Replacing A Wiper Arm On The 1981 Silverado

Years before, a body shop had used an improper procedure to remove my wiper arms. Shortly after that, the driver's side arm had failed, so I sourced a replacement, and the correct tool to remove the arm, see link below. Many years later, another, for the passenger side showed up on ebay, for not a terrible price. After a bit of cleaning, and polishing, it's ready to be installed. In this video I demonstrate the tool. I had some trouble getting the tool lined up, not being able to see the spring tab. Once locked on, I was quickly able to remove the arm, with no damage! Only thing I noticed, is this must be a later production. It was cheapened down by only using one rivet for holding the assembly together. Minor detail. At least I'm not seeing plier marks on the wiper arm any longer, and I can put the old arm in the tool box, in case I need it in the future.

I have spent 2 hrs trying to find a video of this clarity and exactitude. Outstanding... I think it is exactly what I need for my 1976 F150. Thank you for the effort you put into this.

Nice camera work! The angle from inside really showed how that worked. Fortunately, I had never needed to replace the arms on my 81 Chevy, I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar. A lot of cars now just bolt the arm on to the shaft with an acorn nut. They do have the tendency to loosen sometimes, but otherwise, there are no special tools required, just a plain old wrench.

Thank you! I was hoping between two camera angles, one would show how the tool worked. I would imagine the Citation used the Trico wiper assemblies as well! The '04 bolts on, and so far, I've not had any trouble with them coming loose.

4:07 Use a toothbrush with a little mild solvent on the splined stud prior to reinstalling and then lubricate with a lithium grease very lightly. Great video just throwing out a helpful tip. Happy trucking!

Yeah, the studs were still mint, but I did coat them off camera, because my camera man forgot to hit record, on take 1, haha! Always appreciate the tips!

Very useful. Thanks sir. I will fix the wipers of my 1981 Chevy Custom Deluxe myself, with the right tool.

I did that to my truck about 10 years ago. Same as Issac mine had stripped out, most likely from years of trying to wipe heavy snow or ice but it actually failed during a warmer season where Ice and snow wasn't a problem. The splines on the shaft got a bit chewed up from the arm stripping out so I really had to force the replacement on. I sure hope I never have to replace it again because getting it back off is going to be very difficult.

I bet it will be tough to get that arm back off. Hopefully it will last for a long while. I don't have the trouble with snow like you two get! maybe once, or twice during the "winter." In fact, I'm making Jay's buffalo chicken out on the grill this evening!

@@dynatrak My truck doesn't see snow anymore. It's parked in the garage for the winter. It's horrible/dangerous to drive in snow or ice. If you drive it on snow you can lightly touch the brakes and the front wheels lock up and the engine still is turning the rear wheels so you totally lose steering and the only way to stop is to lock up all four wheels so you have no control at all. I've probably driven it twice since the holidays and the roads have to be totally bare or I won't even consider it.

@@tallboyyyy Yep, that's exactly why I work from home, when there is icy weather! I have plenty of computer work, as well as driving to do each week.

I love those classic squarebody Chevys so much! They are just awesome looking. I really like the blue color of yours, just a nice, classic look.

Thanks! It's really close to the original factory color. I still see a lot of squarebodies on the road, and agree, they are awesome!

It is SHOCKING how similar that armature is to my 93 jeep grand. i feel like the cookie-cuttered the design and for a darn good reason. its a good design that can be enjoyed by all vehicle owners.
@dynatrak
@dynatrak 2 года назад
Yeah, this design was used for many years, makes, and models. I didn't realize it was being used as late as '93 though. That's awesome!

I had to replace my passenger's side one a month ago or so. There was one morning where I forgot to unfreeze the wipers before using them, and the motor on the passenger's one just stripped the shaft on the arm right out. It was as easy as going to my junkyard, and getting 2 replacements (I grabbed 2 because they had 2, one from a 97 Monte Carlo and one from an 01 Lumina) and installed them. I had tried fixing the original one to make it work (one method involved a paperclip and twist ties) and it would work for a little, and then fail again. It's all good now, and I haven't' had any problems since. I also now always remember to unfreeze the wipers.

I'm glad you were able to successfully get yours repaired! Good idea to thaw the wipers before turning on the wiper motor. I can see how that extra weight would cause the arms to strip out.
@isaac24
@isaac24 2 года назад
Yup, that's exactly what did it. There was a few weeks between when it broke and when I got the new wiper arm, where I just took the entire passenger's one off, and just drove with one wiper. it didn't rain, since it was in December-January, but at least it was the passenger's one. If it was the driver's once, I would have gotten a replacement a lot sooner. I now always manually un-freeze them by lifting them up. You'd think you could stand them up the night before snow, but for some odd reason, mine don't stand up. You can lift them about 5 inches from the windshield, and that's it.
@dynatrak
