or green and they don't look as good. :) The rectifier giving + and - 12V is working as a centre tapped full wave rectified (not full bridge) supply. Half the bridge (two diodes) gives +12 with refence to the centre tap and the other two diodes giving neg 12 with reference to the centre tap. 24V across the bridge :).

If you ever need to desolder a large number pin chip, get some bismuth based solder. Since it is a very low temperature solder, if you blob the solder over all the pins on each side on the back side of the board, you can heat both sides and the solder will stay molten long enough to pull the chip free. Then use solder wick to remove all the bismuth solder you added, and then use regular solder to attach the new chip.

Absolutely beautiful BK! That's an early one if I'm not mistaken.. It is like mine with the transformer in the back box. Didn't they move the transformer to the bottom of the cabinet in the system 7, so this one is one of the last ones, still using the system 6 power supply? Also, DONT FORGET TO FUSE THOSE GI BULBS.. If the rectifiers in the backbox had shorted, you'd have had a fire.. Well known Williams problem from this vintage..

Nice repair journey, reminds me of when a mates old 8 bit computer (TRS-80 clone) got fried, something was loose in his printer and 240V mains power went back up the printer port and did that much damage it's not funny. First, replace all the blown PCB tracks (Yes, a big 'surge') then replace all IC's that are really hot, then replaced all IC's that were dead cold, that got us 99.9% there.... Amazingly the CPU and ROM's survived.

I can't tell without a closer look, but I think those replacement displays use caps to smooth out the strobing to a specific dc voltage value so the led's stay on which is how they are flicker free. - so if you max it out you "only" get 40 years per your math - I personally think it's still worth running them near or at max if you get 40 years out of it before you need replacements. personally I'd probably run them at ~90% (just shy of full) to try to stretch that just a bit, also most of those in my experience are really bright anyway (particularly compared to the vfd that you're replacing).

I feel the glue in the hole is not used then chop off the unused plug end

Hey Ron, Don't you guys have a CRO ( occilloscope - not sure if I spelled that right ). A cro will allow you to track both digital and analog signals right through a circuit. I have two, a digital and an analog ( the digital can be a bit hard to read with analog signals at times) which I use when troubleshooting TV's, Amplifiers and even ripple on power and signal lines. Yeah, I know it's sometimes a pain to setup and connect but it can save you a lot of time chasing signals and it also allows you that comparison of signals if the signal is being scrambled by a faulty cap or something.

I imagine it might be a good idea to use a stronger regulator if you want to use the original boards to account for the slightly higher load on the 5v line.

"there was a hole blown in the bottom of it". LOL...Reminds me of my university days. I was taking a Hardware Interface class....the hardware kit cost us about $50 back then (A PIA, Logic Chips, clock chips, etc.). The TA running the lab reminded everybody to check their circuits a couple times BEFORE applying power, including the polarity. One student apparently didn't hear and as soon as she flipped the switch you heard POP....yep...blew the top off the chip. NOT a cheap mistake. Today that would be about $5 in chips, but way back then? LOL...Never forget it "That was my chip"...was all she could say.

Getting an Electrolytic Capacitor backwards in a high power circuit can be dramatic! Keep it cased when initially powering it up.
@WreckDiver99
@WreckDiver99 2 года назад
@@gorillaau Not too much anymore, they have those stupid vents designed in. no more fun. :( Back 40 years ago not too many had those vent systems, and you'd hear "POP" once in a while and the student just looking at their 47uf cap going "SH!T"... LOL...good thing those were cheap, not like the chips...

it is possible to blow a transistor and send voltages back to the chips that drive the transistors and maybe even back to the cpu if the transistors short then anything can happen.

JOES CLASSIC, I'm not understanding why the Test ROM doesn't output a "strobe" for the lamps. I'm not understanding how the strobe signal takes the PIA lamp output +18vdc voltage and converts it to +6vdc for the lamps. Since the PIA chip for the lamps is outputting +18vdc for each lamp bulb but the strobe signal is strobes the 18vdc which makes it 6vdc for the lamps. I understand that the strobe signal is a logic pulse width modulation PWM type of signal, what I don't understand is how the strobe signal is strobes the 18vdc and turns it into 6 volts for the lamps.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 года назад
I'm not completely sure why it does it, but the input is 18 and the output on the lamp matrix is only 6 (a third)... and the reason has something to do with the way the lines are strobed. On the test rom it doesn't make the PIA strobe, it just makes it turn on and off, which allows all the lamps to have a full 18 volts and blows them all up! They're only designed for 6 volts. Thank you for watching Wayne like always!
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 2 года назад
@@LyonsArcade It seems that the PIA chip "steps down" the lamp voltage from 18vdc to 6vdc. That unusual to have the PIA input is 18vdc and the PIA output is 6vdc. Ya the test rom is programmed "incomplete" because it needs to strobe the PIA chip to prevent blowing up all the lamps at 18vdc. I think the strobe signal is a pulse width and the duty cycle determines the PIA chip output voltage which is a 1/3 of 18vdc is equals 6vdc based on the pulse width/duty cycle of the strobe signal to the PIA chip. Thanks for making the videos and comments back to me.

11:52 swapped in a "new" chip... from 1974! Shouldn't customers pay extra if you use period correct components? Also a dirt cheap super simple chip like a 7406 would cost half a fortune in '74! (no, I don't have a problem with using replacement parts that are older than the machine they fix - I kinda do that regularly myself - I remembered I had to get a 7402 for an Apple II in around 2014 and I went to the local electronics shop - RIP btw - and got a new one, and it was made in 1972! Still works fine, just gets a little warm.)

too bad we didn't see you diagnosing the mpu board or did that rating start going to R with swearing. that was a lot of dead chips and it reminds me of one day I almost had a game finished just had one lm3900 to replace but wasn't sure at that moment and was diagnosing it and slipped putting high voltage into 5 volt connection, a bang and fire when tants exploded and 8 dead logic chips including ram memory a dead power supply with no schematics anywhere took me two days before I could bring myself to touch it again. I hate fixing mistake driven damage ,its to thorough.

Sometimes if we're knee deep in it and we don't actually know what's wrong, we keep running into other problems, we can't really film it all because we don't really know if it's going to work. So sometimes we're swapping stuff we're not sure if it's broken, if it ends up fixing it then we just review what we did. Thank you for watching as always!
