For those embarking on this project. Buy an oil vacuum pump with the small 1/4" tube. you stick the tub down the trans filler tube and the other end into a drain pan or large jug and suck the atf out of the pan. It make for a WAY cleaner job. Also makes "draining" the pan and topping off to change atf very easy. I run a cheap $30 unit.

For those whom don’t know, the 545rfe & 45rfe is the exact same transmission…the difference is the TCU/TCM under the hood…if you have a 45rfe TCU/TCM you can swap it out with any jeep or dodge 545rfe TCM/TCU and your 4 speed is now a 5 speed. No updates or reprogramming necessary it is a simple plug and play. Why do this? Well, for better gas mileage of course…you should see a 300-500 rpm drop at 55-70mph…what I mean is, you’ll have lower rpm’s no matter what speed…but if you pay attention to your rpm values at 55 or 70 mph before the swap, check them after and you’ll see the difference. This is for 2001 & up ONLY…if you have a 2000 and down you’ll have issues with your ECU/ECM…it can still be done to the 2000 but, you’ll have to take it to a dealership or anyone whom can reprogram the ECM/ECU to handle the upgrade. If you don’t feel like swapping out the TCM/TCU you can take your vehicle to a dealership and they’ll upgrade the software from the 45rfe to the 545rfe…costs around $90-$100 but a used TCM/TCU from the salvage yard…$30-$50…I think $30-$50 dollars is well worth the money for a 4-5 miles per gallon increase. This in regards to the 4.7l v8…not sure about the 3.7l v6…but I’d surmise it’d be the same…maybe even a bit better. ;-) As for the 5.7l v8 with the 545rfe trans & TCU/TCM…those can be upgraded from a 5 to a 6 speed with a software upgrade… SIDE NOTE: Some highly unknown information about the 545 & 45rfe transmissions…Apparently these are capable of 8 speed forward gears and 3 speed in reverse…yes, you read that correctly…that’s with what is your transmission right now…we just don’t have the ability because no one’s typed of a software program for an upgrade with which to do it…anybody up for the challenge?!?!?! There are only two bolts and a nut holding the TCM/TCU in place unless you’re counting the harness. This is very easy to get to, open your hood and it sets on the left side bank/passenger side, right on top…little silver or corroded aluminum depending on the shape it’s in.

Following exactly what you did there but have to wait to install tomorrow night after work don’t have a small torque wrench just a big half inch drive lowest it goes is 10 foot pounds. When you were doing the torque on the Solenoid you said put the bolts back in at 50 lbs. I had a blond moment and went to tighten mine down at 50 lbs.!thank GOD the bit broke and not the bolt. Then on further research I found out it’s 50 inch lbs. the bolts are small I should of clued in to that. Like I said glad the bolt didn’t break. Regardless great video keep going make some more. How do I know is the shifter solenoid bad when I have no codes on my 2008 5.7 ? Is not moving when get hot

FYI. A 10$ fluid pump down the dipstick tube pulls out most of the fluid in the pan. No mess.... Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this video, so many other videos don't show you the important tips. I have a bunch of those heavy plastic concrete bins, try that next time to catch the fluid. Messy job when you don't have a drain plug.

I had the same problem on 2007 grand cherokee overland, I did the same proseger it fix the problem but I don't know if I was running low on my trans fluid to star with I ended using 9qt of fluid to get it back to level

I have a question in needing of an answer. I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500, 4wd. I did both of the trans filters, and put in multi purpose fluid, second gear doesn’t wanna cooperate that much, could I have messed up a shift solenoid putting the filter on, I was doing a bit of bumping to seat that seal on the neck of the filter. TIA

i just took my valve bodyoff and part of the gasket stay on the trans holes. would that matter?

Hey Dylan I’m work on this 2011 Ram 3500. It doesn’t want to go reverse. And a code popped up. It’s PO736. Meaning Reverse incorrect ratio. Any ideas? As of now I’m planning to change fluid along with filters. Side note, all gears going forward shift and work perfectly fine

how did you get the clip off i get the red tags down? are there more than one red clip that you slide with a screw driver?

I'm about to replace the shift solenoid on my '08 as well, and I've noticed a lot of comments in this video asking if their issue could be this. Even though it's still money out of your pocket, it's a good idea to have a pro mechanic do a diagnostic before you try this repair. It could be a bad wire harness instead of the solenoid, and then you just spent a lot of money for nothing

Mines shifts 1 st gear rough like it don’t want to pick up speed but on highway it runs fine it’s marks on my scanner an overdrive problem you think it’s involved with the shift selonoid

Did you have to reset the tcm? I replaced my shift solenoid twice and it isn't shifting correctly anymore..

Ive heard if you leave the harness connected it will hold the valve body in place and you can pull it down then disconnect it afterwards. I'm gonna try it that way.

So you say it was getting stuck in 4th gear, meaning it wasn't going into overdrive? I think I might have the same problem you had. I've parked my truck for now until I can figure out what's going on. Replaced all kinds of sensors, code keeps coming up p0700, po871 transmission shift solenoid code. It started after I done some engine work mysteriously. If I do a reset where you take the battery cables off and do the whole deal with the key and the accelerator to the floor it shifts great the next two times I drive it then it goes back to missing overdrive, can't take it on the highway because of 50 miles an hour it will be 2500 rpm and I don't want to drive it like that. Everything is pointing to the shift solenoid but I'm still looking for answers before I buy one. Hopefully you'll respond to this and tell me if that's the same problem you were having.

Good video buddy but you should always insert the filter fitting into the trans and then install the filter.

Hey Dylan I have a 06 ram 4.7 when I I try to accelerate up the hill my truck seem to accelerate then accelerate back down and accelerate again and then accelerate down when whole time in steady on the gas pedal do you think it can be the part you replace for your transmission that I need ? My transmission shift okay and stuf its just that acceleration like if its towing something heavy when its not??

Dylan, I just replaced mine tonight. Now the shifter lever isn't engaging any gear it feels like. It was in the 1 (low) gear. My 2 questions are do I have to position the solenoid to neutral or park before I install it and could me not having any trans fluid cause the dead shifter lever to happen?

That main filter gasket is a nightmare. I couldn't get the new gasket in without deforming it. There has to be a special tool for installing it. Something with a dowel in the middle to keep the inside from deforming while pushing it into the hole.

Mine was fine parked it Saturday started it Monday put it in reverse backed up went to drive and was acting like it was slipping but it was in thecwrong gear pulled it down to first seemed fine went back to drive and again reved high and was in wring gear. Stepped on it and had no passing gear either. Po700 code abs/parking brake light on to. Fluid was fine and bright red you think this is my problem?

I know you posted this a while ago. But what symptoms/ error codes did you see whento determine the shift solenoid was the culprit. I am about to buy a truck that does not shift. I want to be sure I am not getting into a money dump.

Can I drive my truck till I get it fixed in a week or so or is it best to leave it parked till I get it fixed? (since it is shifting a bit hard and not smooth and also it goes into limp mode in manual 4th gear.)

I just replaced me solenoid and when I went to crank it it would not start and the shift indicator says it's in Reverse. When it's in Park.

Could this be done without removing the wire harness? What would be the difference in leaving the harness in and just plugin the solenoid in as you put it together? Just wondering.

As I watch this video and realize im having the same problem. driving my2002n Ram 1500 truck on long drive it stucks in gear and i have to pull to the side of the road and cut the truck off which gives it a reset . I really want this to be fixed so im going to change the solenoid

With a bad solenoid, would the truck not be able to shift to drive or reverse? Have this issue with the same truck as you. Fluids look good and there seems to be no there issues that I know of to cause this. Truck runs fine. Just can't get it to move.

working on mine now i just put up on front ramps to work on will roll off when done but let me drain pan gradually and not get oil all over 2 pieces of cardboard and an old towel caught the rest off the shop floor

It’s much better to do maintenance yourself but getting dirty sucks. Some people take their vehicles to shops to get work done to them mainly because they do not want to get dirty. Pretty sad huh. Yep there’s people like that... annnnd they are capable of working on their vehicles. Now that’s just dumb. It’s only a one time thing for a long while. Get all it’s maintenance done and drive it until it needs it again! I get everything it needs done quickly. My truck is currently all serviced up! Everything has got fresh fluid in it and some are topped off!

Doing this tomorrow on my 07 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 hemi. Goes from Drive to 4th gear Manuel and dosent come out no matter if I try to down or up shift or put into Neutral bac into Drive it stays in 4th. Hoping the new solenoid fixes the problem.

My 03 Ram shifts perfectly fine. The truck goes into limp mode every few minutes while driving. I've replaced everything except the shift solenoid. The dealer said $415 for just the shift solenoid (part not labor). I guess I'll give it a try.

My dodge is doing the same thing works fine for the first 5min of driving then suddenly starts acting up downshifts on highway and no power or torque at stops but once I turn the truck off and back on no more issues lol
