That was not especially complicated but still more involved than it should have been, and it will confuse some people seeing it for the first time. Thank you for figuring this out for us. A strange design from Shimano, but oh well. Still, SRAM beats it with cheap X5 shifters where a partial disassembly of the unit is required to replace the cable.

Hi there, I have a Trek Verve 1 about two years old. In that time I have upgraded most of the components and have broken the rear axle twice. Just got it fixed at my local Chicago bike shop, thought it was a hub adjustment, my wheel was a little wobbly. How does one break a rear axle so often? lol I dont necessarily bunny hop off a set of stairs but I do ride down some from time to time and I do hop off and onto sidewalks. Would that do it?
