Replacing the differential and rear axle of the 2009 Lincoln Town Car

We are back working on the Lincoln again. A few weeks ago, are omni present rumble from the back turned into a grinding loud rumble and smelled like something was burning. After getting a repair estimate that cost almost as much as the car, and after much consideration, I decided, with a few friends, to go ahead and replace it ourselves. This is a rather long video at about an hour and 20 minutes, but we left all the details we could to hopefully help any of you out there doing the same job.
We actually had a good time doing the job and there is some good humor and funny banter if you listen carefully.

Heres what causes this. From the factory to save on cost they only put in enough oil to allow to let the ring gear (tall gear) to throw oil in the third member area. Then people as in the owners never never ever top them off with the 2.5 quarts they need in order for the axle tubes to fill halfway with oil. The outer tube roller bearings and axles shaft ends then run dry, then after the vehicle is sometimes only 8 years old or has 100k miles its metal against metal. That design of the C lock differential for normal driving, normally other wise would last 50 years if people would top them off with oil directly after they bought a car brand new. Most of the 8.8 like that lincoln has hold 2.5 quarts, but the sloppy factory only puts in maybe one quart to save on cost.

Interesting! I bought this Lincoln second hand and it always had a bit of a roar in the back end. The first time I checked the differential oil, it was not only low, but was milky, like water had got into it. I changed it out at that time and it lasted another 3 years until the whole thing just blew. The "new" rear end is butter smooth and the car corners and drives like a Lincoln should. :)

@@leagueestates That water that got in it was because it was driven through some high water at one point and the water came in through the breather they have.

How many miles you had on the original one? Is this new one ok?

About 89k on the original. The replacement had around 120k, but it is so much better!

Hey, I have to swap differentials in mine but there is a like a star head socket I need? Could you tell me what size the socket is

I don't remember having to use any star heads on this job. Do you have one on yours?

@@leagueestates my dad was doing the swap for me and he said it had a star head bolt to remove the driveshaft from the differential. Mine is an 01 so maybe it’s a little different?

@@DeionDeion-ox1zf you need a 12 mm 12 point wrench or socket for those bolts.

@@tconside hey, I appreciate that we eventually figured it out and got it swapped out. Also during that transition we found out 98-02 will not work with 03-11 differentials lol.
