If not too messy, use vinegar and water to clean up. Also, I think there is a wax product you can apply to the surface of the pavers to make the mortar stick in the joints only. May not be available except at a masonry supply.

For bigger jobs make the mortar wetter, and use a grout bag. Keeps things clean and wet mortar will bound better to dusty older brick. 🧱🙂

Definitely would've been a good idea to use a cake bag on that but,,, whatever your used to if u have no time restrictions.

Hey Tom I’m a 4th generation mason my great great great grandfather Nona Michaelcame to America as a true Italian stone mason The two you have with the wheels to handle and a nail setting it called a skate and that’s usually used for after a bricklayer strikes up his brickwork he’ll strike all the joints head joints and bad joints with a flat iron and then skate the green cement out to eighth inch quarter inch half inch depth to make the brick project out
@tonytrotta9322
@tonytrotta9322 6 лет назад
Why didn't Tom knock out the loose mortar where the settling was and then pack with new mortar at the 3:00 mark?
@brikkijim
@brikkijim 7 лет назад
First the raker is used for jointing purpose with the head of nail down. For precise jointing like this simply tape the sides of joints and use a heavier mortar. A bonding agent should be used to help with adhesion. I never liked using a slicker and prefer a flat jointer which is more rigid. I also turn jointer sideways into joint to make sure it's completely down and not bridging .

Do not pack that bottom joint with mortar. It will not last. That joint should be caulked with a high quality sealant. Tommy is a great carpenter; in this, he is a carpenter doing masonry work.

that looked like a Portland+lime mortar to repoint a sand+lime joint. I'm just trying to learn this stuff and this confuses me as restoration vids, some at least, say that kind of mixing is bad because the old mortar is self sacrificing while controlling moisture while the newer mortar forces the brick to take the moisture. what did I miss?

Should have used a squeeze bag to put the mortar in then tooled it,that would have been much faster and cleaner.

@vistron888
@vistron888 7 лет назад
Love the show and have learned some good stuff but..... Some people here saying the mortar was too dry? It was too wet, that's why there was too much staining of the brick faces. Muratic acid should only be used as a last resort when a lot of staining has occurred by poor application. Not as part of the normal process. It's nasty stuff. I would have wet the joints first, then applied a dryer mix.

Place your brick in water before hand, keeps it from drying out so quickly.

Why not use a bag, cut the beed with a trowel then joint it? Much faster and cleaner...I think. The method shown looks messier :)

@delamomarcos

+johnny feathers I think know why they didn't use a bag. Maybe It takes too much skill for a regular homeowner?
@Hoserthomas
@Hoserthomas 7 лет назад
Marcos Cortez grout bags can be quicker as far as filling the joints but unfortunately you can run into joints not drying fast enough. Also it's important to compress once the bagging mud has set up otherwise the mortar doesn't bond well. You also have to watch for shrink cracks, the wetter the mud the greater the chance of shrink cracks showing up, much like parging

no mask while grinding? Ever hear of death by silica? Where to brick come to a right angle the joint is always flush not concave. Generally a mess you made. I would have wet the brick prior to pointing and then let the surface dry a bit so mortar doesn't dry immediately. Ever read a Material Safety Date Sheet?
@Ahmed____
@Ahmed____ 8 лет назад
Exactly. Doesn't matter whether it is hot or cold, wetting the brick before pointing is an absolute MUST.
@captainh3831

I'm no mason, but how about simply masking the bricks with some heavy duty tape to keep the mortar off ?

its easy enough with practice and proper technique to make a clean job while repointing; my boss would never allow me to touch the trowel to the brick and push mortar in like this. But injecting the mortar into the joint with a pointing bag can be much easier than working off of the trowel.

Actually that mortar was way too wet. The stairs should've been washed first then allowed to surface dry. Then pack the joints with mortar mixed to the consistency of damp beach sand, essentially "dry packing " . Much stronger, much cleaner.
@jimmyclay3540

no it was actually to dry, it fell off the trowel because it had no moisture. obviously the man doesnt know how to mix.

well that was some awkward looking tuckpointing. if these were my guys they would have been fired on site. but for homeowner info I suppose it's fine. but as another commenter pointed out its far better to be clean while pointing than come back with muriatic acid afterward. sometimes it's necessary (new construction bloom, moisture issues, etc.) but it is some nasty stuff.
