May I suggest cheap brake clean in an aerosol can. It gets in where a cue tip can't and leaves nothing behind (a cue tip can leave cotton in a piston seal) and as the name implies.. its made for this task. Be wary pushing the pistons into the caliper, you can damage the lever reservoir with too much fluid that has nowhere to go (especially if you topped up or changed the brake fluid while the pads were worn. OR, you can push the other one completely out as the opposing piston shares the pressure... put pressure on one and it puts it on the other equally. As a caliper has the this same pressure on both pistons it will not necessarily align itself (You can see this for yourself by putting on the brake and you can shift an unbolted caliper left & right and it will not return to the middle.) Put a little (note LITTLE) antiseize on the bolts that hold the caliper onto the mount, and the bolts that hold the mount onto the staunchness. Steel into alloy often gets locked with corrosion and you can damage the bolts/forks if they get stuck next time you want to remove them. I'm no expert.. but after 45 years of being allowed to use dads workshop from about 7yo "This is MY garage.... Try not to break things"... and 13yrs as a maintenance engineer on things like steam pressure washers etc... I try and make sure I don't have to do something again... and if I do, it will be easier next time.

Me too. I'm a novice at bike maintenance, and videos as clear and simple as this one really help me. Nice and straightforward - most other videos suggest removing the rear wheel to change the pads, but it is so much easier to just remove the caliper. I did my first pad change perfectly, in about 10 minutes, following your clear instructions. Brilliant, thank you!

When you spread the pads, do it to the old pads before you remove them. No need to deface your new pads. Go ahead, use a large flat screwdriver, twist and pry, no harm done. Only open them far enough for the new pads to fit over the disc, no need to stress the caliper seals. Same for autos, I been playing this game many years, basics remain the same.

Great video! Over a year old and I just used it to change the brake pads on my electric bike. My neighbor paid $120 to get his brake pads changed at the local bicycle shop. Can you believe that for 10 minutes worth of work? Thanks for the info and the help have a great day.

It's called Feedback Sports Scorpion Bike Stand => www.amazon.com/Scorpion-Stand-2-Piece-Black/dp/B075FXB6F7/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=mtb+stand+feedback&qid=1625851128&sr=8-2 I felt it was kind of expensive BUT I use this thing for everything, maintenance tasks, washing the bike, lubing the chain, etc. So it gets used a ton. Plus it's nice to store the bike standing instead of leaning on something with the potential to fall over.

tks for the video. So now I am wondering if my Shimano hydralic caiiper has a stuck piston. Does it have two that move or one on this model ( you may know). BR-M365. I know on some calipers that one side moves only.

You're welcome! So, to my understanding, both pistons should move freely to close on the brake rotor evenly. If only one moves, you'll notice the rotor bends to one side and that's not good. If you hold in the piston that is freely moving, the fluid should push the stuck piston out. If it doesn't, you may have a seized piston.

Thanks for the update and response. I did remove the caliper and appears to have one seized up (in the caliper). I didnot remove the front caliper to compare pistons but with new brakes installed on the rear - it is still not feeling like it should. I will have to ride the bike and apply the brakes under forces to see if I see the rotor bends. It didnot bend on the stand when I looked at it. Meanwhile its working but not getting that hard lockup braking power (I have a replacement caliper in the mail but wont be here till late next week). I will let you know what I find. I do believe on my other bike with a mechanical caliper it only has one piston that moves and the other side of that caliper appears to be adjustable to move in or out. Gonna have to dig into that project also. Again thanks for the video info. Never tackled a caliper this far but I will take it all apart now when I put the new one in.@@FirstTimersCycling

@@arthurleal2674 If there is no bite in the feel, there might be air in the hydraulic line. It'll feel spongy, like you're pressing on the lever hard but there is no hard stop feel (springy). Good luck with your find and on this project! If you've never bled a brake line before whether it be on a motorcycle or a car, I'd take this task to a local bike shop you trust so you don't end up wasting brake fluid.

I have bled from the caliper (just like you would bleed car brakes) but I think a stuck piston only give me 50% braking power. I will see when I put the new caliper in and so far I have not seen any leaks outside the line. Actually I rode the bike today and forgot to look and check if the rotor would bend on braking. Did a quick 5 miles ride. I will be at it tomorow again. I will keep you posted. (just glad I decided to buy the large sized fluid instead of one little bottle). Maybe that handle/reservior could also be letting air into the system. This bike is like a 2016 model so seals could be wearing out too. @@FirstTimersCycling

@@arthurleal2674Yup, sounds like you are mechanically savvy to get to the bottom of this! You wouldn't have to be riding to see the rotor bending. You can be at a stand still, pull the lever and see if the rotor bends to one side. The symptoms you are describing definitely sounds like air in the system or of a seized piston. You're right, it is a possibility that air might be in the system but like I said before, you should feel sponginess at the lever.

I'm sure it's recommended to bleed the hydraulic fluid to keep things fresh but for me, I'd probably only do it if the brakes felt spongy or the brake feel wasn't consistent. For example if you pull the lever and it felt hard but you're not really slowing down.

I wouldn't advise using WD40 as a cleaner. Use specific brake cleaners or alcohol to clean brake components, or else you'll risk contaminating the surfaces.

You don't "have" to clean the pistons but it's recommended as part of the maintenance procedure. Dirt and grime get caked on the pistons and can hinder braking long term. That or you'll start to notice uneven pad wear from the pistons, not pushing equally.

@@FirstTimersCycling I'm not intending to skimp on it long term. Soon will be my first pad change. BtW, mine are cable all the way, not hydro. Still wondering if that makes a difference. I'm about to order some tools incl. measuring caliper to determine measurements before I order new pads. The user manual for my ebike doesn't tell me anything about the brakes other than type : "mechanical". Just want to be better educated while I balance a short budget that doesn't cover everything I need for work vs vehicle maintenance.

@@uncrunch398 What I would do in that case is examine the brake caliper visually. There should be some serial number or brand name on it so you can google. Got a make/model of your ebike? Maybe I can search it up for you when I get the chance. To answer your concern, even mechanical brakes need maintenance as it's a moving part and will undergo wear and tear. But, mechanical brake systems tend to be on the more inexpensive side, it may not be necessary to do to much for maintenance aside from changing the pads. If anything fails, it's pretty cheap to replace. Cable brakes would only suffer from what's called "cable-stretch" and a feeling of "brake-fade", which happens when you are on the brakes hard for a long period of time. Hydraulic brakes takes the win here especially for the weight that ebikes tend to be. If budget is a concern, just work with what you have and only change what needs to be changed. That's my 2cents. Hope that helps!

@@FirstTimersCycling Could find no information on the brakes other than brand. Shimano. Pads and springs have no words or numbers. They match the shape of B01S. If there's only one size in this shape, then I know what to buy. Except I need to check the rotor for markings to use only resin pads. I hope it's not there, I want the longest lasting. Probably a mix of ceramic and metallic for the longest lasting that I can't hear; according to some reviews. BTW, the bike is 45lbs, notably lighter than low end pedal only bicycles of same size. I carry and pull loads with it though. Thanks for the help.

@@uncrunch398 For entry level brake systems by Shimano, I'd say they would use the B01S pads. Do your calipers look like this? www.ebay.com/itm/195520840123 the BR-M375-L On my ebike I switched to metallic as I was overheating the brakes on downhills with the added weight of the Bafang motor + battery. The only time I had a squeal coming from my brakes was when they got wet. Of course keep in mind a fully metallic pad will eat up the rotor faster so your suggestion to go with a ceramic and metallic combo would most likely be better. Pads are cheaper than rotors. Maybe full ceramic for better stopping power. You would have to weigh out your options there.

no no no no no never touch pad with your fingers. you will put some oil from your fingers always use gloves when working on pads or disk rotors. very important. other then that great work man.

Yup heard it slightly. The rotor was slightly bent on one side so it hit the pads. Adjusting the caliper would not fix the slight rub.

I wouldn't recommend it. There may be adverse side effects to spraying wd40 which is a lubricant. I would use automotive brake clean instead on rotors. Anything else may contaminate the rotor and brake pad surface deeming them unusable.

Dont do what was done here of holding in one piston while pushinf out the other. The pistons are held in purely by tight tollerance mechanical fit alone. You can easily pop one out and loose hydraulic brake pressure.

I partially agree with what you are saying but there are times when you have a stuck piston and you need to hold the one that is moving down to force the fluid to the side that is sticking to free it. Dirt and crud can get caked on the piston, if not cleaned off regularly, it'll seize a piston. And yes, a piston can pop out and you lose hydraulic pressure, but you would have to be pumping it more than a few times to get the piston out far enough.

@@theericmclaren Nah don't feel bad! It's probably why the brakes squeal a little bit for the rear. I usually wear latex gloves but this time I didn't lol. Won't make that mistake again!
