Hi all,
Firstly, sorry I haven't been able to finish fitting our double gate yet.
As we're working on our drive, I needed do a few other jobs first to get ready for some gravel.
And one of them was to replace our manhole with one we could place gravel in and make more discrete.
We used:

Mortar (3 part sharp sand, 1 part cement)
A small trowel (£1.99) from my local hardware store.

Thank you for showing how to do this correcty for a tight fit of the frame etc. We had the slightest crack and it proved sufficient for rodents to escape and invade our home. Once the source was found and cemented up the rodent problem could be dealt with.

Just come across your vids really enjoying them and good for you for getting stuck in job well done 👍 little tip on getting the manhole square...remove top course of bricks and when you re-lay them you can corball them over to where you need them to be you can get away with 25mm overhang .. let them set then bed your manhole cover you can gain abit on that aswell hope that helps im a brickie and its a trick we use sometimes on site to straighten old manholes up 👌

Lovely neat and professional job done Vicky and your Fiancé in the background..... you sure turn your hand to anything and love the fact you got stuck in and got your hands dirty i/e no marigold gloves on as you can wash up those dirty hands-on completion.A little bit of dirt on hands sure won't kill you...the blanket down the hole was a great idea save loosing bits of masonry down the drainage pipes....!!!! regards and best wishes Mike

I would also add it would be wise to ascertain the final height you want the cover to be before mortaring in, e.g. you might want to add or remove a course of the bricks. Maybe wasn't important for this job but most other jobs it might be.

Nice job on the manhole vicky they are a pain in the ar... when on your side/reaponsibility. Also do agree with couple of comnents While gravel/stone/shingle etc is a cost affective way to tidy up a drive it can soon become a nightmare. Cats use as litter tray. The weight of vehicles penatrares the base/stone into the weed control so it ends up punctured/growing through and you end up having to top up regular as its surprsing how much you loose through transfer from car tyres etc. We did stick with it for almost 2 years then we went for a printed concrete. But now the new resin drives look great and are far more cost affective you can also get DIY kits simthing i would look into anyway. But fair play anyway for doing all this espechally this time of year.

Hi Have found several of your vids v useful thanks. Just doing the same job with 4 drain covers but unsure as to what to fill the recess cover with? Have you just filled it with the gravel or will the edge of this become a trip hazard? No vehicles over but Mum pulling her wheely bins over and I don't want her to fall. Thanks Jane

Bed the frame on mortar with the cover in place. Hunch up to the top of the crane with 10mm down sharp sand concrete. This give a strong them ring to support the cover frame. Just relying on a mortar “glue” will fail. Ask me how I know.

hi and nice job may i give you a tip i worked for seven trent and i had to lift them all the time. i would greecs the sides one to trap the smells and two if you need to lift again its much easy

ive fitted 100s of them and think its great to see people getting the info to try them selfs,your very handy well done ,some people don't like being near manholes ,if it needs done why not give it a try,always keep anything from going in drain if you don't you will get big problems,again well done ,its great to see women can do anything if they put their minds to it,top job

You can to be incredibly careful. I would try to avoid if possible and find out exactly what's under there. I did it by hand around the electrical box area.

Probably should mention that it needs to be a sealed drain cover if it is going over a foul drain. Don't think the one you used is.

Block pavers are very much the same job as your patio slabs , different scale is all , gravel drives are good to keep the burglars away ,, both need weed treatment , I spray my pavers with a mixture of vinegar salt n fairy liquid , try to keep it dog friendly -), I would say gravel is way faster and cheaper ,, nice work on the manhole cover -)

Thank you +ian smith. That's what I thought regarding the patio! I've sold it to myself now for the very same reason abiut burglars, where Hans can warn us and easier/cheaper. I initially hated the idea but after seeing some, I've changed my mind. I'm planning on buying a stone that we can compress too for less movement.

Nicely done. But why go with gravel? Looks ok but sounds horrible and will get caught in the treads of your shoes, scratch the hell out of the hardwood floor whenever a bit gets stuck under a door. Have you looked at the fake grass thats available now? Its cheap, hard wearing,looks great and drains really well. Just a thought.

Do it yourself easy job would only cost £150 at most in materials about 6hrs work. lay in it on sand and cement and go around the edge flaunching with a diffrent mix of concrete

Nah, I removed the concrete there a bit too early, so I temporary covered it with bricks at the front so nothing would fall down.

A couple of points,- DONT put your foot on it to level it, it will rise on the other side! Use a spirit level and tap down all round with a hammer to level. 3-1 mix is a bit strong , 5-1 mortar is usual. Dont put the lid on until the mortar bed has gone off. the extra weight can squeeze the mortar, Finaly, your old manhole was cast iron, not wrought iron.
