I love to see how the two of you works good as a team. Beyond else, love and respect for each other strengthens relationships. It's good to see you do all the repairs you can. that in itself will save money bigtime. I am disabled, long distant trucker, but you inspire me. If I get to where I can drive again, I'm gonna look into expiditing. KEEP ON TRUCK ING.

Wonder if it would help to coat the new bag with some sort of vinyl/rubber protectant before installing to help keep it soft and moist rather that drying out?

Good job. Ok, I’m very curious since you mentioned that those shocks frequently go bad, how often have you had to replace one? Usually it is one that goes, right, or do you replace both just in case? It makes sense to have an extra 2 airbags on hand then. Good rule! Here’s something I’ve learned...You always need an extra hand even if it’s a small job, for the extra hand is very helpful. Stay safe. God bless all of our truckers! Porter Dude of Ohio.

Just a tip. If the bags are made of rubber material, a great way to preserve and make them last longer is to coat them with brake fluid occasionally. It's the best rubber preservative! I even use it on my tires.. Ever look inside a brake master cylinder? What's the seal always wet with.. yep. , brake fluid! For vinyl and door seals, I use heavy duty silicone spray. Works great!

If you bend the air line over after you unhook it from push lock fitting and zip tie it the other bags will stay air up so you can pull old one out and put new in the slowly left the line unfold to let the air out can do same with truck air bags

A garage will tell you certain things has to be done in order to fix something and they do it a easier way and faster way then what they tell you. They say that so they can charge you a lot more for the work. And even though they get done faster they act like they ain't done just to hold up. Peace safe and keep on trucking

Ships don't want there mechanics to do it this way, in case other bag fails. But they all do it this way, you can change the suspension air bags the same way just unhook the arm from the leveling valve, and let the good airbag lift the truck.

I did it 3 times, the outer airbags is easy, but the ones in the middle are a pain the ass!!! I have the same problems with the nuts with the new airbags, it doesnt fit with the old nut, so i have to get some from Napa.

Hey Jason a block of wood inside between the frame and the sleeper would have kept that thing from collapsing on your little bit. FYI for future changes
@happypappy6371
@happypappy6371 5 лет назад
Bolt threads are either course, fine or metric. When you get a new airbag, you could go to any hardware store and get the proper nut to fit it. When you cross thread the wrong thread type onto a bolt, you partially strip the material off, thus weakening the connection. The most common thread for larger items is course thread, but if it was made in Mexico, Canada or over seas, it may be metric.

This coming from a shade tree mechanic (me), there are a few things I see here. #1. If you ever have to replace another one of these, or if the new ones come with a new nut you can check this. Look at the inside of the nut (and from what I could see on the video) you might see what look like threads that are a little bigger then then the rest of the threads at one end of the nut. If these longer threads are there they are put there to lock the nut into place so it doesn't come loose while your going down the road. They may even be barbed slightly to grab the plastic stud. This could be why they seem like they are cross threading while your putting them on. #2. You can place a chock, or a block of wood between your frame and the airbag cross brace. When you let the air out of the system it should give you enough room to get the deflated bag out and the new one back in. Then once your done, just air the bags up and pull the chock out. #3. If this is something that happens so often that you carry spare parts with you at all times, then might I suggest you get a socket or wrench (aside from that monkey wrench) that will fit that nut. It will allow you to get in there much easier. But you knew this, and have been meaning to get one....Right?...LoL. Safe travels!!

Just 2 comments/suggestions: 1) if you use the correct size open end/box end wrench to loosen and tighten that bottom nut instead of that bulky adjustable wrench,it would probably make that part a bit easier as the open end/box wrench is smaller and allow you to have easier access to the nut. IMO adjustable wrenches are handy,but the correct size wrench is the perfect tool for jobs like this. 2) you might think about applying a product ,such as Armor All, to your airbags periodically to keep them supple which might give you longer life from them. If that airbag is original,then it didn't last very long.
@anthonypirrello2473
@anthonypirrello2473 5 лет назад
I thought about the socket and extension,but I don't think you can get a deep enough socket to reach the nut. Good idea on the boards.
@anthonypirrello2473
@anthonypirrello2473 5 лет назад
My bad - your socket and extension will work. I misjudged the distance the nut was from the bottom of the threaded rod.

If you stop in a machine shop real quick, they will be able to tell you the SAE or number of threads per inch, and if its a metric or american thread on your air bags & the nut & what size they are. Then you can buy the proper nut that goes on the air bag or purchase a inexpensive "die" (carbon steel) and handle and re-thread the threads on the air bag. While you are there they can tell you what socket fits that nut, and you can purchase and inexpensive ratchet wrench and "deep-well" socket to fit that nut to make that repair go even smoother...................... I noted heather's remark about the nut, you owe her one Jason LOL.................... But all in all, great job Jason..... Note: the better dies or taps are made from HSS or high speed steel, and I recommend that over carbon steel for a lot of uses or tougher metals. For example a carbon steel die will only last once or twice threading metal while high speed steel will last probably 30 times or more and use thread cutting oil or a good heavy oil regardless if plastic or metal when tapping or using the die on a female threaded end of an object (always use oil). 3& 1 works in a pinch, apply often.

Not to be one of the "Safety Sallys" around here, but be careful under the cab, like that. Watch for anywhere the cab comes close to the frame or fuel tank, batteries, air tanks, etc. Stay our of any potential pinch points. It's not worth saving a $150 shop bill over getting your hand or arm trapped between the cab and frame. If you have a block of wood between the truck frame and cab frame that may help hold the space open for the new air bag.
