In this video, I replace the door latch mechanism on a 2004 (1st Gen) Toyota Sequoia. I also replace the door lock actuator. I was having problems shutting the drivers side door. My passenger door also was not locking properly.
Wanted to give an update. I did this last week and I really don't think it would have been possible without your video. It helped me so much that it probably saved me from breaking a bunch of stuff up. The hardest part was pushing the door handle rod out which after I went back to re-watch your video it was so simple. This video actually built up my confidence level a notch or two and I'm not just saying that, incredible! I can't thank you enough for posting this video. God bless you my friend and thanks one more time!
this is the best explained video of removing and replacing the latch and the lock actuator for the 1st gent sequoia hand down. i've watched some other but they also skip the detail and just showed the finish product. this clip explained everything i need to know, thank u!
Thank you Soo much for this. I just replaced the whole latch mechanism and actuator because it was all that O'Reilly's had available on my 2005 Tundra SR5 and this helped Soo much. I will say that the new part came with the actuator wired backwards and the door lock was operating backwards from the other 3 doors. I had to take it all back out and swap the old actuator into the new mechanism. But after that, everything is perfect!
Thanks for the very well done video! This defect just occurred on my 2005 tundra double cab with 130k miles. The part numbers you shown were very helpful as my local Toyota dealership showed only a full assembly for nearly $400 each! Also your tip for removing the door latch rod with a needle nose pliers was awesome as this was the only hold up on the repair, I didn’t need to remove the exterior door handle to remove rods. The first door took about an hour, second door took less then 30 minutes.. thanks again for the very helpful video!
Great video, thanks so much for sharing. I just replaced the latch on my 03 Sequoia drivers door, following this video step-by-step. Fantastic tutorial. Got the part on sale from local Toyota for ~$140. The only note I’ll add is that I spent over 20 minutes trying to shove the new latch and mechanism *behind* the window railing until I realized that’s not how I took it out. It obviously wouldn’t fit and I struggled until finally I slid it under and around the *front* of the railing (as I had taken it out; I just had forgotten after messing with mechanism for about 10mins). Took about 2 hours total, while watching this video several times and pausing, replaying, etc. If I did it again it would be maybe half that time given experience. Lastly, my old broken latch looks so different from the new latch; the white plastic parts are almost completely all broken and missing from where the latch hits the metal d-ring/loop on the door frame. Point being it’s really easy to tell why I was having a hard time closing the door; had to SLAM it several times for it to latch properly. Auto locking was fine so I only replaced the latch and kept the same actuator. Highly recommend doing this yourself. Again, great video and thanks.
Thanks a bunch for the comment. What’s really funny is that the same thing you explained kind of happened to me too. I’ve gotten into my door numerous times and never really had a problem but the one I was filming, I ran into an issue where it was getting caught up and I was getting so frustrated trying to get it to go back in place. Lucky for me I’m able to just simply remove that part from my video. Lol. Glad you got it done.
Great video Everyman! I just replaced my 2004 tundra latch mechanism and this solved my failure to close without slamming the door. Closes like new now, very gently latches. When I got stuck your video got me over the humps. Took about an hour to get it done and that was taking my time. Very much appreciated sir.
I watched your video previously while waiting for the latch for driver’s door on my 04 Tundra Dbl Cab to come in. Got the part and got it done today and it went without a hitch. Thanks to your video, it made it feel like I’ve done it before. Many thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make the video. My tundra door isn't closing well and just ordered the parts to finally fix it. No doubt watching this video carefully will save me a lot of trouble.
Thank you for the very informative and detailed video on this task. You did a great job explaining every detail to be easily understood. I now have the confidence to do this to my 01 Sequoia.
Thank you for your time and knowledge , i have a 2003 tundra that passenger side latch needs to be fixed and know this video will help out alot. It will close but door is not close right ,door is loose and still looks open. Thanks again and may God bless you.
Excellent video. Thanks. It saved me a lot of time and helped me get it done efficiently. Well done technically too - good audio, lighting, and shot angles.
Awesome video !! My 2006 tundra driver door stared to not shut all the way . Now the locking latch drops down and the door just bounce open . This video will help a lot for my repair . Very Clean install also Sir , Cheers from Vegas
@@EverymanGear Hey I just google the P# and ebay got some hits also amazon , But amazon says will not fit my TRK . Ill call my local DLR Thanks again!!
Fantastic detail and step-by-step review. Thanks for taking the time to help us out. This darn thing seems to break on many of these- maybe because they stay around for so long. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video! My husband changed the latch on our 2001 sequoia. it would not close properly and drained my battery due to door open light staying on. Your video was very helpful!
Your video was a life and huge money saver. Just performed this job on a 2002 Tundra. Everything went perfect. Dealership would have charged me over $1000. Thank you very much!
Awesome detailed video on pulling this apart and putting it back together. I found on my Tundra that I was having the same problem with the interior lock... not locking all the way after pressing the alarm fob. I found that when removing the two cables from the actual interior hand latch,... you can reattach them a little closer or further apart. I wish I could attach a picture to better explain,... but where they attach,.. they almost look threaded, but they're actually ridged so that you can pop out the cable and reattach them a little closer or further from the door lock. This allows more or less cable travel and allowed my lock to lock all the way when hitting the fob.
Cool video, quick question. My issue is that my driver door activates the interior light when I lean my leg against it while driving. Do I need to do all of this just for that? Locks and opens fine
Great video. I think I’ll just keep pulling up the latch before I shut the door! Damn this is crazy of how much is involved in a simple door latch! I’ll most likely do it nonetheless!
You are a great instructor and filmer too. My wife's Tundra has had this problem for a year... now thanks to your awesome video I will fix it. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Great music at beginning:) Yep... I had to fix a squeaky nut on the window rail assembly and a loose speaker. However I didn't mess with the power window and lock attachment when taking off the door. Just got everything released and then reached around to remove. 2006 Double cab Tundra. Broke several trim clips and plastic covers so had to order more. By the way, I take pictures of every screw cause I always forget which one goes where.
Thank you for the video! Do you know by any chance, if the lock is the same part, if I have 06 tundra with just manual door ( roll up window, no electric lock). Thank you in advance.
Will just replacing the actuator solve the door slamming back open when trying to close it? My driver side door bounces back open occasionally when closing and feels like the plastic will eventually break. Thanks!
I looked online for the part. It’s OEM Toyota on the lock mechanism and the actuator was from Napa. The lock mechanism was like $150 and the actuator was I think around $100-120
@@EverymanGear Thank you for the info and looks like you did a great job on the repair. Your video will definitely help me with my repair job this week. Thank you for posting this awesome video!
I have an early Sequoia and the inner door handle suddenly stopped working. I can roll the window down and open the door from the outside handle. Any thoughts on what might have happened? I will follow your video soon to see if I can fix it.
My guess is that the plastic pull handle mechanism broke. If that’s all it is, you’ll be lucky because that’s the cheapest fix and all you’ll have to do is pull the panel off and replace it. Watch the video below at around 6:06 to see what I’m talking about. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gnEQ_MzKdK0.html
Do you have to change the Actuator as well? The only problem I have is the latch, otherwise it looks good but bounces back and does not closes all the way. Thanks!
Thanks for your reply. Which task would be easier, door latch or rear door handle on a Sequoia? Another important question here: does one need to remove the door handle?
Is this the fix for having to slam the front doors shut?? My passenger door latch has to be manually reset as of yesterday hence looking this up but both doors have to be slammed.
It seems to be a common problem on Toyota's. Mine started acting up now it won't release st all. I have a 2002 Tundra SR5 Access cab and it's gonna cost to have it repaired. This should be a dealer recall to have them replaced.
@@EverymanGear I was able to find those screws. But I have another question. I put the assembly together, but the front door will not latch 100% no matter how hard I close it. What should I do?
I just sprayed my tailgate actuator with brake cleaner and cleaned up the latch component’s as best as I can then sprayed white lithium grease on it. It now works better than when I bought the car. I suspect my sticky tailgate actuator is what caused my handle to break. Real pain in the ass on all the research I did to come to that conclusion. But now my tailgate opens effortlessly.
I am having the same issue with my 05 Tundra Access Cab. How did you determine it was the actuator or the mechanism itself? Trying to save money and by something I don’t need
It’s the mechanism, if the door is shutting, but then bouncing back and not quite latching. What I was also having a problem with is when I was hitting the unlock button on the remote, it was not quite unblocking the door enough to open. That’s when you would make sure you actually change the actuator too.
@@wildwoodwood9153 My drivers door is closed and will not open either from the inside handle or outside handle. I can unlock and lock it manually or the remote but the handles do nothing to open the door
Look at my other video on my channel (about the rear door latch) . I had the same problem. I explain a little more there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gnEQ_MzKdK0.htmlsi=YokoEHT1LhWIbXCC
my driver side door on 2001 toyota sequoia driver side wont close all the way. When i press lock it locks and then opens back up. Do u think its the actuator or the latch assembly. ty
That’s a tough one… Unfortunately, I think you’re probably just going to have to pick one of them and try it. If it were me, I would try to change the latch assembly first.
You could also type in that exact symptom into Google and see if there’s anybody in forums that have had the same problem. I wish I could remember enough to tell you whether or not my door still locked even though I had the door latch problem. Now that I think about it… I’m sure it probably did but I would just have to slam it shut.
I think there are videos out there about how to work on the back door but I can say this. I have addressed the back latch mechanism on my Sequoia about three times. Always use original Toyota parts. It might seem appealing to buy metal aftermarket latching mechanism but they never last. I have gone through multiples. In the end, I got so tired of having to take apart the entire door mechanism, especially when you have to crawl inside and do all of that because it won’t open… That I finally took it to a shop and had them repair it properly with a new latch mechanism, cable and pull handle. It became a really annoying and old repair after doing it multiple times.
Thanks for this video. Looks like I need to remove the entire latch to replace the door handle cable. I may be able to replace it with out pulling it all the way out. Doesn’t look too difficult but it is a little intimidating for a first timer. Local shop wanted $250!. I bought the cable for $40 and gonna try myself. Any tips?
I think the biggest thing is to just take your time. Other than car stereo and speaker installs… I really have no experience inside the door and I was able to do it so take photos if you need to and just refer back to the video. Good luck.
@@EverymanGear such a satisfying feeling to fix this myself. Thanks to your video, I was able to get the job done pretty much hassle free. Thanks again!
Could i get the part number for the door latch piece. I just took out my old and realized the new one ksnt the one i needed. And im looking o think i found it. But want to make sure? Anything helps, single momma!
@@a_aronhdtech1328 I’ve never had any problem with peeling. Keep in mind, I mostly use car washes that do not have spinning brushes because of my roof rack and also my ditch lights. The key is doing lots of coats. You can find a video here on RU-vid. I don’t recall the one I watched, because it’s been years but it was a guy who was doing the emblems on his Toyota Tacoma truck. Good luck
Also, I bought the FRONT PASSENGER side, so make sure you clarify which side and front or back...I’m sure the other doors are similar but a number or two different
Convinces me why the mechanic is going to charge whatever they are going to charge. 😅 But there is no excuse for the dealer charging $50 to replace a cabin air filter on my Prius that took me five minutes.
Sorry to hear that! I had a rear door that was stuck shut. Check out this video. I explain how I get in. Good luck. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gnEQ_MzKdK0.html
