Replacing Faulty Ford F350 Truck Ignition Lock Cylinder

Over the last year or so the ignition lock on our 1994 Ford F350 Truck has slowly begun to act up. Rather than turning smoothly it often sticks and requires a bit of jiggling so we can start the vehicle. Also annoying, many times even though the key is removed the "key left in ignition chime" sounds off. We have to reinsert the key and play around with it to get the chime off.
At first, I thought it must be a worn out key. However, all our keys do it even an almost brand new one. After a little googling I discovered the likely culprit is the lock cylinder. The internal tumblers and mechanical bits are wearing out. If not replaced soon we'll end up stranded somewhere.
Replacing Ignition Lock Cylinder 1994 F350
Thankfully a replacement ignition lock cylinder for our oldie but a goodie Ford truck wasn't hard to find and relatively inexpensive. After reading my vehicles repair manual, I was pleased to discover extensive disassembly of the steering column wasn't required. There is a small release pin that when depressed releases the whole cylinder to easily slide right out. The release pin is accessed through a small hole under the steering column using a thin screwdriver.
First, you disconnect the truck's batteries, next place the key in the run position and remove the old lock cylinder. The new lock cylinder comes ready to slide right in. That's it! The ignition is back operating like new. The only difference is I now have two keys. One to open the doors and another to start the car. There are also kits to swap all the locks out so you can have a single key, but for me, two keys aren't a big deal.

Ray you are my Hero!!! Thank you , Thank you. Thank you! I use to have a 2000 f-350 diesel, but after a lot of research I discovered the 1994 IDI turbo ( odd-ball year turbo) is the truck to have and much much cheaper to maintain/ parts... I have one similar to yours but green and love it more than the 2000 f-350 I sold. My key cylinder was doing the same thing...door chime and all...thank you again, I will replace it soon! Long live the square body Fords!

Yeah, the 1994 7.3 IDI turbo diesel was only made in the first 6 months of 94. After that Ford/Navistar came out with the 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel.

That is pretty nice that your truck is nearly a quarter century old and is running with so few problems. Good maintenance will win out over brand loyalty almost every time.

I try and keep on top of anything that goes wrong. Hurts to spend the money but almost alway worth it in the end and limits breakdowns on the road, a real hassle when towing. ;)

My 1990 f350 cylinder just now broke. For a while it was starting to stick I would need to turn it a little and then crank. Now it just spins and doesn't fire. Truck has less than 86k miles. I am really hoping that is the issue and I am not going to have to take apart the steering wheel to replace the switch.

That's a lot of weight (keys) hanging from your ignition, which can damage it. Maybe put all the excess keys in the glove box or hang somewhere convenient. I use a small carabiner hung on my belt loop. Another great video. Jon in Vancouver, BC

Love Your RV yeah there was a bunch of late 80s early 90s Ford's that had ignition switch problems that was causing the cars to catch on fire. I remember specifically a Thunderbird super Coupe that was local to us that burned while it's set in their carport. So I've always been really pretty cautious with all the Fords that I've owned in that era. Which have been quite a few. A couple of them actually were handled under the factory recall. 1989 5 liter Mustang sedan and also a 1992 tempo. After I posted the comment about your steering wheel I actually went out and looked at mine and compared it to your video and I guess mine does look just like yours LOL. Funny the camera made it look like it was bigger for some reason. One thing I miss with my 1995 F150 airbag steering wheel was that the horn buttons were right at my thumb tips as I drove which made it easy to get people to pay attention. LOL great video thanks for the reply👍😁

Here is a video where I took the dash apart to change out a faulty headlight switch - www.loveyourrv.com/repairing-our-ford-truck-headlight-switch/ It should get you access to behind the instrument covering to change the bulb if that's the problem unless there is an issue with your glow plug circuits, but if that was the case cold starting would be an issue, too.

@LoveYourRV

To get it out the easy way the key has to be in the ignition and there is a little pin to depress. If you can't do that I think you have to take the whole steering column part.

Did your replacement come with a cardboard sleeve around it and message to not turn before putting the cylinder in the steering column? I think some people may ignore the warning. If it gets turned before installing it can mess up the tumblers.

Need to track down what is draining the battery. If you get a clamp on amp meter you can see how much current is flowing from the battery wire and then pull fuses until it stops flowing, at least that will narrow down which circuit is the problem.

There is nothing to program. It's just a plain old school key. Last year for mechanical engine was a mid 94 7.3L IDI diesel. if it has a 7.3L Powerstroke it is computer controlled. the 5 speed manual trans, or C-6 automatic are non computer controlled. if it has an overdrive automatic trans, the trans is computer controlled.
