Thanks for this great video. I could not have done it without it. Fortunately my model had an improved design and I did not need to disassemble the chute, but I followed every other step. My two cents advice, actually coming from my wife, is to heat with a hairdryer the plastic knob controls and hoses before removing them. It will make your life a lot easier.
Just loose the hide screw with a 10mm wrench, remove the other ones and just lift the cover a little bit to the front, I just did it like that on mine, No need to remove the whole cover, thanks for the video!
I wanted to thank you for this video. It was straight forward and you showed each step you took. This saved me from taking the snowblower to the shop. Cleaning the carb did get it running for me. Again, thank you.
Excellent video, and spot on! Definitely a pain in the butt to get to the carb, but better to replace than to try to clean (tried this and didn't help). New carb cost was $18, and machine runs perfectly now.
Thank you BravoFix. This video will save hours off of your life. Did a $13 carb replacement and it fix the issue. Without this video it would have been a painful experience since the Craftsman cover is not an easy removal. This guy is my hero.
I went thru the same thing with my chain saw. New carburetors are so inexpensive it does not pay to rebuild or clean them anymore.I just ordered a new carburetor for my very old snow blower for just twenty bucks or so. It is a pain to take apart. I it feels so good when you are done if it works right!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for great video! I enjoyed it.
I just used the snowblower today and it started up right away. I have a feeling that a lot of the factory carbs are pretty crappy. Seems like even buying a cheap one is better than the factory ones. Glad you were able to fix it.

This video was a great help. Drain the old gas, clean the carb, replace the spark plug, drain old oil, put in new oil and fill with new gas. After several attempts, it started and now runs good. Thank you.

I am currently changing the carburator on the exact same model. MOST FRUSTRATING THING EVER! You can bet the next time I am shopping and see the word "Craftsman" I will remember their mwethod of design. Thank you for posting, I thought I was just stupid and couldn't see how easy this really was.
Yep I know what you're saying. But it's not just Craftsman it's most manufacturers that don't want the consumer to fix things. They want you to go buy a new one. But I gotta say I've had pretty good luck with Crafstman, they last me a long time. Glad you were able to fix it.
I have a newer Craftsman and after only one season it did the same thing. Carb is identical but all the covers are different, less covers. The problem is with the Chinese materials used in the float boat and tank. They degrade due to the alcohol in the fuel. To clean the carb, the main jet needs to be removed by unscrewing the main which has a metering jet below it which will drop out with the main jet. You need to use carb cleaner and compressed air to clear all the small passages in the carb. You also need to pull the fuel line from the tank and verify it’s not plugged too. My snowblower only went thru 5 gal of fuel in one season and I didn’t drain the tank completely in the spring and that’s all it took to gum up my carb and tank. Buy ethanol free fuel, use a fuel conditioner and drain the tank. Other than that I love my snowblower.
I think mine has the same problem...I bought one used yesterday.....Its in great condition....Took it home and it started right up In the choke position....As i slowly put it towards the run position i had problems with it bogging out and stops running....Do you think it's a dirty carb? In the choke position its runs fine.....Kinda weird

Left my brand new snowblower in the shed for three years, i think I used it once the year i bought it, then made sure to take it during the divorce. Although it started on the second pull, it runs rough, and kills on heavy load. Yeh, want to do a carb cleaning, but holy crap, what a nightmare to get at it. @TheCapstone100 951-14026A , 951-14027A , 951-10368A the replacement carb I purchased was listed as for these carb numbers. eBay seller was yibei-tech I paid $11. When it arrived I removed to find 11 acorns in the choke port, lol, I didn’t completely remove the carb just cleaned out the acorns and slipped the carb back on. Started right up and runs fine.
I planned to drill a hole as you did. I'm glad you pointed out that it doesn't help. I think I'd leave that screw off when reassembling. That will save mucho steps next time and it's kind of a surplus screw
Don't give up on it. This kind of stuff happens with a lot a manufacturers. Mine has been working fine since I changed the carb. I have a feeling that the factory carb is really cheap or it was defective from factory. Just replace the carb and it should work fine.
Actually, there’s a much easier way. Break the snowblower into 2 parts (front section and motor section). It takes 4 bolts, 5 minutes, and the obstructions are completely removed.

Always use Sea Foam in your fuel. It works, most lawn company owners use it in all their machines. When filling up your snow blower gas can, always add Sea Foam before filling with gas. It cleans as well as makes the engines run better. It has been around forever. I use it in all my machines. I have two tractors I cut grass with in the summer, and never drain the gas from the carbs during storage. Never have a problem starting them in the summer. Snow blower the same way. Just make sure when you store your machine, you have a good amount in the tank and let it run for a bit before shutting it off for storage. Sea Foam keeps gas from going bad during the off season. Taking carbs off and cleaning them every other year is no fun. Sometimes it is easier just to replace the carb. Those little carbs don't cost much if you search on line, you can find them pretty cheap. Just my two cents. Always like to watch people get their machines running again. Great stuff!!

I remember when you would get a manual that shows the entire break down of the engine. Each part had a part number so you could write it down order the part,.or go to the nearest Briggs and Stratton or Tecumseh parts store at your hardware store. now they have to where you need to take it to a tech.

Just bought a Troybuilt 2410 which is the same as the craftsman and oddly enough the MTD. The guy who designed this thing had a bad pizza the day before. Carbs are pretty common issues on any gas combustion engine. They should be much easier to get to than all this rigmorole. I bought this from a friend, site unseen. Wish I had looked around. No problems yet but it is inevitable that this procedure is in my future.
Yeah they make them so they are not easy to fix and you have to buy a new one.I have a feeling these factory carbs they install in them are pretty crappy. After I changed mine it's been working fine.
I just did mine, simply removed the carb bowl which is accessed under all that housing crap and just above tire. Blocked the body up and removed the tire/wheel to get access. After removed the bowl then removed the main jet, cleaned it, sprayed carb cleaner up the emulsion tube hole, reinstalled everything and fired it up. 15 mins top.!
There is a plastic screw on top of your carb, remove it ! Under that there is a plastic jet! Remove that with a pair of needle nose! Clean it with a very fine wire, maybe a wire from a wire brush! 99% of the time that is the problem!
Thanks for saving me my buttons! I would've broke mine too. I have the same problem took the carb off cleaned it & it still wasn't working. Going to try 1 more time, maybe where the float was I missed something. Good video & thanks for posting!
Glad it helped. Thats why I do the videos. I also cleaned the heck out of the old carb and it still did not work. Save yourself some time buy a new one and put it on. I used to use the electric start all the time but this year it went on with one pull. Good luck, thanks for watching.
I ordered a $14 carb the same day I bought my cheap like new snowblower. Took out main jet and cleaned every tiny hole out. Still won't stay running. If I tear it down to get to the top of the carb I'm going to go ahead and switch it with the new one. If I tear it down clean everything and reassembly without changing the carb and it fails to run it's going to the dump. I'm unwilling to do it twice.
Never am I buying another Chinese made engine for this reason. I think you can remove the carb bowl to clean it or just drain it by tipping the machine back toward the handles. I have used Stabil in all my gas since I found a bowl half filled with gelled ethanol
I replaced my carburetor today on those threaded bolts that tighten down carburetor, are they supposed to remain in front housing or re installation when installation carburetor tighten
You put the carburetor on the threaded posts, then put the cover on and then you put on the nuts that hold the carb and the cover. So yes the nuts go outside the cover. I hope this answers you question.
Hi, I have a different problem. My Craftsman snow thrower choke is stuck - (how can I fix this problem.) I can't find any information on this issue any where. I was told to check the linkage.
Is it the choke itself on the carb? Or is it the linkage to the choke? Spray the carb first with carb cleaner and see if that helps. If not then take off the cover like I did in the video to see what it is. If it is the choke in the carb then clean or replace it. If it is the linkage then adjust it so it turns the choke open or closed. Hope this helps.
@@juliodavid49 Thanks for the quick reply. The choke button control is the same as yours in the video. The choke handle that you broke off. The snow thrower worked great the day before, however today the choke will not move. The choke dial is stuck past off(straight down) It wont start (presumably because of the choke position/ Should I pry the choke control button off and spray cleaner inside?
@@Jonathonn77 It sounds like the choke link that is attached to the dial is jammed up somehow. You might have to take off the dial (very carefully, look at the video) and take off the cover and see what is going on. I don't think that spraying it is going to do it but try it anyway. @@Jonathonn77 I just looked at my video and if you take off the top cover you can look down at the choke link and see if it is twisted or something that is not letting it move. Try that before pulling out the dial. Maybe you moved the dial past its point and it is stuck.
@@maryannegibler630 Look up the model # on Sears Parts Direct and then you should be able to download the owner's manual, which should have an exploded parts list. From there you can determine what bolts you need to remove. A 1997 Sears machine is likely made by Murray for Sears.
My snow thrower starts and stays on for about 5 mins then just quits. it'll start again but the problem just repeats. think cleaning the carb is worth a go?
That sounds like the choke is staying closed not allowing air to go in after it is on for a couple of minutes. If the choke stays closed you have no air to mix with the fuel. Clean the carb and see if that helps. Hope this helps.
@@juliodavid49 cleaned the carb. And adjusted the needle and seat spring and it seams to be working. Doesn’t shut off anymore just a little sputtering. I think it may be the choke. If I adjust as I go it seems to run smooth.

I WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND DISCOVERED THE ANSWER. SEARS PARTS DIRECT SENT ME THE WRONG GASKET. THIS VIDEO IS WORTH WATCHING CLOSELY IF YOU PLAN TO WORK ON THIS SNOW BLOWER. WHERE IS EVERYONE ELSE GETTING THESE CHEAP CARBS. SEARS NAILED ME FOR $77 JUST FOR THE CARB. THAT DIDN'T INCLUDE THE WRONG GASKET........TWN
Try changing the spark plug first. If that doesn't work it's probably the carb. You can try cleaning the carb, but I did that and wound up buying a new carb anyway. So for like 8 bucks you can get one on eBay and change it. Mine has been working fine since I changed it.
Ya, I have one of these pieces of crap. What a joke it is to have to do all that work to get at the carb. Tecumseh snow blower motors used to be the gold standard for simplicity and longevity.
I probably found the part number in my snowblower operating instructions and then did a search on eBay for that part. I don't know which snowblower you have but the one I bought for mine has three different numbers as follows. 951-14026A , 951-14027A and 951-10638A. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Well I figured it out but it was a pain. Apparently mine was a mtd engine and there is not a whole lot of information on what other carbs are interchangeable for my model. So for others on here if you have a craftsman 24 model number 247.889571 is interchangeable with the 951-10974A when searching eBay for the right carb. 👍🏻 Nice video btw man. Keep up the good work.
Great video, I’m currently trying to replace the Carburetor on my Troy-Bilt the design is almost identical to your craftsman. Pain in the butt. I actually have to disconnect the handle in order to remove the carb. So my question to you is this: do you know of any snowblowers with a service friendly design? Obviously Craftsman and Troy-Bill are out of the question
No. I don't think there is any such thing as service friendly. I think that manufacturers making this way so that we can't repair them too often and then buy a new one. But once you fix it it should be good for a couple of seasons or more. Mines been working fine since I replaced the carb.(knock on wood). Thanks for liking the video.
The Troy Bilt should be identical pretty much because Troy Bilt is owned by MTD and MTD made this snow blower for Sears (Any Craftsman product with a "247" model prefix is made by MTD).
It looks like the factory carbs were of poor quality. My snowblower works fine after I changed. You also have to remember to empty out the gas tank when you store it for the summer.
I tried that. I removed it, sprayed the crap out of it with carb cleaner and still did not work. I don't know what the carb jet and the emulsion tube are since I don't do this for a living. But ever since I changed that carb its been working great. There are times when you get a faulty carb from factory. Besides it didn't cost that much for the carb and I like doing repairs of all kinds. Maybe you should do a video explaining what the carb jet and the emulsion tube are. I'd like to see it and learn something.
Have the same snow blower and I believe a carburetor problem so going to take it apart and looking at bolts I said it can not be this stupidly designed that I have to take everything apart to get it off...after watching video I see that, yes, it is that stupidly designed.
Yes it is. After taking it apart the first time to clean the carb and then having to order a new carb, I figured I would do the video to show how poorly designed this thing is. But I gotta tell you after I changed it it has been working great so far.
In my case it was just a bad carburetor. It has been working fine since I changed it 6 years ago. I don't even have to use the electric starter, it turns on with a couple of pulls.
