I found these videos to be informative but I still couldn't get the beeping to stop even in a new device with new batteries. I drained the charge and restored the power but it still chirped. I finally decided to look at the other smoke alarms in the system. I found an old battery which I removed and replaced. I then did a re-cycle of the problem device and when I restored power and inserted the battery it was quiet. Its been quiet for 10 hours. I have concluded that the failing battery in the other unit was affecting the completely new smoke detector. I really hope this is helpful.
This video got me back to sleep. I was up between 1 am and 2:30 am with the low battery chirp and feeling incredibly helpless. You saved me! My "manual" said nothing about discharging the detector by holding the button down after the batteries were removed. It also did not explain the weird red latches (what should I call them?) that had to be held down to install the batteries, or what to do with the weird yellow tape (please!). I followed the directions with little hope that it would actually work, but to my amazement it did. I am a 65 year old woman living alone. You and the rest of the commenters here (I read all of them, they were super helpful) are my heroes! Long live RU-vid.
Man, your video is the only one that actually showed how to drain the additional power by removing the detector from the clip!!! You deserve all the stars ⭐️
4 am and the alarm has been beeping for 2 hours. We have done everything even turned off the electricity. Still beeping. Now we are removing it as you said. Thank you.

I knew a guy who tried that with an old wall outlet that hadn't been used in years. He stuck iron prongs into it and then pressed his tongue against them. Poor guy. May he rest in peace. He was a big anti-Trump guy. Loved Bernie Sanders.
After replacing and resetting all the smoke detectors in my house, the chirp continued. Got so frustrated I almost ripped them all out. Turns out it was the damn carbon monoxide detector. 🤦🏾♂️

Thanks, this video was very helpful. I thought I was going crazy for a second, I swapped out 3 different fresh batteries and the beeping wouldn't shut off. Unplugging it from AC, removing the battery and discharging it for 15 seconds did the trick!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! After 3 new batteries, and an hour standing on the ladder, I was about to rip the whole freaking unit right off the ceiling!

Thanks for posting this, Michael. I just reset the faulty alarm that was waking us between 1 and 2 AM regularly. I took the time to do the rest of the house's alarms as well. Hopefully we've heard the last of the chirping. While I had them down, I also blew some dust out of each one with compressed air, as I had read about elsewhere. Seemed like a good idea. Much appreciated!

I'm here at this video at 0235 in the morning. A chirping smoke detector brought me hear. I've watched 3 video so far and it's still chirping. How is it we can send a man to the freaking moon but can't master a decent smoke detector that allows your family to sleep?!?!?! I'm literally about to burn my freaking house down to shut it up. It's aggravating beyond belief.
Jessica Dunn Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. We definitely understand your annoyance with the Smoke Detector. What’s the update? Let’s get this figured out together! Chirping Detectors are almost always caused by a low battery voltage. Over the years, the battery loses voltage & then causes the detector to chirp. Replacing your old battery with a new battery should help. If it doesn’t, let’s move to the next step of the troubleshooting process. Keep us posted, Let’s get this figured out! 😎👍 Please subscribe to the channel and turn on your RU-vid notification Bell 🛎 that would be awesome thanks again! 👍

Guys, any detector in the house could be causing the chirping so check all batteries before condemning a new Kidde alarm like many have done. Wired alarms work off of each other.
Thank you so much for this video. Our dog was having serious anxiety with the chirping. Your directions were perfect. Thank you for doing a step-by-step
We appreciate that, hopefully many stress free days ahead for you and your dog. We definitely understand the annoyance that a chirping detector can cause.😁👍
We had to defective smoke alarms, put in the same place when the maintenance guy took them out it was tripping on the ground without being connected, and without a battery being in at my dog almost had a heart attack. I had to take him outside. He was panting so bad.
Giving you my subcription means I am satisfied on your video. I follow your instruction then bang on got the chirping out and she is sulent now Thank you bro.

It is now 2018 and I STILL don't understand why we need batteries for a smoke detector that is wired, what's the point and purpose of the battery and the battery door if you have to unhook it from the base and do all that you did in this video?

NVHSChadSheppard1 You are spot on! That little battery is pretty darn important in that it is the emergency backup power source. Thanks again for watching! 😎👍🔧🔩
DIY With Michael Borders my question is why the battery drains of power IF it is only running on the AC power supply until a power outage? I've had batteries last years in seasonal Christmas decorations than a Duracell battery in a AC powered fire alarm.

My smoke detector is HARDWIRED into the ceiling RIGHT OVER THE STOVE. Whatever architectural genius did that move - it literally goes off EVERY time I make toast. Like not even toasted toast. Just plugging in the friggin' toaster will set it off. Needless to say ... it's a nightmare.
Holly Robinson 😲 That is wild! That is definitely an interesting set up & not normal code. By chance, was the house remodeled years ago & the kitchen was not in its current place before the remodel? Our only thought is that a remodel took place before you entered home & that hard wired Smoke Detector was always there however it may have been a living room or something. Thanks for watching, great question. The battery is the backup source of power and will activate if main power to home is lost. That said, removing electrical connection from detector and leaving it in this configuration will lead to you having to replace a lot of batteries…however the more important thing to consider is once the detector is removed from hard wired connection point, it’s no longer operating to code. 👍

Thank you for this well explained video! There’s nothing worse than a heart-stopping alarm at 3:30am, getting a ladder to change the battery, AND IT GOES OFF AGAIN!! Thanks Michael, this is just what I needed to know. I climbed a shaky 16 foot ladder to change the battery on a wired smoke detector, and as soon as I got down, it started beeping again. I never had to reset it before inserting a new battery but I replaced the battery again with a new one and did the reset this time and it is now not beeping any more. I tested both batteries with a cheap Radio Shack analog tester and both were in the GOOD zone. But I measured the voltage of both, as you suggest in the video, and I found the first battery to be at only 7.6V. The second one was at 9.33V, so I don't know if the problem was the lower voltage of the first battery, alone, or the fact that I did not reset the unit, or both. Probably the low voltage alone, but it is better to do the simple reset anyway, just in case.

The Reset after disconnect is a great idea. In our case we installed a brand new 9 Volt battery. The chirping began several hours later. I yanked the new battery out and ran a battery test which started at 6 volts and quickly dropped to 0 volts in seconds. A brand new Duracell battery was the issue. Bad quality control by Duracell perhaps.

Thanks for watching. You shouldn’t need to however some detectors may require it. Have you fixed your issue? Please let us know if you have any additional questions. 👍🧰
It did, but unfortunately, the chirp came back after a day. They might be too old and need to be replaced. Still really appreciate your video with the clear instructions! Especially to test the device without being wired/connected to the rest of the alarms really help to minimize that obnoxious noise. Also, now I know I did everything correctly, but I just need to replace the alarms. Thank you for making this tutorial clip 🙏
@@k7282 Thanks for the follow up. In that case, we think you’re spot on. Replacing the detector might be the best route to take since the old one is not cooperating with the full system drain procedure. 😁👍
