In this video I diagnose and replace the glow plugs on my 2010 Audi A3 8P 1.6TDI. This engine and variants of it are also used in other Volkswagen Group cars (Audi, VW, SEAT, Skoda). The number 3 glow plug was showing as open circuit with fault codes P0673 10160. I replace all four glow plugs taking precautions to avoid them breaking/snapping off in the cylinder head. I reset the fault codes to extinguish the check engine light/engine management light.
Components used were:
Beru/Borg Warner - Glow Plugs GE133 E2510031372
Febi Bilstein - Special Ceramic Grease

awesome work man! let us all remember when removing the glow plugs to follow the tear moment from supplier anduse the Nm-wrench too. This will spare potential damage and we stop in right moment. You had a buautiful scenario with all of them willing to cooperate :)

Great tutorial. How do you think putting ceramic grease on threads affects actual tightening torque of plugs? Do or don’t you recommend chasing threads with thread tap after plugs are removed?
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! The ceramic grease should not affect it, as when tightening it is the tapered section at the base of the glow plug that is the contact point which we are actually tightening against the cylinder head. It’s more about future proofing for next time. My original glow plugs came out well with no thread damage and I personally wouldn’t do anything that risks allowing matter to enter the engine once the glow plugs are out.

I like the magnet bar thing! Any chance you could do a video on “must have tools” like that? It’s what I’d do, but I’m not a camera sort of person, also want to see if I can steal some ideas😂Great series of videos on this car by the way, I rebuild salvage cars but I never get to work without refreshing myself on the model I’m working on just in case, and to save myself lots of time! Been a while on the 1.6tdi usually focus on performance cars but this one is for mum, she already loves it. Chose it because of how good on fuel they are, decent amount of power nice low tax and for me most things are relatively easy to work on with these engines! Also, they are lovely to drive in my opinion. Thanks again!

Nice job. I usually change the bad glow plug first. Make sure to get that one done at least. They can be a real pain if jammed in.

I’m no mechanic by far ,but would the spray not make it a-little brittle ? Great video ,thanks for doing it
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 5 месяцев назад
I don’t think the cooling was sufficient to render it brittle. The idea behind this is just for the glow plug to be cooler than the cylinder head to provide for contraction.

Very useful video; thank you. I seem to have issues with the glow plugs on my VW Golf 7, 2.0 TDI. Start-stop malfunction message within minutes and the orange spiral symbol blinking after exceeding 2.5k rpm (immediately losing power). Makes sense? Can a defect glow plug also cause an irregular running of the engine during normal operation?

I have exact same issue, did you get yours fixed, if so how much was it?

Good work ! One question does it make sense changing the glow plugs even though I don't have any error code, just for preventive maintenance ?
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 7 месяцев назад
Thank you. You could but if one breaks off you’d wish you’d left it alone! I only really got involved as one had failed.

@@autoknight747 yeah that's also my biggest fear. I just asked because I've read some people saying to change them periodically instead of waiting for it to fail after 150-200k km and then having to deal with stuck glow plugs in heavily carbon deposits.

Glow plugs, like spark plugs, are a servicable item, just they dont need changing as often. If you've got a higher mileage engine id recommend changing them soon @guilhermeg345

Great job. I was interested to see if anyone else had tried thermal shock to free off the glow plugs. I have to replace a set in my 144K milage Golf TDi and will do the same heating and soaking down for a week or so before atempting removal. I'll use a small chunk of pipe insulation foam on the end of the plug to inject the freeze spray and hold it whilst the thermal shock effect gets to work. 😃😃😎😎

Nice video very detailed with good explanation of your thought process.Some glowpug part numbers would have been a nice inclusion for CAYC engine. Looks like injector No 3 has been changed on your engine,were you involved or previouse owner? Ask me how l know !!! RAC breakdown whilst on holiday away from home £600.00 bill outragiouse . Cylinder No 1 went on my 56,000 mile 1.6 CAYC tdi 2010
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 10 месяцев назад
I’ve heard that injectors can be a costly issue but thankfully ok so far under my ownership, which is coming up for a year now. There is a massive file of invoices with it so I know it’s been cared for but not seen any paperwork on injectors…
@colin5064
@colin5064 10 месяцев назад
Well l maybe mistaken but on the video you posted,it just appeared that number three injector looked much cleaner and less corroded than number 1&2 number 4 injector was not clear to view.So this would surgest to me it had been changed, if it were much less corroded the visible top of the injector head under the elec connector. @@autoknight747

It has already had one, so it’s not due on mileage but it was a few years ago, so if I keep the car long term I will replace cambelt & water pump. Naturally there’ll be a video!
