DO NOT connect glow plugs directly to a battery.
I show how to do a simple resistance test using a cheap multimeter followed by a live, on-battery comparison test to show the difference between a defective and working glow plug.
This is a general test so for greater accuracy, find out your specific ohms value for your engine.
I test the Euro3 Volvo D5 glow plug which should be 0.685 ohms. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Using my Amazon links does not cost you any extra.

Excellent video. I knew one of my plugs was failing, but didn't know which one. Three showed a reading of 1 ohmn and the duff plug showed 304 ohmns. I replaced all 4 plugs anyway and no more warning lights on my dash. Thanks very much. This has taught me a few things about glow plug operation and testing.

Great vid, thumbs up and subbing. I have a 1.9 Vauxhall Vivaro glow plug light coming on while driving + limp mode, very low on power. I am looking at EGR maybe needing a clean, maybe the MAF sensor, but thought it would be a good idea to check the glow plugs while I have access. With your method I reckon I will save an hour of unnecessary labour, if all the plugs test ok. Thanks for sharing tips, and thumbs up from another Volvo fan.

If the plugs are still in the car you could use your multimeter in continuity resistance with one lead on the top and one on a common ground eg the cylinder head would show wether the glow plug is good without removing the plug you could also use a power probe by listening for the ground chime
@sirobb
@sirobb 4 года назад
If the glow plug internals are shorted to ground, you'll get the same reading and it will be wrong. A resistance test comparing actual against spec is more reliable.

On the 406 you can't get a regular socket on as their is no room for the ratchet to plug into it as the thread is too long. You also can't get in a long socket. So I found cutting the thread off the old plug will get on the standard socket to remove the plug. Then on the new plug cut off half the thread and you can get that in too with plenty left to screw on the cable nut.

Those ceramic glow plugs quickly get up to 1550C and then module control brings them down to 1100C; I would avoid too much time with an 11V battery source with the newest ceramic plugs according to Bosch. Regular metal tip or super metal tips g plugs are something like 750C temp also with intended 11V source. I think your vid is super. I have the 5 cylnder 2.7L. The old 180D plugs were the better shade tree fix. My father said he used to have a cylinder head glow bolt that one would remove; heat with an oil lap til hot and quickly install with gloves and start cranking. Plugs have come a long way.

Such a good demonstration. Just notice the fingers touches the metal part of glow plug wherein the test probes are connected. Technically our body might contribute inaccurate resistance measurement. Just an observation.

Thanks. I've tested hundreds of glow plugs either holding them in my hand as well as only touching them with the multimeter probes and body resistance makes no difference to the accuracy of this test.

You can leave the battery in place. As a precaution, just don't have the keys in the ignition and it should all be ok. Just take the usual care not to short anything when doing any electrical testing. 👍
@ttttonyyyy
@ttttonyyyy 9 лет назад
Glow plugs typically draw about 10A each so the very quick and easy way to check is stick a DC clamp meter over the glow plug feed cable and see if 4 plugs draw ~40A, 6 plugs ~60A etc. But even then I've seen plugs fail in a way you can't spot with this test or by metering for resistance, because they glow but up in the body of the plug and not the tip, so really pulling them and sticking them across a battery as shown in the video is the only 100% reliable way :)
@chas2can124

Great video. With 4 out of 5 plugs gone how did you start the Volvo D5 engine? Roll start every time?
@sirobb
@sirobb 9 лет назад
On a common rail diesel, the glow plugs are only really need for starting in very low temperatures so the car started ok but would run slightly lumpy for half a minute or so. Some engines use the glow plugs for dpf regenerations though so having them all fully functional is a good idea regardless. Luckily, as you can see, they're easy to test although some engine layouts mean they're awkward to reach.
@chas2can124
@chas2can124 8 лет назад
Thanks. Is it the same case for NON Common Rail diesels? I have one of them. Your thoughts?
@sirobb
@sirobb 8 лет назад
+Chas2Can Non common rail injectors work at much lower pressure so the fuel isn't atomised as much when injected. This means the role of the glow plug is more important for good starting.

@sirobb
@sirobb 9 лет назад
Yes you use penetrating oil the day before and on the day. It also helps if the engine is hot so be careful. You must also use a good fitting hexagonal deep socket and take your time. Don't try to turn it out in one go, so you loosen a little then tighten and repeat, each time loosening a little more and still use regular squirts of oil.
@kung316i
@kung316i 9 лет назад

When you are battery testing them it's much easier to use jumper cables (one lead of the around the body of glow plug to ground) then take the glowplug via the handle and touch the positive thermal of battery with top of glow plug. No chances of that Lil wire getting hot and burning your finger. 👍🏾

Hi, this is very usefull information for people, to spare themselves for canging glow plugs hen there is actually no need to do this as they are all fine. I had been testing my glow plugs like this for last 3 years before every winter to make sure they are all ok. On one of my cars they did not regiter any resistance on up to 200Ohms and they did not light up either when connected straight to the battery. New ones showed about 0.6ohms (NGK). Now, just today, i have new set of Denso glow plugs in my hands which show about 0,5ohms. Anyway, main idea is that, under 1ohm and they should work and they do when u apply voltage direct. But be careful with plugs that work on 7V(newer cars with ceramic glow plugs), 12.5V direct from car battery could kill them. Only question to the video owner/maker: about testing the second glow plug, did i saw tip of the wire lead used to test just flying around i.e it lost connection to battery or something before plug could even react - would of expect to see if any result after being connected about 10 sec rather than 3 or 4 u filmed this one.
@osoonikum1101
@osoonikum1101 9 лет назад
osoonikum Just to mention place where i live, we get every winter -25 degree C easy and usually see even down to -35 degree C for a week every year. -20 degree C is NORM so your diesel have to be in top condition, including glow plugs. If your diesel is in good shape(injection timing, battery, fuel system, starter etc) it should start down to -10 degree C without much hassle even if all 4 glow plugs are shot!

agree with all of this, all i would add is run then for 20 seconds off a battery, and see they stay lit as sometimes the internal winding in then can 'open' when it gets hot so they kind of light and then go out again. the resistance test is a bit hard for most people as they things can read so low its hard for a cheap meter, just power then up, check they glow withing 3 seonds and stay lit for more than 20, and slap em back in if good, although once you have them out, for the sake of what they cost, why not just stick new ones in, and NO CHEAP BRANDS! i bought cheap and lasted only 3 month....
@sirobb
@sirobb 8 лет назад
Thanks for taking the time to comment. The on battery "test" was really for illustration only and I wouldn't supply battery voltage for as long as 20 seconds because you could easily damage a perfectly working glow plug. Also not all glow plugs are 12v so once again you could damage them. The safest method is to carry out the resistance test with the plug still in the engine and do the test cold and after the plug has been subjected to heat and /or electrical load. This will show up a defective plug and a good plug will return correct figures regardless.
