Thanks for the video with good ideas on removing my broken shutter spikes similar to yours. Here’s the question aren’t you just setting yourself up for repeat of this problem after another good storm or wind? I think it would make a lot more sense to replace the shutter spikes with some sort of deck screw or corrosion resistant aggressive screw.
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy 4 года назад
Thanks for the great comment. The screw idea is a good idea. However I already had holes in the house. It would have been a lot more trouble to replace them that way. I replaced them with a better quality spike. They have been in for over a year. We have had a few high wind storms since I replaced them. I have not had any issues. You can can find them in my Amazon store front. Here is a link to the store. My store www.amazon.com/shop/survivalonabudgetmadeeasy Thanks again for the question. You may enjoy my diy playlist. Thanks for this video! I have a shutter that was installed in the wrong position. It's too low. Really annoying. Would I have to drill new holes to reposition it? Would I have to seal the other holes? Or is there a trick to repositioning that I'm unaware of?
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy 3 года назад
I would silicone the old holes shut. Position your shutter where you want it. I would start with the hole from the top nearest to the window. Drill a hole put a spike in it. If you are happy with it drill hole in second upper hole put a spike in it. From there work your way down. Hope this helps.

After you cut the heads off the old spikes and then push the remnants in with the awl, where do the pieces that you are pushing in go? Does it go through the sheathing and into the void where the insulation is? I'm trying to visualize how you are able to push the old pieces in while leaving space for the new spikes. What length awl do I need? Will a 3" awl work?
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy 2 года назад
The original spike is through the sheathing and in the wall. When you push it threw. It goes past the exterior wall and stays there. Yes a 3 inch awl should be long enough.

So, dumb question, but are the spikes intended to *only* grip in the vinyl siding, or the sheating/foam behind also?

@jchmcnet

When you use these spike and mount shutters is it the vinyl siding holding the shutter and not something underneath the siding? I have RMAX foam behind my siding and nothing can attach to this foam and it is about inches thick. No plywood behind the siding. Is the siding alone enough to hold the shutters? Thanks
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy 4 года назад
This is my opinion and my opinion alone. I have built house's with RMAX foam behind the siding and No plywood behind the siding in my opinion I would NOT put shutters on. I do not feel it would hold up. To be honest I don't recall any house's built that way with shutters. Hope this helps.
@jchmcnet
@jchmcnet 4 года назад
@@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy thanks. My old shutter use screws that only grab the siding. Has worked for over 20 years. Never saw these spikes before but could not tell if the spike only grips the siding or does it grab something behind the siding as well.
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy 4 года назад
I would guess just the siding. I am only guessing. Have to be honest I am surprised it lasted 20 years. If you are going to replace screws I would make sure they are the same length if not actually the same screws. Sorry I am not more of a help.

You did not show the part where you had to drill out a stuck spike, bc your drill was re-charging. I do not understand how you do that part -- you use a bit smaller than the hole, but then what? Do you power through the spike and crush it into dust? Does the drill somehow help pull out old spike? I don't understand the principle. Could you please show that part? Some of your subscribers are female, LOL.
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy
@SurvivalonaBudgetMadeEasy 2 года назад
It just depends on the wall. For example brick it will curl around the drill bit. OSB it will more then likely fall into wall. Use a bit smaller then the spike. Sorry for the delay in a response I have been sick the last couple days.

Sorry just seen your response. If you can go to facebook and send me a picture. Survival on a Budget Made Easy is also a facebook page. I think I know the solution but not sure. If the spikes are to small for the hole you have a couple options. One you can go to a home improvement store and get shutter "screws" bigger then the holes and paint the heads. If they do not have shutter screws find stainless steel screws that will fit and paint the heads. If they do not have screws that will work you will have to get plastic wall anchors the use the screws. Some people fill the holes with a piece of wood like ceder because it will not rot. I just don not see the wood as the best option.
