This video demos how to replace 2 of the 3 plastic mechanism parts that commonly fail on older La-z-boy electric recliners.
Drive Toggle replacement (the 3rd part) is not shown in this clip. When the plastic Drive Toggle fails, you should order the Drive Toggle Clevis replacement kit. It includes a metal part that replaces the plastic original.

Have you ever needed to replace the support assembly bar (black bar that is mounted across the back of the chair that the 2 cyclinders are mounted on)? One of welded mounts has failed/broken off and Lazyboy provided another one but the bar appears to be screwed in place (2 screws on each end) from the other side of the wood which is not accessible. This is pretty close to the chair I have. My problem is the actuator that controls the back is intermittently not functioning. I have determined that it is not an electrical issue, and has to do with the actuator itself. But what confuses me is that consistently, I can get it to start working again if I apply more pressure and cause it to strain harder. Any idea what my issue might be?
@reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 Год назад
@4xdblack - Unplug the unit & switch the connectors to both actuators to test. The connector that's powering the footrest actuator should be plugged into the actuator that controls back tilt and vica versa. Now when you plug the unit back in & push the button for the footrest, the back will tilt instead. If the SAME actuator is still working intermittently after the switch, the actuator is bad. If the OTHER actuator starts doing the same thing, it's an electrical issue. Could also be the control box, if your chair is equipped with one.

Hi! I switched these parts out, but the guide rod keeps “falling out” of the “guide”. There are holes that are empty at the end of the guide; I can’t find a schematic for what the name of the part is. @reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 10 месяцев назад
@sjdunn712 - It's possible that you didn't get the parts in their proper position during reassembly. Or, perhaps there's another problem. The chair shouldn't rock in the reclined position. That indicates that the Drive Toggle Connector is not properly engaged with the other parts. If you can, email photos of the issue to me at pete@reclinerrepairguy.com and I'll try to advise further.

Hello, I have what looks like the same mechanism on my power recliner. the foot rest goes up, but stops before it is all the way up. there is not restriction in the movement that last few inches, but, won't stay up all the way. I have turned the chair over and can't see anything that is out of place or broken. Thoughts?
@reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 Год назад
@Lauren Saar - I'm assuming that the footrest has opened further (higher) in the past. (Some modern recliner footrests do not open as far as others.) The actuator that controls the footrest may not be extending fully. That's one possibility. Have an experienced repair tech check the chair for other potential causes.

They're not hard to replace. Look closely at the old clips to see how they're installed. Remove 1 at a time & replace with a new clip installed the same way. Make sure you don't work on the mechanism when it's in a position where the scissors can close on your hands! If you're not confident you can do that, hire a repair tech.

Those plastic piece are meant to be easily replaceable. If they were all metal it could put too much stress on the actuators or more expensive motorized pieces. So a quick $30 repair could cost $400 requiring new actuators. So the plastic pieces are actually a pretty smart design and architectural feature.

@robgardner756 - La-z-boy parts are available from the manufacturer and some of their dealers. Note that many dealers no longer order parts for consumers. This results in a bottle-neck of part requests at the manufacturer, often resulting in long wait times on the phone or via email.

My drive rod on my recliner is backing out. How can I fix that?
@reclinerrepairguy4155
@reclinerrepairguy4155 Год назад
@Lisa Jensen Jones - There are clips and/or fasteners that hold the Drive Rod in place. For the rod to start coming out of the chair, there would have to be mechanism damage that is quite obvious. However, if the chair is still working fine & it just looks like the rod may be backing out, that may be due to a "caved-in" outside arm panel. This can give the appearance of a mechanical problem when there is none.
