Replace BROKEN Tip on Ripper Shank for Caterpillar D11 Dozer | Welding Fabrication

This video is a job we did to replace a broken tip on a ripper shank for a Caterpillar D11 Dozer. This dozer has been ripping up very hard quartz rock and as with any heavy earthmoving equipment it is common for the ripper tip to break. First we cut off the broken end of the ripper shank using our UniMig straight line gas cutter and also bevel cut to weld prep the shank. We then fit and align the new ripper end before lots of welding. After the welding is complete we cut the ripper to shape using our 9” inch angle grinder. A lot of grinding is needed for shaping the ripper end to suite the ripper boot before drilling and counter sinking holes for the locking pins using our huge radial arm drill.
In this video we are using:
- Metalmaster HPM-150T Hydraulic Press
- UniMig CG30 Straight Line gas cutting machine
- Makita 2400W 9” inch Angle Grinder
- WIA Weldmatic 500i Welder
- Hafco ZX3050X16 Radial Arm Drill

The profanity was not a problem. It’s reality. The bloopers are the best part, please don’t remove them. On occasion I have skipped the video to see the bloopers. You do great work and make videos that are interesting to watch. It’s not easy to do both. As a person skilled in my trade I often say, it’s not a matter of how much you know, or how perfect you are, it’s your ability to adapt and recover when things don’t go to plan that make a person truly good at their job. You obviously leave a significant amount out of the videos that won’t be interesting to most, but I know exactly how much work and stress goes into these jobs. And I cannot properly describe how psychopathic my wolf/husky dog is, but I feel like you might understand having seen your shop dog. Keep making great videos, average people enjoy them, even if advertisers don’t.

"Extreme profanity" get stuffed RU-vid. 😂 It's traditional Australian vernacular, swearing is a form of positive affirmation in Australia: "Bloody oath! Daz is a good cunt to work with, doesn't fuck about." 🇦🇺

I've been a trawlerman, a forester and a farmer and swearing is the only way to let stress out without breaking something or hitting something immovable. You're both doing great and unless swearing wrecks RU-vid's algorithm then don't change a thing. The biggest attraction of this channel is how natural you both are, closely followed by an admiration of your respective skillsets and dedication to great work and vid's. Regards from Scotland.

Kurtis is speaking Australianese. It's a derivative of the Queen's English. Slang, profanity, the consistent shortening of words, ending random words with "o" or "ie" , and inexplicable phrases make up the majority of this language. The Prime Minister's are known to speak full Aussie in order to communicate fluently with the citizen's of our great Nation.

What did Kurtis say about the horsepower of this dozer... Let's say 800 to the tracks? Can you picture a team of 800 draft horses all harnessed to a "plow" this size to open up the rocky ground of a quarry site? The amount of sheer power being transmitted through this chunk of steel into the job, nearly boggles the mind! One day, off the tip snaps. Then one very skilled boffin in Oz says: "Bring it here mate. I'll set it right." A day later it's back on the job getting dragged through stoney earth by those 800 ponies...good for another 5 years or more.

You do Superior work. Typically we buy a ripped shank lower end already cut and milled, and weld it on, what you do is amazing. It's fascinating to watch someone take the world's most powerful equipment on this Earth, and repair/rebuild something that is able to continue to be of use for a company. Without these large machines, the company comes to a complete halt. But also the amount of skill that no book can give. This is acquired by years and years of experience, and the ability to use all your senses and immediately know if it's good.

_Hey Kurtis, I was noticing your purple straps near the weld at _*_18:42_**_._* 👀 _Nylon reflows at 516°F / 269°C. So I just want to make sure that your straps are not being compromised by the heat._ 🟪🔥🟪

I kept wondering where i had seen you before. It just hit me! You remind me of Quint from jaws, Sing, "Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain For we’ve received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again” Please!!!

Would there be any chance, in your videos, of explaining how much the customer would save having you repair an item over purchasing a new one - how much is a ripper tyne against a ballpark repair figure. That might encourage more customers.

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Oh Cool. I came to the comments just to ask that same question. Even if you can't say how much the customer paid/saved, it would be cool to at least hear how much a replacement part would have cost.

You act like you've done this before. It's amazing a weld that strong. 5mm per minute @ 155amps. That's a hell of a drill press. the slow mo was outstanding. Good job.
