@@jimthecarguy Mission completed today. Not too tough. I decided to replace tie rod ends and got one that wasn't threaded so that put me on a hunt as nearby stores were out of stock. Luckily I found one and completed the job. Despite my best effort, steering wheel is a little off so next stop is alignment store. I did a system flush and then replaced the reservoir before changing out the rack. Wife is happy. DIY saved me some money too as this was probably a $1,000 repair at a shop. I think I did it for 450 ish including some new tools, jack stands. It did burn most of my day though but that is okay. Thanks again.

Very nice. Someone just gave me an ‘02 Tundra 4.7L 2wd for free. It needs the exhaust fixed and a new steering rack. And has a few more minor problem. But after watching this I’m pretty sure I can replace the rack myself. Thank you very much. You can’t beat a free truck.

@@ShnarfKat Yep it’s a nice truck now. But it had a tone of problems. I have almost $3000 in parts into it now. And I’m still not done fixing everything. I had to put new catalytic converters on it to get it to pass California smog so I could register it and that was $1000. But it’s definitely road worthy now and I’m driving the hell out of it. My buddy that I grew up with gave it to me. He did zero maintenance to it in the 4 years he had it. He just didn’t want to deal with it and wanted out of his yard. I knew the engine and tranny were solid so I took it.

The cap,on the right side that holds the steering rack was installed incorrectly, the hole must be position on the top. Its noticeable due to the stud was extending too long with the nut installed. The U-clamp mounting base are different in height for the intention not to over tightened the clamp with rubber bushing and damage the steering rack tube.

Not sure if it mattered or not, but the D ring on the right side of the r&p unit at 19:44 was installed upside down. The part with hole was on the top side previously.

Outstanding! Thank you so much! I may be overthinking things, but are there any special tips you can give to center the new rack? You mention in the video that you will center the rack so that your steering wheel will be roughly straight, but how do you go about finding the true center of the rack? Thanks!

This is a common problem on Sequoias and Tundras of this time. The rack itself rusts and mushrooms in that very spot. Damaging the bushings is only a side effect. I think the friction from the bushing marrs the surface enough to create rust.

So you disconnect the battery and then turn the key to run? Or do you turn it to run, disconnect battery, reconnect to turn it off....?

How many bolt do you remove from the steering side and how would I know if I installed it on center when I put the new rack?

Just had the steering rack replaced last week and the steering wheel was off by 45 degrees. Normally it's flat horizontally but now it's almost straight up and down to the left. Had it at an alignment shop today and they were able to get the wheels aligned, but not the steering wheel. Does the shaft just need to be disconnected at the rack then reconnected when the wheel is in the proper position? I plan on taking it back to them, but I'm curious what could have caused that to happen.

most likely the shop that installed it didn't pay attention to bringing the steering wheel true. Usually, this should be able to be compensated with an alignment job tho.

@@MrHadzo The alignment shop told me I'd have to take the steering shaft loose from the rack and rotate it. It was too much to adjust out. I don't think I'll go back to either shop again.
