Hi guys! And we are back - this time with the greasiest driveshafts I have ever seen!! This wasn't actually a difficult job, if I could have remembered which sides needed to be unbolted :-)
Hope that you find it mildly entertaining anyway, please drop me a like, subscribe and comment and see you all soon!

Good video as always. Bit concerned about no sign of using a torque wrench though. If people are going to use your videos as guides be sure to include this kinda stuff as it is important to torque things correctly. Especially when it comes to wheels and hubs etc. Keep up the great content! 😎👍🏻

When smashing off wishbones off smack the part closest to the bottom ball joint and it comes off so much easier

I feel like with the CV Axles out you have a lot of space to take off the oil filter housing. Probably easier to do those at the same time.
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 4 года назад
Yes this might make it easier :) worth considering changing the oil sensor aswell whilst it's all out as that's easier to get to whilst you have it all out :) Miriam xx

He gives you such a hard time, what a jerk!!! Lol I love you guys so much. I’ve learned a ton about the mini. I’ve been thinking about getting a Mercedes c230 ( that’s what it’s called in Canada not sure about other countries) or a Smart Fortwo. But you have me excited to buy a Mini. Thank you.

Get a mini!! They are so much fun, pretty easy to work and learn on and you can do so much with them if you are into modifying! Whilst they won't be the fastest car about for smiles per miles there not alot out there that can match them! Thanks so much for watching, Miriam xx

Next time just undo the two bolts holding the ball joint to the lower arm . small tap with the old hammer and there off ...no need for the ball joint tool.
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 4 года назад
Good tip this! Need to replace the ball joints on this as well as I assume they are the factory ones so will be well worn by now. Thanks for this and thanks for watching! Miriam xx

This is a good tip for anyone outside the UK or has relatively new outer ball joints. For anyone in the UK with old ball joints - you have no chance doing it this way as the ball joint rusts itself to the hub carrier :(
@bamak1n
@bamak1n 4 года назад
@@JohnCarlyle yep, mine was rusted to the carrier, needed the removal tool and also tw@tting it with hammer, then using a chisel either side, working way in and eventually dropping out the ball joint

It would be wise to buy some impact driver sockets, the normal sockets can shatter when used on an impact driver, better safe than sorry ;)

@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 3 года назад
Yea you will lose a little bit so will need topping up :) if nothing comes out it probably a good time to drop what's in there and refresh it all :) hope this helps! Miriam xx

I need to replace both inner cv boots would it be easier to replace them or buy new shafts Thanks andy
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage Год назад
The draveshafts are quite expensive for the r53... Replacing the cv boots takes around 1 hour per side if you handy with a spanners :) It's a bit messy but not too bad! I would change the boots :) Thanks for watching! Miriam xx

Ok will order some boots and change them , any recommendations for boots and would it be best to drop gearbox oil at same time ? Thanks and keep up the good vids
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage Год назад
You will lose a little fluid but nothing major will only need a little to top it up :) that being said if you don't know when the fluid was last changed and you have the means to put it back in it could be prudent to change the oil :) worth considering changing the driveshaft seals for good measure :) All the best, Miriam xx

Just trying to do this myself on passenger side. That driveshaft is not coming out. Any ideas tried various pry bars but no luck. It needs a real jolt. I see you used a type of ball joint breaker to get behind. What one did you use or any idea whether taking the other driveshaft off as well and tapping through could work?

Ive replaced my engine and ive lost the three bolts that hold the carrier bearing bracket to the engine. I can not find the sizes of these bolts. Could you possibly tell me the sizes needed? Ty...just found your channel. Subbed.
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 3 года назад
Hi Jeremy, no problems at all! The bolt is a 13mm Hex-Head Bolt Screw M8x1.25x30mm Grade 8.8 the BMW part number is: 07119905532 should you wish to get it from them, note the bolt also has a washer :) I hope this helps, Miriam xx

hi, thanks for the vids! just wondering about the carrier bracket that is attached to the old drive shaft, how did you remove that and put it on new one? is it easy to do? i have mine here to fit lol
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 4 года назад
Hi Olly, the shafts we used come with the bracket already installed so I have not actually removed one :( However, the theory is, there will be a circlip that you remove and then knock the bracket off gently with a hammer :) it should then slide right off the end :) hope this helps, should be clear once you get it off, but you will need some circlip pliers to complete the job. Hope this helps and thanks for watching, Miriam xx
@bamak1n
@bamak1n 4 года назад
@@ModAMiniGarage thanks so much Miriam for the reply! I have got myself a set of circlip pliers, so i will swap the bracket like you said. I am in similar position to yourself in the oil seals video, i have oil splattered everywhere, so next i will be following that video to change the various gaskets and seals, once i have done this drive shaft, ball joint, hub, disc and pads, expansion tank (hopefully fix the coolant leak lol) Thanks again, Olly :)))
@ModAMiniGarage
@ModAMiniGarage 4 года назад
Sounds like a fun little project :) these cars are leaky in general so can be hard to pin point the exact leak location doing so of them isn't horrendous :) let us know how you get on, Miriam xx

@@ModAMiniGarage thank you! Did you have any problems with the LH driveshaft you installed? Mine backed out after a week, which im sure was seated properly, some people have had same issue with aftermarket ones, i have just fitted another brand and also new inner ball joint, even though other one seemed not too bad, see how that goes lol. Ps im running standard suspension. I replaced most oil seals, still some to go, new coolant hoses, new oil cooler, new hubs and drive shafts, new ball joints, new oils and filters, im having fun! Thanks for the vids for really useful guidance, Olly :)))
@ModAMiniGarage

@@bamak1n No not had anything like that... but the first time we fitted the passenger driveshaft we hadn't quite rammed it home so the car wouldn't move, couple of taps with a hammer and it was perfect. I could see this happening though and allowing the car to move but it not be seated properly and pop out... Its a shame the genuine mini shafts are so expensive! Miriam xx

Will do - the carrier bracket lines up and have put the bolts in but not fully tightened them but on the transmission end it’s not fully flush, I’ve not hit anything with a hammer yet, lol!!

@ModAMiniGarage 4 года назад
If you do hit it with a hammer (I always tap with a hammer) but be gentle and make sure the nut is back in the end! If the bolts in the bearing align you should be ok :) Miriam xx
