For the benefit of other viewers, the reason he was hammering the alternator forward to release belt tension is because there is another bolt (14mm) at the bottom of the alternator that needs to be loosened also. With that bolt loose, you can move the alternator by hand.
@rocdnb
@rocdnb 3 года назад
I tried to get my socket wrench and a bunch of other things down to loosen the other bolt you're talking about, but none of them would fit in the tiny space. Hammering the alternator back to loosen the belt was the only way I could do it. Marking the position was a great idea.

Thanks for the video! I just changed the belt on my 2007 Yaris batchback after 1st watching your video. Now I can blast the AC at idle without the engine bay howling like a banshee!

Thanks for the video! Your BEST TIP was to mark the location of your alternator so you could get it back to the same spot after changing the belt!! I changed out my belt today on my 06 Yaris and it took about 20 minutes. I loosened the top bolt and the alternator still wouldn't budge, so I had to get at the pivot bolt underneath although it was really tight. A good ratchet set will do the trick, better than a wrench IMO.. the bigger the ratchet, the more leverage you'll have. I would recommend this over hitting the alternator with a mallet and block, as the alternator moved freely after the pivot bolt was loosened. There isn't much clearance.. I'm a small chick though with little hands and arms, haha, so it was likely easier for me but still a pain in the ass. After that, taking the belt off and putting the new one on was a cinch. The only other problem I had was getting the alternator to sit at the same spot as before; I had to get one of the guys at the shop to leverage it back into place with a crowbar while I ratcheted the top bolt in tight. Not sure if this is normal for anyone else but it's what I had to do to make sure my tension was correct. Everything runs great now!

I watched a few of these videos, another one wants you to loosen a 14mm bolt too. I tried your way and only loosened the 12mm on the alternator and taped the alternator back with a small hammer and pry bar. It worked just fine on my 2008. The whole process took 10 minutes. The hardest part I had was that the new belt was distorted from being folded up in the cardboard holder and this made installing it a tiny bit tricky. I spent extra and purchased a $15.00 Gates belt "Mirco-V AT K040465 or 4PK1181 9/16" x 47" OC (14mm x 1195mm OC) at O'Reily's

Thank you for the video instructions. Smart move to mark the position of the alternator tensioning bolt before you removed it.

1. Belt grooves should always match pulley grooves. 2. always check belt length on the existing belt with the belt you bought. #'s represent length and width in mm. 3. You should never have to use any type of bar to release tension on your belt! There should be an adjusting bolt as well as mounting bolts for your alternator.... 4. Your "tensioner" tool is actually a tool you use to mount tires on rims, for your dirtbike or bicycle. This tool can also break the bead LOL 5. Generally speaking, you should only be able to twist the belt, 90 degrees max, at the belts longest distance from pulley to pulley

did you only loosen that one bolt in the bracket? I thought there was one lower down called the pivot bolt that is supposed to be loosened.

The pivot bolt is 9/16 and if you loosen it you can easily tension the belt by hand, rather than using a crowbar like the guy in the video did.

If youre not a mechanic, quit teaching people stuff you dont know. Theres 2 bolts buddy, if you have to hammer something thats suposed to move easily, chances are youre doing it wrong. Pompous ass

Thanks for this video, I'm going to try this in the spring, Toyota wanted over 130$ for this job and considering the belt is about 30- 40 and you managed to complete this job in about 10 min It's a great savings.

Thank you for sharing the video. There's a 12mm nut on top of the alternator and a 14mm nut that pivots the alternator at the bottom. Your video helped me saved some time and money. Much appreciated.

Thanks! great video. I tried yesterday but the alternator wouldn't budge and being all out of my medication, I kind of went bezerk with a sledgehammer, felt good on the moment but I noticed that a lot of little things broke off or came loose, and all sorts of fluids were accumulating under the car. So I started it in order to back it up and it's at that point I first saw flames, I didn't outright panic when it was evident that the garage was on fire but when the house became engulfed in a raging inferno I must admit that I lost it. Thank god I was working in my neighbor's garage! or I would have had a real bad day. Now that I encountered all this problems I can see it was a good idea to get some practice on someone else car, I wish my alternator is more cooperative, but if it is stuck too what to do?
@donniehawthorne7951
@donniehawthorne7951 9 лет назад
Anybodanybody that does this just remember that there is a bracket bolt at the bottom of the alternator that will make it easier to release the tension. You won't have to use a hammer to move the alternator back if you do this.

Question:Have you had any problems with squeaking since replacing the belt. I have had this belt replaced 3 times .. One forum mentioned that the serpentine belt has to be the upgraded version for no squeaking to occur. part number 90916-02500, anybody figure this one out ?

This is most likely due to warn bearings in one of your Pulleys or tensioners or the belt is loose and not tight enough.
@JohnnyBlaze6954

Try applying a thin coat of bar soap to the underside of your belt

Anyone who hasnt done this, a belt like this is very easy to install on this car, assuming there aren't any other big problems. My 08 without ac only has three pulleys, alternator, water pump and tensioner. Takes a few minutes to install. You need to be careful with these though, after you run it for a while, adjust the alternator, as it can get loose because of the shape of the belt in packaging, and manual tensioner

Have you ever changed the alternator on this car? The reason I am asking is I am trying to remove the bottom bolt but it doesn't have any clearance room to fully be removed. I was wondering if you knew any techniques on getting the bolt out?

We were able to do everything up to the point of putting the alternator back in place and if wont budge back ... what should we do ?
@vegasromaniac
@vegasromaniac 7 лет назад
Robert Livingston there is a bolt you can loosen up at the bottom of the alternator, it will move easy after that, than don't forget to get it tight
@claudiaking6855
@claudiaking6855 7 лет назад
Ok we were able to finally loosen the bottom bolt, but we got tip from another website that will help other ppl who were in a pickle like us... Using a lighter, LIGHT UP THE BOLT for about 30-60 seconds which will help loosen the bolt, after we light up the bolt for about 1 min with a lot of strength the bolt FINALLY came loose and we were able to move the Alternator BETTER. please note we were not able to put the Alternator in its orignal place (it was in the middle) it was a little bit before the middle, but I started up my car and it sounds BEAUTIFUL no more squeaking sounds at all. SO OUR NEW QUESTION IS, will my car run into trouble with the Alternator not being in its exact position, it is a little off the middle?? :o/

Dude, if the belt has a different number of grooves, the engine isn't the same, the diagram is wrong, you have a completely extra pulley, and you "dont have this part".... You probably have the wrong belt.
