Symphony No. 55 in E-flat major "Der Schulmeister" ("The Schoolmaster")
This charming symphony, typically full of invention and delightfully vivacious, has a curious and perhaps apocryphal story surrounding its unconventional nickname.

Love this series. Have always thought Haydn was underrated, you are always bringing fresh insights, often to delightful symphonies like this one, which was new to me. Thank you!

Regretfully I have to leave for work now, but I will watch the rest of this later. These videos on Hayden are just the greatest delight in a troubled world. Can’t wait to start over and hear it all next time around.

I've been loving the Haydn crusade since it began. Dave, I think you once said that the Haydn crusade tends to get less views(but my memory may be faulty) but the Haydn Crusade will be great to anyone 100 years down the road.

Yes, it gets very few views, relatively speaking, and I think it's the best thing I'm doing.

Hello from Barcelona Thank you very much for sharing so much knowledge; a real treasure. I'm spending more time listening to you than to my ever-growing collection, due to the amount of interesting suggestions from you. But your explanations could not be more rewarding. Then I have the time of my life when I relax and listen to the recordings; an indescribable pleasure.

How not to be in admiration for Haydn's genius and David’s passion and sharing 🥲🌸

Thank you for this wonderful series on Haydn; just some observations: the opening 4 beats are in 3/4 time followed by rests. From bar 23 we are effectively in 6/8 time in the string section or a Hemiola, a common musical form to give the effect of a change in time signature. Beethoven goes to a Hemiola in bar 9 of the Eroica with the second violins followed by the first in effectively 6/8 time. Fun fact the Eroica is Opus 55 of Beethoven:)

Ah Haydn! he deserves a victory march, not a crusade.

Wonderful video. Marvelous symphony. I am so enjoying this crusade. Jumping ahead, I’m looking forward to your take on No. 58-which is one of my favorites )and I’ve found zero commentary on). No pressure. You’re great, David!

Absolutely wonderful analysis! The boundless variety that Haydn brings with his music is astonishing! Thank you. I now have the complete cycle on Decca [LPs, bought second hand but mercifully near mint], and will use your continuation of this series on these symphonies to help me with detailed listening to Dorati's way with the music. I have not found a weak link in his cycle so far! But it is a huge set to get to know. It will take years to know them all well! Best wishes from George in Herefordshire.

I hope you got the wonderful Robbins Landon booklets with the lps. Between Dave and HCRL, we've got Haydn covered. (Herefordshire is beautiful country. )

@@bbailey7818 The booklets are marvellous, as the records are. I was born in Hereford in 1961, and lived in the county for the first thirty two years of my life. I moved back seven years ago because it is still my favourite part of the country. Thank you for the reply. Best wishes from George

Yes, it’s the best thing you are doing. And the standard is very high. The Haydn crusade ought to be used in schools if you want to learn about music.

Hello Dave, thanks for this new episode it's great! I have a question: I looked on classics today to see if there were any reviews of Thielemann's Brahms cycle with Staatskapelle Dresden and I realized that there were no reviews. I would like to know what you think about that cycle (if you listened to it)? I think it's a solid cycle and I think the 2nd and 3rd symphonies from that cycle are excellently interpreted.

I would like to do an experiment with people who have never heard a Haydn symphony before. And I would like them to listen to various symphonies, and with one group, just tell them the symphony number and what key it's in, but then in the other group tell them the nickname and see if there is a difference in how they perceive the works.

I’ve seen virtually all of your videos but the Crusades are my favorites, as I invariably learn a great deal about this huge body of work, and their subject matter is pure music not associated with particular performances. For example, I had no idea about the reasons the piece has its nickname and the performance practices associated with it. Never listen to it again and not hear those things! Haydn is so audience friendly, I hope some champions appear soon on podiums. Lastly, I really liked the connection you drew with the Eroica’s rhythms and movements.
