Back again. Had the same thing happen to my center channel (9.cm). Fixed the same way with that same kit and works like new. I actually re-used the outer part of the surround after cleaning it up, more flush with the metal frame. Used a bowl again to keep the outer surround down to allow the glue to adhere better to the frame. It sounds great once again, after the surrounds ripped mid-lows were lacking presence since it's a sealed box.
The discussion about removing the inner part of the rubber surround. I have removed the surround from the 9.1 woofer and it is very simple. Just with your nail lift it a bit. Then you can easily pull it off
I found leaving that in place made it much easier to center the driver as I could use it as a guide. I used that method for my 9.cm as well and all worked well.
thanks for the video. I started this process on my Diamond 9.1, after removing all the allen screws I could not unplug the spade connector, tried gently pulling it out but wont come off. Scared to use too much force as it might break the pin on the driver. Any special technique to be used to remove the spade connector ? Your video didnt show that step...
Hi, indeed a valid concern, and one I also encountered when dissasembling my 11.4s the other day. If there is enough space, you can try to gently pry open the female part with a small screwdriver, and just bend it close with pliers when reassembling for a secure fit. A more drastic approach, and one which I followed with one of my 11.4 tweeters, is to just cut off the wire to the offending terminal, and solder it back together when reassembling.
hi my surrounds are just coming unglued a little in a couple spots can i just glue them back dow or will that mess up the way it sounds somehow? still sound fine to my ear, but i dont want it to get worse! thanks :)
For the short term I'd say just glue them at the spots they're coming unglued, making sure the surrounds seal airtight. For the longer term, my worry would be that the glue is deteriorating, and the rest of the surrounds will also become unstuck in time. If you feel up to it, maybe test the remaining glue to see how strong the bond still is. If it becomes unglued when you gently pry at the surrounds, perhaps reglueing the entire surround will give you the best long term results.

I just replaced the rubber surrounds on a Wharfdale 9.5 mid and the bass from the other speaker of the pair, both drivers marked 2007, presumably the year, although I don't know how long they had been torn. It took me a while to find the right size rubber surrounds in Europe (ebay in the end). I was not sure they would fit well, but they actually fit better because the rubber surrounds that Wharfedale used had the flat outer part extending quite a bit into the gap (I think this may be why they fail at the rubber hump outer edge - the angled edge is not supposed to flex). The replacements' inner flat part also don't extend as far into the cone, they also join at the edge of the cone too. Seems much better! I found it quite easy to take a scalpel blade pointed upwards and out towards the outside to very carefully and slowly cut a line up and away from the speaker cone. Then it was quite easy to pull the rubber up and slowly peel it off the cone to ensure you the glue comes with it all. Makes sense to cut the bulge all the way around first. splitting the outer ring and then pulling up is the same, although some glue will not come off as easily. I used upturned bowls and thin cardboard circles with small rubber dumbell weights (500g) to help them stay in position while the glue set. I'm not 100% sure it's aligned perfectly but the mid seems good after a 50Hz test and putting the left speaker back together. The bass was more difficult, I could not get the spade connector free and the terminal was also loose as the screw literally fell out (Friday afternoon British workmanship?), this resulted in the tinsel wires ripping away from the back of the cone (I was being careful!). The wires are still connected, but I really don't know what to re-attach the tinsel wires to the back of the cone with. Some sort of thick epoxy or glue, sort of looks like a deep line of wax (except hard) holding the top part of each wire away from the cone surface. Does anyone know what to use? I may go with Sugru, which should stick and harden to be like a silicone rubber, which may have anti-vibration properties for the tinsel wires? Or is rubber going to wobble and resonate, should I use something that sets hard, if so, what?

In answer to your question about a suitable glue to fix the errant tinsel wires to the cone, I'd suggest ordinary contact glue, which I've found dries to a tough yet flexible substance in cases like this.
I had the same issue. It worked well for me, although I had a hard time getting the outer portion to stick well. I found a bowl the same size that slipped right in the lip and I was able to get it to stick. I did notice it affected the sound a bit, maybe slightly more boomy, but nothing too dramatic. I did see a few other videos of someone also removing the inner part of the surround, but I didn't think it would be worth the extra effort. I figured worst case I could just order some woofers straight from wharfedale as one of my tweeters did go out a while back and the replacement works fine. I had done previously a quick repair when the surrounds started coming apart on one speaker with some rubber cement and it did last over two years, but eventually the other lower speaker did the same thing so I did another quick repair and ordered the same surrounds you used. Luckily the top woofers are fine on mine. I also have a pair of 9.2's which haven't had any issues yet. Thanks for the informative video!

i found second hand 9.2 in good condition. i read the reviews and almost everybody happy with these speakes. than i saw this video. i confused. is there any exeption for 9.2 or build date because some 9.2 speakers still in good shape. i wonder if wharfedale solve this problem after some time and some of their product is revised or not. and what is your advice ? should i buy?
I'd say go ahead and buy. Even if the surrounds do perish after a while, it is not hard to replace the surrounds yourself, or get a repair shop to do it for you. Remember that many speaker surrounds, especially if made of foam, have a limited life span en will require replacing at some time, and even a few times over the lifetime of the speakers. Just something audio lovers have to live with.
On the 10 series and above they did add reinforcement to the surrounds. So far my 10.1's haven't had any issues, my 9.2's are yet to fail but my 9.5's and 9.cm both failed in the same way. Also have some 7.2 anniversary's and they haven't had any issue even though they are older. I have 3 pairs of 9.sr's for surround sound and none have failed yet.
Where did you get the replacement surrounds from? I got them from ebay, but they were too big, so I had to trim the outer 'flat' part of the surround off. Second problem was that I had to had to put the speaker upside down on a flat surface or else the cone wouldn't stick to the new surround.. I'll see tomorrow if it worked out.
Netherlands031, hi. I used the RSK-6.5 repair kit from Simply Speakers in the USA (www.SimplySpeakers.com). I think they're also available on Ebay and Amazon. They fitted absolutely perfectly. Regarding the stickiness of the glue: I used the glue supplied with the repair kit, and found you have to use it quite sparingly to get a sticky consistency. I first tested it on some of the old rubber pieces I removed from the speaker frame, but I still used too much on the first cone, making a bit of a mess. With the remaining three I knew better.

Your speaker uses a 5" (125mm) woofer. Be sure though to measure the dimensions of the surround exactly and compare it to that of the replacement surround. A vendor like Simplyspeakers shows the exact measurements of their replacement surrounds, making comparison easy.
The stiffness and weight of the new surrounds obviously also differs from the originals and can influence the sound. It's a chance you take, but still better than just throwing the speakers away. In my case they still sound fantastic. I've also had the surrounds of a pair of AR speakers repaired more than a decade ago, and they also still sound as good as new.

Very bad speaker company! There are none other speaker repair of other companies tutorial, just wharfedale product's! I also had diamond 9.3 9cm 9.1 After 2 years they all look like yours!
Yes, it is disappointing that the surrounds perished so soon. There definitely was a problem with the 9 series. However, my experience is that sponge type surrounds do not last more than 10 years anyway. I also have a pair of AR speakers of 1987 vintage, and their sponge surrounds went after about ten years. I had the surrounds replaced with rubber ones, and they're still going strong, and still sounds very good.
