Turn of hot and cold water to faucet
Getting the replacment cartridge seated took me 3 or 4 tries. Once cartridge is seated, the red or blue extension should stop turning after quarter turn in either direction.

This is an EXCELLENT How-To video. This is the ONLY video you will need to replace the Moen Faucet Cartridge. Put downward pressure on the Moen Tool when beginning to loosen the retaining ring so you do not strip the notches. As MON points our fitting the cartridge tab (notch) into the brass tube is a bit tricky. Thank you !!!

Great video. For anyone out there needed to replace one, I recommend replacing both while you're at it. If you don't, you'll end up doing it sooner or later anyway and you'll have to relearn the procedure all over again.

Thank you for this excellent video! So often RU-vid videos don't show the sticking points in a job and don't offer the tricks to overcome them. You shoe them all. Seeing someone make a mistake or have difficulty with something and solve them is golden. The only other problem I had, and you didn't, was getting the faucet handle trim to unscrew because of some lime deposits. I had to loosen the faucet nut below the countertop a little bit to release the trim and retighten the nut in order to avoid damaging the trim. Great video!

Thanks for nice comment. Funny you mentioned having difficulty removing the faucet handle. I had the same problem at another sink. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1izCXI6Mctw.html

The screw/crowbar/2x4 trick was a lifesaver!!! I used the nail-remover end of a hammer since I don't have a crowbar, and it worked great.

Phenomenal way to remove the cartridge. I am struggling to remove a faulty one. Update: I succeeded in removing the cartridge using the method shown in this video. Before I saw this video I had managed to punch my left eye extremely hard when the needle nose pliers lost grip on the cartridge. Here are the instruments I used: 1. Everbilt 10-24 TPI 3-1/2 in machine screws (gently thread the screw all the way - till you face no resistance) 2. Harbor Freight PITTSBURGH 15 in. Long Reach Locking Pliers 3. Husky screwdriver handle as the the fulcrum

Recently, I could not remove the plastic retainer ring with corrosion and calcium buildup. The plastic retainer ring got shredded in the process of trying to loosen the ring. Because Moen has record that I am the original owner of the faucet, the sent me a new valve body which includes new cartridge and retainer ring. Yours maybe different. www.amazon.com/Moen-100743-Replacement-Part/dp/B000CNGZWC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3JGZHWBQHBBMJ&keywords=moen+100743&qid=1704948932&s=hi&sprefix=moen+100743%2Ctools%2C142&sr=1-1

Thank you! This cartridge has been a pain in the butt since July, starting with the cartridge nut being firmly stuck. Then after having removed the cartridge nut by breaking it into bits (yes, we had a replacement from Moen) the damn cartridge wouldn't budge! Your video saved the day! Moen is a great product (guaranteed for life) but I have to say that our particular faucet is very poorly designed.

Yes, I had one that was stuck in rather firmly. Pliers and channel locks no good. I tried to wedge a screw driver and putty knife. I pounded it with a chisel. I bought the removal tool from hardware store. I finally wanted to try one more thing first. I sprayed it with a 50/50 water/vinegar solution. Let it soak 20-30 minutes. Put the screw back in and used the claw on hammer supported by two 2 x 4's to get some leverage on it. It finally came out!!!

when I tried to pull the cartridge out the bottom part broke apart. The lower O ring area had a lot of calcium crusties holding the lower O ring and bottom piece in place. After some side to side prying it came out using needle nose pliers. I put extra plumbers grease on the replacement. A short bit of panic there.

Good job. I too noticed some calcium at the lower O-ring on my project. There is always a little bit of learning with DIY. Next time you will be faster and more confident. My attitude is I will try it myself then call a plumber if needed.

If the faucet is leaking, the quarter turns may need to be replaced. you can check this by turning off water to the faucet, if drip continues then quarter turns are bad

I had read somewhere that the Moen 1224 replacement cartridges are water saving (1.5 gallons of water per minute). Its a possibility your old cartridge was not water saving cartridge.

The red or blue piece on mine doesn’t have a screw just looks like a shield of plastics that maybe a screw underneath it. Anyone have that version? I’m afraid to use too much force to just pull it out. Dang I dont think this makes sense … hopefully someone gets it

I had a leaky faucet and replaced it similar to this however now when I turn the faucet on or off, I can keep turning if I push hard enough. Not sure what I can tighten to make it not do this. Any thoughts on how I can solve that?

My only guess is that the new cartridge is not fully seated. If you look at your old or new cartridge, you will notice a square tab on both side of cartridge that needs to fall into a match cutout. It took me 3-4 tries before mine into place. It doesn't just fall in.

Hello. I am not a plumber so I don't have a specific answer. Only thing I can say is make sure the cartridge is fully seated and the black O-rings are not damaged.

@@masterofnone7243 Thanks for the answer The reason why it was leaking was because I tried to fix the side where the cold water was, I tried the other side and it was fixed So if it still leaking try the other side but your video was awesome thank you.

Disclaimer I am not a plumber. I am in the medical field. Maybe try turning off the water on one side to isolate what cartridge is giving you the problem. Its a possibility that one cartridge is not installed properly. Also I am assuming that your old cartridge matched the new cartridge you installed.

I had trouble getting the small notch into the space. I used a red marker and placed a small dot on the blue extension and a dot on the brass fitting. I was then able to get it to seat into the notch within seconds. Prior to making the marks, I spent 5-10 minutes trying to seat the cartridge.
