thanks for posting, my oversize wheel and vancafe spare tire carrier pushed the tire up into my linkage, I could not find any of my gears, so I bent something or pushed something out of alignment, -- I see the spline joint so I can take it apart to work on it and also the "box". I had great shifting, then really unuable Janky shifting...hope to get it fixed today, May 2024.
GoWesty doesn’t currently have the new shifter selector socket so I cleaned up the old one - hoping it’s fine for another 37 years :). Nice hack with the vise.
Just wanna say thanks so much for this video. It is super informative and you properly show each and everything that is being removed as well as telling the nut and bolt sizes. I plan on doing this on my own vanagon here soon. Very nice job with the video. Most people will do a video and completely skip how they took certain vital pieces off. Just want to say I really appreciate this
I know I wrote 7 months ago that I was doing it this weekend, but life for in the way. Did the removal today and was SO grateful for your video. Everything cleaned up so well and tomorrow putting it back together. THANK YOU!
Good job, am busy with mine now, very few of the parts available here especially the ball boot. you missed new boots between the new the gowesty selector lever and the new bush.
I love this video and my 1985 VW Vanagan Camper has the same issue and I need to order all the parts. I have ordered from GoWesty before but I have tried many ways to identify the shifting linkage kit or whatever it is called. Can anyone help identify the parts I need to order? I would like to get it ASAP. Thanks Carl
At 10:35 you say you 'just slid the front rod back in'. For the life of me I can't see anyway to do this. It's too long to clear the front of the van which would give the read end of the bar a low enough angle to slide through back and over the gas tank... Totally frustrated, and so curious how you just slid yours in.
I didn't come back to comment after I found the simple way - slide it in from the middle of the van towards the front while laying under the van. Dang... that took me WAY too long to figure out :)
Hey Flossy, at 3:06 you break the spline out and gasp "oh my gosh, finally!"... I'm at that stage right now and feeling the same way! What technique did you use to break it free? It looks like the end is all bent outta shape
@@flossymissiles Got it finally! Here's what I did. I took out the plastic elbow and disconnected the rear shaft. Then, I held the front shaft and hammered the other part backwards until bit fell off.
From the back of the van I held the shifting rod toward the front and hammer out the joint towards the back. Was pretty easy - oh yeah, and some WD in there.
I have an 86. I did not remove the tank. Had that question myself but once you are under there you will see. I did remove the spare tire carrier to make it easier to see in the shift box.
@@jeepercreepers54 at about 9:00 you can see the bushing on the crossmember behind the gas tank. Flossy has his tank removed but you shouldn't have to.
