Hello Friends! From one homesteader to another I have a simple hack that will protect your flock from above! We are located in the mountains of NC and have a large predator bird population. An old timer gave us the advice and to this day not one bird will attempt to attack our flock, yet we see them quite often on the outskirts. You’re a fisherman and I noticed your fence line. At the top of every wood pole, string you a thick fishing line from one pole to the other only at the top and “quilt your line in a crisscross pattern. The predatory birds will not attempt to enter something they think they can’t get out of. It’s been amazing for us and will further protect your flock. Believe it or not, they see the line yet as in fish they can’t understand the pattern so they decide to not enter. Hope it helps! We’ve been growing in buckets ever since we saw the hack! Thanks for that idea as we’ve been doing well with growing since! So, we help each other as it’s supposed to be!

You may like the “overEZ Chicken feeder” for when they’re bigger. It’s about $80 but it holds 50lbs of feed & has 3 eating holes. I just love mine & it saves me a ton of work not having to dump feed in a container frequently. You might need 2 of them to make it worth the purchase with having so many birds. Also BO WASTED FOOD! I just love your show & how very detailed & organized you are. Beautiful place you’ve made in your dream retirement home & property. God bless you!

I just LOVE your progression videos! Absolutely LOVE them. It is unfortunate that we lose some due to prey. Our roosters keep busy running off other birds of prey. It's almost comical when they do their job. It's heartbreaking when they can't save the chickens. We lock our chickens in at night but worry and run when we hear them scrapping during the day when they're free ranging.

We pressure cook tough birds with some water. Makes a tender meat and lovely broth. We love our wyandottes. We started with gold laced and now have both gold and silver laces wyandottes. Other than being dual purpose birds, they seem to have great personalities. Our rooster is also a gold lace wyandotte. He is large and beautiful and gentle. He has never attacked any human or hen; not even the grand children 2 yrs to 10 yrs old. We also have reds who are gentle. The easter eggers have been hit or miss with mean/nice and especially the marans not so nice. Just our experience with chickens so far. They are definitely cute! My grandparents (PennDutch 400 acre dairy farm) always had only white leghorns. So many memories...

I was raised on a farm and when mom wanted to cook chicken she’d walk out to the barn and come back with a hen to cook. I had chickens for about 10 years but a mink got in and killed them all. Hollis, just thought of something ... If you and Nancy are interested in some good, delicious meat (and good layers) chickens ... google the French Bresse chickens. These were brought to America in the 1800s and had to be named the American Bresse due to trademark/patents. Many homesteaders in this the US are learning and beginning to raise this breed. Good luck and all the best to you and Nancy. Like following and learning from you all. God Bless.

Last year I didn't get any new ones but this year I plan on getting Rid of about four or five and then replacing them. And then in a couple years, I'll do it again. I like having chickens of different ages.

Hollis and Nancy, it's a hard choice between what I like best on your channel, gardening, or raising chickens? I think the slightly tips toward raising chickens 😊.
