A video showing how a replaced the motor control board on the Sherline lathe.
I bought the lathe cheaply because it had previously been hooked up as a CNC machine and motor controller had been ripped out in the conversion.
I wanted to convert it back to original, manual control.
The motor speed controller is available from Sherline. However spares are not easy to source in Europe and prices are inflated. Ordering from the USA would have been incredibly expensive with shipping, import duties and handling charges.
I had to find another way....

I was running mine and heard to distinctive pops and maybe a few sparks. I bypassed the speed control and ran direct to motor and it runs super high RPM, what should I consider looking at for the cause of the failure? To repair my old speed controller? It did no longer work with speed controller wires in circuit

Hello. Do not run the motor without the speed control! The motor is DC and your home power feed will be AC. It will damage your motor beyond repair and it could be dangerous! 😬 It's hard to know what caused your controller to fail without taking a look but the first things to check for are loose wires and blown fuses. If you don't find any problems next look for burnt or melted components. Some components can be changed easily for little cost. Matt.

Hello, I have a CNC Sherline mill and it was purchased in the last 18 months to 2 years. My board is slightly different to yours and since I Changing to the Centroid Acorn controller the motor control is a problem. I am happy to run the motor first then set it to CNC. I have more wires than you show but I have three wires that were for the motor control. I’m wondering if I simply replace them using the Pot as you have done OR will it blow up? I can send you a photo of the board if it will help? Thanks in anticipation. Mike

Hello. I know practically nothing about CNC I'm afraid but if you wish to send me a photo I'll take a look and help if I can. 🙂
