I like to install the new drier external to the unit. That way if the evaporator ever needs repaired or replaced I can just pump the unit down. Make repairs and install a new drier. I hate when manufactures factory install the driers.

They hear the horror stories of techs mistaking the compressor muffler for a drier and dont install one, and when they get called back, they install the wrong type.

Advice: 1.) Cut the compressor copper lines closer to the compressor and you won't have to add a piece to make it fit. 2.) Wet rag service port when brazing anywhere near it. 3.) Always add liquid refrigerant into liquid line so not to get liquid into the compressor during start up. Thanks again.

I dont know why a lot of techs use rose bud tips on small diameter piping or the biggest sized tip in the torch kit. When you heat that small diameter piping with those those tips, you over heat the joints and use up to much gas. Always leving burn Mark's all over liquid dryers. Those tips are made for bigger diameter pipes above 7/8's. Also being it's a heat pump I would've put something wet in that reversing valve. Always weigh the charge your pulling out as well to see what was in the system in case you may be lower than factory or more due to length of line set. Charge by subcool unless you have a receiver. Those amanas and Goodman's have a subcool of 6-10 and a plus or minus 3 degrees.

I would say good diagnostic and change out. I would have used wet rags or that stuff that keeps things cool on the txv and the valves, but you did a good job. I dont remember the original video, but from my experience if the compressor runs and doesnt pump it pulls low amps. never seen that caused by a reversing valve. I have seen pressures almost equalized by a reversing valve leaking by the valve. My go to if i thought it was the reversing valve or compressor, was to pump it down and see if it would pump down. if it did it was the reversing valve, if not it was the compressor.

If you have a mechanical failure on a compressor, I would think real hard about replacing the whole out door unit, at least on a heat pump. There's no guarantee that any metal pieces are not going to end up fouling the reversing valve, or the out door mettering device.

You're driver slipped out while brazing. This will almost certainly crack from time and vibration. Also learn to use your heat to draw solder in instead of doing it without nitro . All joints should be in place before attaching nitro. Then braze upside down if you have to. I think you do good overall better than most .

No offense but he recorded himself cutting corners and uploaded it to RU-vid. It's really fair game when someone calls him out for cutting corners like not flowing nitrogen or unbrazing the drier. Ok, I hate to be the downer here but after 45 years as a service tech and instructor I need to say a few things. First of all you should never unsweat a filter drier from the system...any moisture or debri trapped can be forced back into the system. There are videos showing this. Second, you said you are purging with nitrogen but when you braze the fittings onto the new drier you did not and carbon will form inside the copper and end up in the drier. Also, you are using too much oxy in your torch and makes the flame too hot, cut the pressure back and have a softer flame that will braze easier. NOT trying to be critical, just trying to inform and hope others can learn too.
