This 15" 2013 Macbook Pro gets hot. Real hot. Let's get down and dirty with some thermal paste, shall we? One might say we will apply this thermal paste, like it's 2013, and we are working in the factory, like a pro, building a macbook for a guy who won't buy it until 2020.
So this is a story,
all about how,
my new macbook,
found itself upside down.
With screws and iso and a few q-tips,
and a curly haired guy makin lots of quips.
Had to replace the thermal,
because it was no good!
This is the story of a laptop with thermals ranked: poo.

found this video via your post on reddit. proud owner of a 2013 late model macbook here with the discrete gpu. i went the liquid metal route for my machine, and i said my fan speeds doing nominal work via youtube and browsing internet (firefox) using archlinux connected to an external 4k monitor at 60hz via the display port i'm averaging anywhere from 75C to 81C for my cpu, and fan speeds unfortunately spin at around 4000 RPM to around 5500 RPM. if i didn't here the fans spin i'd pretty happy with it. you can't hear them at around 2000 RPM (the idle) but once they creep into the 5000 RPM range you can definitely here them.

That's awesome! I ended up moving this machine because I was disappointed with the cooling. Sounds like yours isn't doing too bad though!

Thanks for not telling us about the importance of slowly covering and removing the screws on the compression spring. That sucker went flying across the room Lord knows where.

hello my friend xD Do you think if thermal pads are a good idea? I will put a thermal pad on both heatsinks
@CanadianComputerCollector
@CanadianComputerCollector 2 года назад
Paste is always better. Thermal pads are useful in many applications but if you have the option, use paste.

@@CanadianComputerCollector ohh i mean thermal pads between the back plate and heatsink

I’m thinking of a similar treatment for my MBP retina 15 early 2013. Just using it as a Minecraft Bedrock server atm and it gets quite loud with 5 people on... also quite laggy they say. Do you reckon the paste replacement would help?

The design of these is the biggest limiting factor. If I were you I'd sell it and put the money into an older desktop. It'll be quieter, faster, and have better thermals. Sub to the channel - my next video is going to be about building a PC that's at least as good as the steam deck for $150.

My 2015 MacBook Pro is unstable after a long time of use, so I think I will change the thermal paste.

Good plan. I'd also suggest a really good cleaning. Those things collect dust like I collect disapproval from people much cooler than I.

Hey quick question, what were your temps before and after redoing thermal paste under load and idle. im also considering doing this to my 15' 2013. This thing gets hotter than any macbook ive previously owned
@CanadianComputerCollector
@CanadianComputerCollector 3 года назад
Hi Paul! Temps were usually around 70 to 80 celcius when browsing online and then would hit 99 celcius when playing games like Minecraft. Sadly I sold the thing as I was worried about how hot it got and didn't want to be the one to take the hit on depreciation. In your case, I would suggest doing the thermal paste, cleaning out the fans and vents, then purchasing a fan controller that gives you real-time time readouts. Also try not to work with it while on your lap. Ideally, you would use a laptop stand with a fan on the bottom.

@@CanadianComputerCollector Hitting 99C under load has been a problem since I bought mine new - I asked apple and they told me that was normal. 7 years later it's starting to fail, so I'm going to try this thermal paste replacement.

That is called TG Pro. I think it cost ~$14CAD. It isn't downloadble on my 2010 which is running High Sierra atm. Worked on Mojave on the one in this video!
