Can't believe I didn't think of using Bondo. Thanks for the heads up.

Nice Idea, been doing this for 20 years and that never crossed my mind. Seems much easier than remaking spoil boards and redrilling and pocketing mounting holes. Always learning something new. I may change your idea a little, keep the dowels for line-up holes, but use wood filler instead. Not sure if it will adhere as well as the bondo, but its cheap enough to give it a shot... I have used filler to repair 2.5d mistakes and it held up well. Thanks!!!

Thanks Mark. I never thought of using bondo. Great technique overall. Glad I saw this before attempting it on mine. I never did this and my table surface is a bit bowed as well. This should clean and level everything up nicely!

Thank you! To be clear, I only used the Bondo to patch deep holes/gouges. If the Bondo layer is too thin, it can chip out or be torn out, so I only used it in deep cuts. I didn't use it to fill in low spots - I surfaced any low spot or shallow cuts out of the spoilboard with the surfacing bit.

I had thought about doing this as well but my Bondo was well aged and went bad. I use Durham's Rock Hard water putty for repairs to dings on painted trim and had given some thought to using this for spoilboard repairs but I haven't found the round tuit yet. 😁😁Steve

Looks good Mark. I was thinking of doing this to mine, but didn't know if I was being vain for making it pretty. My spoilboard had a rough beginning and deserves a bit of love. Thanks for sharing as always.

Thank you John. It's less about aesthetics than it is making sure I have a flat mounting surface.

Looks great. Do you worry about the MDF swelling when you put the shellac on it?
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC Год назад
Thank you, Rich. I don't worry at all because shellac is alcohol based. It's very well known for the fact that it will not raise wood grain or cause it to swell in any way.

You're not the first a certainly won't be the last to use automotive body filler for an other than it's intended purpose. It's a great product with a 101 uses, I've used it for leveling sub-flooring.👍👍

I've seen people repair holes in boats, fix low spots in concrete floors, smooth over fiberglass doors - you name it. It's cheap and easy to use. The best part is, it'll take just about any primer and paint you can imagine.

Why do you have the board in strips and not a solid board?
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC Год назад
There is t-track mounted to the table between the MDF strips. The t-track allows me to easily position clamps or mount fixtures to the table without drilling holes or driving screws to mount them. Some people prefer to make a solid spoilboard and drill holes in a grid pattern, then use threaded inserts in those holes to allow for clamp or fixture mounting. It's down to personal preference, really. Spoilboards are another case of "there really is no best - it's whatever you prefer." This video will explain how I made built my spoilboard: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uhuPbu2wVGg.html
