In this video, the Guru demonstrates how to replace conical grinder burrs in Jura grinder assembly that is used in all Jura home and professional coffee machines.
The conical grinder burrs should be replaced every 2,500 cups of coffee. FILL BEANS error message in Jura coffee machines indicates that grinder burrs should be replaced.
Maintenance Tip:
Avoid using dark roasted and oily coffee beans in Jura automatic espresso machines. The oil residue from dark roasted coffee beans clogs the inner grinding chamber and blocks the coffee outlet to the brew group.

I don't think that people who have seen this wonderful video are quite appreciative enough, since without it, the only alternative would be to cart these hefty machines to Jura for a very expensive repair. Therefore I offer my gratitude for the trouble taken to prepare this video.

Thanks for taking the time to record this. I'd taken my grinder apart to clean the burrs, then found that I was having trouble re-seating the lower burr on the bearings. Watching this gave me enough information to figure out that I was probably on the right track, and was actually applying enough torque when re-attaching the central screw. Seriously, thank you, thank you, thank you. You saved my evening, and probably at least a couple of coffeeless days.

Hello from the south-west of France. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your excellent explanations on how to replace the grinder and also take out clean and put back the brew group assembly for us in our Jura Impresa 9. We have owned this machine for eight years with zero problems at home and would not of been able to repair it without your help. Many many thanks :-) Furthermore I really appreciate you explaining how the items and units actually work it makes take it apart and putting it back together much easier.

I will add my voice of gratitude to you for a great video. It worked beautifully for me and saved me time, money, and some grief...Just a small addendum that may help a few folks: after you tighten the screw to fasten the conical burr (around 20' on the video), look at the base of the burr through the coffee outlet (as shown around 18'55" on the video) - there should be no space whatsoever between the base of the burr and the plastic, i.e. the balls should no longer be visible (they can be visible before you tighten the screw). The first time I did this, there was still some space there after I tighten the screw and I still got the "Fill Beans" error. After re-sitting the conical burr and eliminating that space, everything worked great.

This was very helpful. However, even after seating all the way down I found that my grind was still far to fine, like flour. I adjusted the wheel to a more counter clockwise location than my original markings and that solved the problem. Perhaps the original burrs were a slightly different size or worn down?

+Bill Powell Hi Bill, please change the grind setting one notch at a time towards coarser position. Make individual cup is espresso three times. Make the 4th espresso. Check the fineness of the used coffee puck between your fingers. Please adjust it until you get the desired output which is coarse like table salt grain.

Terrific, helpful video! I have a Jura 560 (Capresso Infinity) and managed to get the coarseness out of adjustment. The part where you show how the adjustment key is indexed to the upper burr is what I needed. Mine had no marks but when I got it properly set I marked it between the burr and rotating key. Thank you again for this valuable video!

Very good video, as always. Well done Parts Guru. Where would we be without you? One thing people might find helpful, though: in the end the only way I could get the tabs on the worm gear to engage when screwing down the assembly was to mark their position with a felt tip pen on the outside of both. Then when I screwed it down and looked through the ground coffee outlet, I could see that there was no gap and the balls couldn't be seen.

I just watched this video and it is so good, thank you! The only part that is missing is how to get to the grinder to begin with. I have the Jura C60 and in my half asleep daze, I just poured a small amount of water into the beans when it asked me to fill the tank. I am afraid to use it now because I am afraid I will damage the machine. How do I open it up to dry it out. Also, I do use dark roast beans even though I know I am not supposed to. Is there a way to get that nice strong brew without using dark roast beans? Thank you!

Hi and thanks for the video. I had difficulty in taking the top burr out. When I turned the outer ring all the way, the burr still did not come off. I snapped the ring off (and lost the tiny ball bearing in the process). I loosened the inner bolt and lower burr, but never took it off. I cannot see the ball bearings below it, mainly because I did not remove the grinder from the machine, but also because it seems something kind of ring sits beneath the burr. When I put the pieces back together, I tried to align the burrs as they were when I opened the machine. I placed the black ring on top where the "absolute zero" aligned with what looked like a mark for zero on the ring with holes. The ring doesn't seem to have a stop any longer when I adjust the grind. And the espresso comes out tasting like coffee. The grind is way too coarse. I was getting the fill beans message for a while (though not much the last few days) but the coffee was good. (I believe the pucks were much larger, though I confirmed the powder and water settings were not changed.) Can you please provide some advice?

Thank you for this and all the other videos. I've been able to refurbish many parts of a hand-me-down Jura S9 OT with your help. I replaced the conical grinder burrs as per the video. My question is about putting everything back together. I put the dial adjuster in to be around halfway (medium-size grind) when the grinder is at the home position, closed the machine and refilled the beans. Now I can't make adjustments towards the finer position, but it will easily turn to the coarser position. I tried while the machine was grinding beans several times but I can't make adjustments to the finer adjustment. Before putting the dial back in, i was able to twist the grinder easily. Only after closing it up I realized it won't change positions as easily. Can you explain how to put this back into the machine, what grind size the home position indicates, and if I made mistakes along the way?

Thank you for the detailed servicing process for grinder unit. While a metal burr grinder lasts around 2500 grinds, what about a ceramic one? Does it last longer or shorter? By how much? Thank you.
@PartsGuruUSA
@PartsGuruUSA 5 лет назад
Conical burrs are the best as they ensure that coffee is grounded to the actual adjusted size, finer or coarser, it’s always uniform and consistent. The ceramic burrs last longer but the ground particles are not always uniform. Are you considering a new espresso machine?

The narrator has the lower (inner) burr inserted into the upper (outer) burr backwards during his explanation (04:00 to 06:00). Also, it is not necessary to remove the motor mechanism from the housing in order to clean and/or swap the burrs out.

I've just removed the grinder from an ENA 9 that I bought off Ebay which had a fill beans error. I followed the disassembly instructions in this video, and was careful to collect all the small pieces that came out. However, while I have the 3 springs and ball bearings as shown... I also have another smaller ball bearing and thinner spring that I'm unsure where they should go back. Any idea where these might have fallen out?
@seandineen1134
@seandineen1134 6 лет назад
Did you figure out where that spring/ball bearing goes? It sits in the plastic cylinder at the top of the grinder and the ball pops in and out of the holes at the rim of the dial. Makes the tick, tick, tick sound as you turn the dial. REALLY hard to get back in, in my opinion. Maybe try masking taping it in the cylinder, putting dial back, and try somehow remove the tape after?

I replaced the grinders in my Jura Impressa F9 (purchased from Parts Guru). I think the coffee is grind too fine because too much water comes out in the tray as oppose to the cup. Where does the top assembly tabs line up with the beginning of the plastic threads on the lower assembly (for the course setting)?

I removed the bottom burr of my grinder to clean it out. Upon trying to reassemble it though, I can't seem to compress the springs enough to place the bottom burr to the correct position. I know it is incorrect because the plastic worm drive bushing is not able to fit within the burr. I tried to assemble it anyways and the grinds I get are incredibly fine, which makes sense as the bottom burrs are now closer to the top burrs. Any advice on how to fix this? Seems odd that the springs are so stiff/long...

How to adjust the grinder to grind more coffee? It grinds very little coffee - too little to form a proper puck of coffee? The coffee machine is based on Jura E-series and I got after many years in the attic. Burrs seem to be in proper shape... Any help? any ideas?
@PartsGuruUSA
@PartsGuruUSA 6 лет назад
Hello, The coffee quantity is determined electronically depending on the coffee strength you select upon brewing. It ranges from mild to strong. Did you try to make coffee at strong setting? If still weak, then you should consider replacing the grinder conical burrs. Over time, the sharp teeth on the grinder burrs wear out and get blunted. And, don’t grind enough coffee so end up producing weak coffee. You should also check the used coffee puck after brewing the coffee. The ideal used coffee puck should be well formed and solid just like the hockey puck.

@roadstar554
@roadstar554 9 лет назад
Parts Guru I have the jura j5. I have used electrical tape to hold it together. The grinder is not working at all however. Could it be the Grinder Burrs or the electrical tape that is stopping it from working? It made a noise the first time now there is no noise at all. Is there a simple way to test the motor while it is out?
@PartsGuruUSA
@PartsGuruUSA 9 лет назад
roadstar554 I don't expect the grinder motor to be an issue as it rarely malfunctions. Can you email us a picture of what the grinder looks like now? It's best to replace the complete grinder assembly if the upper part is broken off the motor. The electrical tape won't hold it long and I don't think you can operate the machine.

+Parts Guru Hi can you adjust the grinding time on jura coffee machines
@Former_Texan
@Former_Texan 8 лет назад
My grinder got wet (no one in the house will explain why there was water on top of the machine). After a full disassembly and cleaning the grinder has been grinding powder fine. It is so fine that it clogs the brew grew filter. I tried replacing the burrs (my product counter was about 4500) and it's still grinding power fine. You say to adjust it, but how? As you adjust towards coarse it's not long before you are at the disassembly position. Have I not tightened the center screw tight enough (leaving the springs insufficiently compressed)?
@PartsGuruUSA
@PartsGuruUSA 8 лет назад
Hi Charlie, when you adjust the grinder to coarse setting, please make three coffee's for the adjustment to take place. It's important to adjust the grinder while its grinding.
@Former_Texan
@Former_Texan 8 лет назад
+Parts Guru I adjusted it at the very beginning when the grinder was clean and run it a half dozen times. I had to run it 3 times before the machine would even see enough ground coffee. The fine coffee is like baby powder and sticks to everything. My new burrs and old burrs both feel similar, I think I have had an assembly problem the whole time, but I can't figure out what it is. The white wire connects to the + terminal on the motor, right? The worm gear appears to be turning the correct way to draw the beans in, but a backwards electrical connection might explain a lot. I wish I had some way to run the grinder on it's own and test it without having to reassemble the machine. I don't have a 120 VDC power supply available.

The balls do not go on top of the springs. If you put the balls on top of the springs then you will never get the tabs on the worm gear to engage in their slots. If you put the balls on top of the springs the conical burr will set so high that the tabs on the worm gear cannot reach down far enough to engage. Drop the balls in the holes first and then drop the springs on top of the balls. It is the springs that fit into the three holes on the bottom of the conical burr not the balls. I spent half an hour fighting with the worm gear trying to get it to seat properly before I figured this out! The Jura factory parts diagram shows the balls underneath the springs not on top as well.
@richardsutton8193
@richardsutton8193 6 лет назад
I've tried both ways and cannot get the the tabs from the worm gear to engage in their slots. I've looked online but the only parts diagrams I can find don't go into the detail necessary to see which way they go. Having said that, the circular indentations in the grinding burr are not large enough to take the springs, but they are large enough for the balls which suggests that the video is correct. How important is it that these tabs engage in the slots, I wonder?
@mguerramd
@mguerramd 5 лет назад
The worm gear is what locks the motor driveshaft to the conical burr. The tabs fit in the slots for a reason, to lock these parts together. If you do not engage the tabs in the slots, the only thing holding the conical burr to the driveshaft is friction. To get enough friction you could easily tighten the screw so much you strip it. This assembly fits together exactly as I described it, the balls go on the bottom. If you watch the video carefully you will see he never gets the tabs firmly engaged down in the slots.@@richardsutton8193
