---------------------------------
The headset on my Canyon Endurace CF 9.0 Di2 2017 model lasted only 8 weeks or 800 miles from getting the bike brand new. The weather has been wet but it is disappointing.
The headset on this bike and many Canyons is made by Acros and is the Ai70. The top bearing is cheap and has good availability for under £10, but the lower bearing is only available from the headset manufacturer, and is ridiculously expensive. I phoned around and the cheapest I could find the bearings, which are sold as a pair, was £60. No third parties currently make the lower bearing but hopefully that will change. I will provide a link in the description if I do find a cheaper alternative.
In this case Canyon did send me the replacement headset bearings free of charge.
To make it easier to get the handlebars out of the way, remove the brake cable from the brake caliper.
Then loosen the stem bolts, and remove the cap. Take the handlebars off and attach to the frame using the foam packers that come with the bike if you still have them.
Keep an eye on the forks - they may drop out once you remove the stem.
Holding the forks remove them from the head tube and put them to one side.
In my case both bearings are rough, but the top bearing is worse. Whilst waiting for the new bearings to arrive I did try regreasing the top bearing, first removing the seal with a sharp object, using degreaser to wash away the existing grease and then using my grease gun to force as much grease back in as I could. There was a small improvement but I would only recommend it if you do it before the bearing has gone.
If your bottom bearing is ok, I have found the the top bearing for only £6.50 - link in the description.
The integrated bearings are press fitted so need tapping out. I used a drift and a hammer, but a screw driver would also do the job.
The top bearing comes out with a few taps. But the bottom bearing is tougher to remove.
I found the easiest way to punch out the bottom bearing, was to support the headtube with my left hand, feeling with my finger on the same hand the drift against the inside edge of the bearing. And then lightly tapping with a hammer, moving the drift around the bearing until it comes out.
The bottom bearing has a 45 degree chamfer on the bottom inside edge, that sits against the forks. So take note of that when you replace it.
Give the headtube a good clean with some degreaser and paper towel.
Lightly grease the top and bottom bearings and the headtube. Push fit them evenly as far as you can. Remember that the bottom bearing has the chamfer on inside facing the forks.
I used a headset press to insert them fully but you could use a drift, making sure to apply force to both the inside and outside race of the bearing evenly.
I found it easiest to use the old bearings as drifts to insert the new bearings, but with the bottom bearing be careful since the bearing is recessed a few mm and you don’t want to get the old bearing stuck in there too. I just started it off with the old bearing and then switched to my headset press only to lightly finish off.
Smear some grease on the forks at the crown, and a little over the top bearing. I also gave the clamp assembly that adjusts the play in the headset a clean before reassembling. Make sure to loosen the torx screw before assembly.
Final assembly needs to be done off the back stand. Loosen the stem bolts again, and make sure the forks are fully seated.
Ensure everything is straight, and that the cap is inserted before tightening to 5Nm with a torque wrench if you have one. Then take out any play by tightening the torx screw on the clamp. Check for play by applying the front brake and feeling with your fingers between the top of the headtube and the Acros clamp - there shouldn’t be any movement as you push back and forth on the bike.

Yep! These Ball Bearing issues with my Canyon are the gift that keeps on giving. After replacing the bearings on my bottom bracket, I now have some Headset Bearing issues. At least the bottom bracket bearings were readily available. The top bearing has seized. Canyon does not have any headset bearings for the Grizle and no one in the US seems to have them either. They have a very specific angle on the top bearing that no other manufacturer seems to use. I now must order them from Germany and the shipping is almost as much as the bearings. I have owned very many bikes and none of them had this many bearing related issues.

Very late to the party but I've just checked my headset after yesterdays ride and bottom bearing is shot. Note forks were tricky to remove, I had to tap out with nylon hammer on steering tube and bottom bearing was stuck on crown race. When I levered(carefully) the bearing off it came apart. I was able to put back together so I can use bike until new bearing arrives. Note I was able to order just bottom bearing from Aire Velo and it cost £12.50 plus delivery so not too bad. Design though is crazy on Canyons, I looked at your other video for replacing Di2 battery in seat post. Absolutely ridiculous you need to remove bottom bracket to access!

Thanks for making the video. It was very helpful to see what you have done. I am busy stripping my Ultimate SLX 10 back to the frame after 4 years riding and probably getting on for 30,000 miles. I have various items that need to be replaced some of which were cables and outer's. As I had pretty much everything off the bike I thought that I would take the forks out and have a look at the bearings. The top bearing is pretty rough but the bottom one is as smooth as silk. I doubt if it would be any smoother if it was brand new. I was pretty impressed but it seems that I may have been lucky. About to order a top bearing only. Thanks again

Excellent video. I'm looking at the Endurace as my next bike but seeing your video and reading the comments below has me hesitating. I don't work on my own bikes as it is, but the failures of the bearings and difficulty of finding a replacement seems to me a problem especially as they are just entering the Canadian market this spring. Would I be able to get a fix easily in a year or two..three etc if I have a failure? Maybe it would be better to pay the price and buy a bike that is not purchased online and the local bike shops are familiar with?

Thank you! I think they've changed the design of the headset on more recent Endurace bikes. I can't say whether it's much better or not. If it's any consolation, my son's Scott Addict isn't much better! Probably not as bad as you in Canada - but the weather and road surface where I live in the UK is not great for road bikes!

Great video! I’m in the process of replacing the headset bearings in my Canyon Ultimate. When I’ve removed the forks, it looks like there is a large “collar” stuck on the forks with the bottom bearing nestled inside it. I assume the collar should be bonded to the inside of the frame? Any advice?

Hi, great video, very convenient because I own the exact same bike. My bearings started to get stiff and I bought the bearing set. Unfortunately, my fork don‘t slide like yours. I can‘t manage to get it out just with my hands. Now I have been hesitating for a few days and waiting for the WD40 to do its job but nothing happens. I‘m not sure if I could use more force. Do you have a clue for me? I’d have to wait months for an appointment in a garage here in Germany…All the best Marco

Hi glad it helped a bit. I'll often use a hammer with a nylon head. Or you could use a piece of wood to protect the top of the fork steerer. If you can release the split ring that will help.

I've had that several times - it's a bit of a nightmare! (Although it's probably worse when the outer race of the lower bearing gets left behind!) I've managed to get it a out with a screwdriver and a lot of patience. But the best option would be the right sized bearing puller - you could try www.ebay.co.uk/usr/bearingprotools?_trksid=p2047675.m3561.l2559 - he's very helpful and might have the right size.

Hi, if you were to cut down the steerer, would you cut it to lie completely flush with the top of the stem or cut it 2-3mm lower like with other standard headsets? Because of the design differences, is it necessary to have the top of the steerer lower when not using a compression plug? Thanks
@TheCyclingMan
@TheCyclingMan 6 лет назад
Hi - I would still cut it slightly lower in case you end up using a compression plug in the future (as I'm now doing!) But you're right, with the Acros headset design, it could sit flush.

The lower bearing interfaces with the crown race on the forks. The upper bearing is being "pulled" into the headtube.

Is it possible to move some of the spacers above the stem to lower the bars with that weird cap? Or is it required to cut the fork for lowering the stem?

Hi - I have a couple of Canyons, both using the AI-70. I am trying to communicate with Canyon regards swapping out the AI-70 for a more typical top-cap / bolt & expander. They will sell me something for £25. What I can't seem to get an answer on is what do I replace the "clamp" section of the existing head with - the two part bit that houses the little grub screw. It's about 25mm. They are saying buy spacers (which will look hideous!). You mention in a comment below that you are now using a compression plug (is that an expander bung?). Did you need to add an additional spacer, as Canyon tend to cut the folk flush to the top of the stem? As an aside, I have just ruined the plastic thread on my headset, so feeling a little cheesed off!
@TheCyclingMan
@TheCyclingMan 6 лет назад
I'll try and do a video on this - but yes just buy a compression plug. I got one from Canyon. You can use the existing headset. Don't worry about ruining the thread - you don't even need the grub screw. Just close the cam completely and assemble the headset.

Hi, is it necessary to unscrew the 'accros the clamp' device if I only change the stem. I saw that when unmounting the stem you slackened the stem screws first but when mounting back you firstly tightened the stem screws and then the accros clamp screw. If I replace only the stem would it be necessary to play with accros clamp screw? Thanks !
@TheCyclingMan
@TheCyclingMan 6 лет назад
If you replace the stem, loosen the Acros clamp and make sure it's completely closed. Then after replacing the stem, tighten the stem bolts. Then take out the play by tightening the Across clamp torx screw. There is a mark along the top section of the clamp, and three marks along the bottom section. Don't over tighten the set screw so the top mark goes past the third bottom mark - it's easy to strip the plastic thread.

I guess it's related to their fork design but I'm hoping a bearing manufacturer will start producing a cheaper lower bearing. And if you see the link above for the bearing, it implies it is the same bearing used for the Ultimate and Endurace bikes across most of the range.
