Solved overheating problem on my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2015 by replacing the thermal paste

Hey guys. I have a offer for a mbp 2015 brand new battery, always protection,no scratches whatsoever for a brilliant price. The thing is the owner is a graphic designer and photographer, so I think the MacBook was used under constant work imagining she worked like 8 hours full capacity on graphic programmes etc. Should I worry or be concerned? Thanks guys

I personally think it should not be a big concern especially since you said yourself that the MBP is in perfect condition. What I would definitely do if I were you would be to open it up and clean it thoroughly.

Dario Prski - when I read his question, I felt he was asking about the actual BATTERY by saying “brand new battery” .... The confusion for me was how he then went on to say it was “always protection (protected), no scratches...” and he fears it was under a constant work load which means it’s NOT “brand new” but actually used. Either way, here’s MY QUESTIONS to you... (i also have the 2015 MBP 13” and i am looking to open it and upgrade whatever i can.) Your PASTE suggestion WILL BE IMPLEMENTED.. 1. Are battery replacements possible? 2. If his question WAS about a used battery only, isn’t there a way to TEST IT prior to purchase the same way one might use a multi-meter (or other devices) to test used standard batteries?? This would be a great video topic.. 3. I’m upgrading the SSD and have learned that the RAM is soldered in place by Apple. However, solder can be reversed, so are there RAM upgrades available for this MBP if we are willing to desolder/solder or pay a repair tech?? 4. Aside from SSD & RAM upgrades, are there ANY OTHER UPGRADES (regardless of difficulty level) that are possible for this 2015 MBP that will increase performance or longevity?? Another great video idea. 5. I noticed on a “tear down” video of this 2015 MBP that the Thunderbolt 2 controller was accessible/removable..... Can we remove it and UPGRADE to Thunderbolt 3 if we don’t mind the obvious negative exterior appearance side effects?? If so, would anything else need to be upgrading to accommodate this T3 to work properly? Finally - 6. Are you aware of any successful radical modifications such as adding a gigabit Ethernet connector or other ports OR MODULES that were not already there? I left a comment on the video complimenting you on this video. You truly did do a wonderful job. I have other channels with many subscribers and I still have NEVER thought to use the sweeping video effect you used when showing the MBP in the beginning... I don’t normally show items, as my content is geared more toward political topics, but it’s still an effect I LOVE that I should use when showing still photography or slow motion scenes... your video has encouraged me to experiment with this. Depends. You saw the state of my thermal paste in the video. Cleaning just the dust would help a bit but only doing that without repasting would not yield any major results. Cleaning it is a common sense thing if you are taking it apart. If you are using it for 2+ years then you definitely have to clean it. Thanks for noticing!

@Bobby Brady Yes, but you saw the state in which my existing paste was in. Completely dry. That's not the condition in which thermal paste should be for a device that runs this hot.

Dried out, poorly applied thermal paste is a problem for heat transfer. If you look up the topic of thermal paste for MacBooks you will see a lot of articles indicating that for some unknown reason Apple does a poor job with the thermal paste and that the quality of the paste that they use is also questionable. I never said that cleaning up the dust didn't help but replacing the thermal paste helped just as well as cleaning. Take a look at the pinned post from another user and you will see that it actually helps. For me, other users reporting that this tutorial helped them reduce the temperature is enough evidence that this works. I am not doing a research study here. It's just a practical video to help people with their overheating MacBooks, so keep that in mind.

Did the whole process that I have shown in the video help me improve the performance? Yes it did. Did other people report similar or same results after following my tutorial? Yes they did. What I demonstrated in this video works. I proved my point. End of story. If you are looking for scientific evidence then go to researchgate.net

@Bobby Brady If you want a video comparing various thermal interface materials there's plenty out there that demonstrates that dry cracking stock dow corning crap that doesn't make proper die contact is reliably rubbish at transferring heat. That's not the point of this video.

@@xhuliok1951 I mean just sitting on the desktop doing nothing. It used to idle at 55-60. And after using liquid metal it went way down. Fan speeds also stayed lower under load or playing a game.

Hello Ranalaped, how was the temperature and fan speed after you did the trick?

​@@nongdankitty After I replaced the thermal paste, the fan's stayed below 3000 rpm when web browsing, watching youtube, watching movies, and general light/medium usage. The temperature was normally in the mid to high 60's too, beforehand they would be in the high 70's and even 80's, with the fans on maximum, with the same light/medium usage. The fans will still of course spin up to maximum when playing demanding games and such, but that's to be expected with any laptop.

Haha no I am not kidding you Kelson 😀 That was my first video. I never did any video production in my life. I just looked at other youtubers how they film things and then just filmed in a similar way. BTW I used a Galaxy S8 to film that whole video and edited it in Final Cut (that was also the first time for me using Final Cut). Thanks for the tip John! With the ThermalGrizzly paste you also get a small spreader, but probably your method works effectively as well.

@@DigitalPulse I prefer the finger method because it gives you more tactile feel for a thin, even, smooth coat. Also, I always use compressed air to blow out the insides before starting to remove any parts (your fans were pretty clogged!) I recently did this procedure to my 15" Late 2013 Retina 2.6 i7, and while it didn't reduce peak temps that much, the fans were so much quieter - they didn't have to spool up to max speed. I should get that Intel Power Gadget - is that free?

IDK man I am clueless myself. I work in a clean office environment 5 days a week where the laptop is always on my desk. I assume it's because I used it every single day for couple of hours in bed to skype. Skype heats up the MacBook, the vents spin faster and pull in more air and then I assume they pull in dust and debris from bed lined. That's my assumption... 😁

Do you use the stock SSD? I installed just the 970 EVO 500GB and installed the Mojave, and yes it is a good feeling to set up a clean fresh system! 😜

Sadly I need to agree, thermal paste in most cases is dry when device is delivered, or at least semi-dry. I can 'dry-out' Arctic Silver 5 in 12 months typical use (not one from '99 but current one, which means current product is much worse). I assume that even thermal grizzly Kyronaut should be replaced after 18 months use. Not to mentioning the cleaning of the fans and internals.

I know right! And I have no idea how. I used the MacBook on a daily basis in a clean office and the only thing that I did in the evening was holding it on my lap or bed while using it to browse the internet or watch a movie. I think a lot of the dust actually comes from the bedsheets.

Hello! Thanks for the feedback. I completely follow what you are saying. I agree, the dust had a big impact on the performance but when you look at the old thermal paste and it's state, I think the re-application of the paste also contributed. In general, MacBooks are quite famous for having a poorly applied thermal paste. Regarding the video export, you are right there as well. I did notice it whenever I had to export a larger clip, it would indeed decrease the performance. But I am planning to do a follow up on this video. A comment below you can see @Chinchy recommending me to undervolt the MacBook and then try, so that's something I am planning to do for the next video. Thanks for taking time to watch the video! Actually DO NOT vacuum dust out for your pc EVER. Vacuuming creates static and can potentially damage components that way.
