USNS Rainier (T-AOE-7) is a Supply-class fast combat support ship named after Mount Rainier in Washington state. The USNS Rainier was first christened in September 1991, and later commissioned as "USS Rainier (AOE-7)" in January 1995 at Bremerton, Washington.

For those who haven't done this,the carrier sends over the shotline to the oiler so that the aircraft are not damaged when the brass rod that carries the piece of line to start the haulover process comes flying across the gap between ships.

This is way cool, I always thought ships got supplies from port only, but turns out that they send a supply ship with ziplines

Yep,it takes all day,then you have to go back on watch without a shower,stand that,& then re-man underway replenishment stations because the oiler's pumps had broken down before you'd gotten a full tank of fuel,so that takes what would have been your sleep period,& then you have to go back on watch again....

I miss doing that. I was a BM on the supply when she was brand new in Norfolk. Fast ship. Very fast

I did contracted security work on the USS Rainier in the mid 2000s while it was in drydock here in Portland Oregon at a company called Cascade General... It is an amazingly huge ship! Fun job too.

In 1968-70, I was privileged to have served aboard USS Rainier AE-5. I was a blue-helmeted deck ape and later a QM and in that capacity I steered the ship during unreps. Things certainly di9d change. You might notice Rainier' s motto is "Legend of Service" referring to the old rainier, which was commissioned in 1940 and served thru WW2, Korea and Vietnam.
