We are continuing with some boat maintenance projects while anchored in St. Martin, a French Caribbean Island. After sailing thousands of nautical miles and anchoring 99% of the time while living offered cruising full time for the past three years, it's time to replace our 300’ of galvanized anchor chain. We purchase new chain and swap the old chain for the new all while at anchor, but not without facing some challenges along the way.

"Whoops, that's backwards!" is far too common in my life. Also my shins cried out in sympathy when you kneeled across the anchor roller - ouch!

Travis, one thing I did notice that was crucial in your install was that you had chain between then swivel and the anchor, amazing my man. Not that you wouldn't have known not to do that but still lol, another job well done, every time you do something it lets us all learn from your, lets call them trials and tribulations hahaha, new chain looks mighty nice

Just a thought - If I were considering stealing a dinghy, I'd much prefer one that's secured with something I can more easily cut through with a common hacksaw blade (that I can hide in my waistband). Something like chainlinks. If your dink is protected by a hefty piece of covered lifeline cable, I'd be a bloody mess by the time I got even part way through that! Bonus: that'll treat all my equipment much nicer, too!

It really only deters the honest thieves. If someone really wants to steal a dinghy, doesn’t matter how it’s secured. Have seen this first hand

It certainly helps to fill a day to have to redo the project. I often wonder what we'd fill our time with without the costs of our silly mistakes. Even when there's time to do it right there's always enough time to fix it. G'head, be human.

I suppose just switching out the colored wire ties to the correct ones would have been easier, but an undesirable waste of plastic....?

We had chain that wasn’t a multiple of 25 so we had an off amount at the end which wouldn’t have been a direct switch of colours. Would have had to remeasure it all

Always love to watch the adventures and also learn as I can through your videos. May I ask, for your particular boat, what type of chain did you go with (now that you two have sailed for some time)? It looked like you now have 200ish ft of chain. Just curious on the size (thickness?) of the chain and type of chain that you decided was right bang for the buck? Best of luck and happiness on your new 2024 season of adventures!
@SailingJibsea
@SailingJibsea 5 месяцев назад
We had 300’ of chain but decided we only needed 210’ this time around. Kept the same size chain of 8mm as that’s what our windlass is sized for, otherwise we would have upgraded to 10mm

Question : why did you dump your old chain overboard ? You are next to a marina who can recycle it, or it may be use by someone else ! Did you check it out before your dump it ? I understand the concept of électrolyse and that in time “ Years” the chain will be completely dissolve but… if you want to do so I think it will be more wise to do so not where you did it but rather to deeper weather, out or reach by other boats anchors.
@SailingJibsea
@SailingJibsea 5 месяцев назад
If you watched the full episode, you would have seen we sunk it with an end attached to a buoy for the person who was coming to pick up the chain like an hour later… Nonetheless, of course we wouldn’t sink anything in the anchorage
@eddieohearn17

As I was watching, I was wondering what the anchor winless is and did you bother to purchase a small section of chain and tested this is always a very, very, very good idea. and the reason I say that is because I worked in a repair yard and people made a lot of mistakes ordering 300 feet of chain only to discover it did not work in their windless, even if the size was the same
@SailingJibsea
@SailingJibsea 5 месяцев назад
yes it was the opening of the video, we brought our windlass to the marine store to check and then actually brought a small piece of the chain back with us to test it with the windlass re-installed to ensure no skips. Would totally suck to buy that much chain and not have it work!
@eddieohearn17
@eddieohearn17 5 месяцев назад
@@SailingJibsea most people don’t do what you did and they find himself stuck with 300 feet of chain that they have to give away because they can’t return it.

I really enjoy your channel and discovered you guys because you came through my town on the Erie Canal. I do have one question, why didn't you just replace the Zipties with the proper color? Keep on keepin' on!
@SailingJibsea
@SailingJibsea 5 месяцев назад
awesome! . We liked to start our first marker at 50' and then continue onwards with 25' increments until the tail end which ended at an off number (Because we bought an off number of chain) so we couldn't just switch the colours without it being off
@joemckibben7757
@joemckibben7757 5 месяцев назад
Couldn’t you have just swapped out the colored markers?
@SailingJibsea
@SailingJibsea 5 месяцев назад
It was an off length of chain so the tail end wasn’t exactly the same. We would have had to remeasured

It was a hard bilge paint but just a quick fix and will probably redo it with an epoxy-based, unless this ends up really holding up

chain was bought instore. It's about $6-7/foot and reason why it took 2 days was because the stock was over in their store on the dutch side and they brought it to the French side for us to pick up

Canadians refer to different things in either metric or imperial. It’s weird. Plus when you travel the world, you pick up on different things and just say what we feel at the moment

Sorry, but I couldn't finish this video. What's the big deal? What was wrong with taking 20 minutes to dinghy home? What's the hurry? Such drama. "We are not anchored right now." It was one of those flat calm days in SXM. A good principle is KISS.
@SailingJibsea
@SailingJibsea 5 месяцев назад
It wasn’t “drama” except stating what it was and merely bringing our viewers along with exactly what’s happening in the moment. If there was real ‘drama’ or a sense of worry or hurry, you would have heard a much different tone
