After replacing the alternator, starter and battery, the Chevy 1500 still wouldn't start. I was told that the ignition switch was going out. Here is a video of the Ignition switch replacement on Chevy Truck / Suburban. This is a 1994 Chevy 1500 Suburban.

I got to say I didn't get a whole lot from the video but the written procedure was spot on and I was able to successfully replace my switch yesterday with success... thanks a bunch!

Tools needed (in order of use): 5/16" wrench to disconnect the ground cable from the car's battery #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the trim piece under the steering column. 3/8" drive ratchet and 13mm socket to remove the four bolts from the steering column cradle You'll then need a 15mm socket to remove two nuts securing the the cradle Locate the dimmer switch (left side on the steering column) and the ignition switch (on top of the steering column) Note: make sure your key switch is in the "lock" position before you remove the two screws holding these two switches together. An 8mm wrench removes the nearest hex head screw A 3/8" wrench removes the farthest nut (then you can move the dimmer switch out of the way) The 8mm wrench then removes the stud (then you can remove the ignition switch - up to remove it from the actuating rod, and over the steering column clockwise). A small flat blade screwdriver is handy to help remove the two wiring modules. Before you do anything else, look at the switch to be sure it, and your new switch, are indexed in the 'lock' position. And before you install the new switch, be sure (again) that the key switch is in the 'lock' position. Installation runs in reverse order with only one additional comment: When you reinstall the dimmer switch, be sure to drop a 3/32 drill bit into the provided hole on the top of the dimmer switch. That is what sets the lash. With the bit dropped into the hole, slide the dimmer switch to move the bit up against the rod, then lock the two pieces down (the dimmer switch and the ignition switch), and remove the drill bit. This job as about 45min from the first screw removed to the last screw replaced.

Fantastic detailed instructions from someone who has done this more than once. The details you give along with this video make the job easier. Its a bit of a scuffle to get the ignition switch and the dimmer switch back in place while having the ignition switch positioned so that it gets full travel of the internal part that the bent rod slips up into, as in pushed or held down toward the front of the truck and the dimmer switch pulled back in the steering wheel direction to get full travel of the rod that goes straight into it from the dimmer switch lever. And not cross threading the real short screw that goes thru both switches and threads into the column. Take your time and start this screw with your fingers, don't force it at an angle and cross thread it. The front one can be an adventure as the stud holds the ignition switch only to start with, and then the dimmer switch bracket goes over the outer stud, and a 3/8" nut holds the dimmer switch tight at the lower or forward most mounting. A drop light and a light on a headband really helps. Hope everyone enjoys all the sharp edges under the dash.

Muchas gracias. Después de tanto buscar encontré su video y estoy muy agradecido con usted. Todos los videos que vi dicen como reemplazar el cilindro de la llave, pero ninguno hablaba de como reemplazar el switch de ignición. Y usted si lo hace. Gracias

Great video, really helped me out. I've done a switch of this type on several cars in the past, but your video really helped refresh my memory. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make the vid.

I'm doing this now on my 75 Chevy, and I was staring at the switch and not understanding how the rod connects into the ignition switch. Thanks for illustrating that for me. I'll get back to my Chevy tomorrow in the daylight, and hopefully the rod and switch will connect easily. A+

u got lucky, u see the slots in the new switch are to adjust the rod for switch, before u put it all back together u should tested to see if it start, some time u have to move the switch forward or back to have rod in right place to pull back to start

Either yours is different than mine or you left out some important steps. Mine is tilt steering and I had to put the key switch in accessory install ignition switch remove blue peg turn key switch to off position then crank engine. Caused me some frustration, then had to read directions to figure out the steps left out.

@ He Got Game that was an excellent video man ! I was able to find my problem and was more confident after seeing you do it. I want to know if the switch has a return spring inside. I was able to make it work until I bolted the column back then it stopped again. lever wouldn't move for some reason.

What does the blue pin do? Did it break off after i started it for the first time? It was hard to turn the key but my starter does not stay engaged anymore so the new switch seems to have corrected the problem.

My truck starts up good on the first time...when I turn truck off, I try to turn on and it cranks for like 10 econds and it starts...its weird because I have to take the key out then insert it again, then push key forward to prime then it turns on without fail.
